Office experience -- 0/10. The front desk lady who schedules appointments is extremely rude, unhelpful and disrespectful to patients. She was yelling at me and lecturing me -- unbelievable. She charged me $40 for a "missed" appointment which was completely their fault for not sending the Rx to the pharmacy on time. I kept following up everyday for 2 weeks ahead of the appointment to let them know the meds hadn't reached CVS only to hear "we just sent the prescription to your pharmacy, check again". After letting them know 2 days before the scheduled procedure that the medicine still didn't reach the pharmacy and if we should reschedule the appointment they said they'll call me back to confirm. No calls were ever made to me and the day before the appointment I called them again to follow up and they said we'll have to reschedule because there isn't enough time to prepare and added $40 as penalty for not giving them an advance notice. I called my PCP to report this and request a different referral. While Dr. Mecum is wonderful as a caregiver, his staff is ruining his reputation and name. I will not be going back to him as a patient unless he fires his front desk appointment manager. read more

It is very disappointing and frustrating that Dr. Mecum has employees who are extremely unprofessional. He is an amazing doctor, but his staff is horrible. Today I tried to reschedule my appointment because I missed it on Monday due to illness. The Asian Lady began scolding me for missing the appointment and was extremely rude when I requested to speak to the Manager. She indicated that the Manager was not in at work today. Just stay away from this office. You will not get the help you need. All they want is to get you to do a colonoscopy. Because that's how they make their money. My appointment was at 1050am. I didn't see the so call doctor till 1200. They obviously overbook patients. He didn't want or care to know about my issues. Brush aside all my concerns. Just keep pushing for a colonoscopy. Which I already did about a year and a half ago with a clean result. Didnt get an exam. At the end. All he said was "colonoscopy is what i can offer you today" and walked out. The Asian lady at the front is rude and unhelpful. The unwillingness to help or verify insurance deductible is mind-boggling. Super long wait in the office. Dr. Mecum didn't look at my chart which lists many medications, and felt very rushed. He asked me briefly about my symptoms, but when I described how I felt like many things not explicitly GI were potentially related (fatigue, potential auto-immune issues with symptoms like raynaud's), he was dismissive and said "one thing at a time." I felt like he didn't take me seriously. He literally just told me to look at myplate.gov and to eat healthy. (I do.) He also never sent my notes back to my primary care doctor, who referred me. I called and she started in with attitude then has the audacity to push it back onto me when I respond with attitude in kind. Receptionist is the rudest person I ever came across. I was referred to by my primary doctor there. I had to call and schedule an appt. They asked for the authorization number and asked what type of insurance I had. I gave them the information but they insisted that my insurance had a group. I informed them that I only had straight medi-cal and she stated that all medi-cal has a group and to call my primary care doctor and get that information along with the authorization number and not to call the office until all that information is collected. I already had given the information and me working in the medical field as well knows damn well that they can check on their end for the auth number and check the eligibility through the website. Her professionalism and customer service needs a lot of work. I will not be going back or calling back for that matter. This place needs to be closed down from all the bad reviews it had or hire better staff with better customer service skills and people skill. read more

The nasty , old Asian lady at the front, his wife, needs customer service training. The other staff is nice but she ruins the whole experience. Strongly recommend avoiding if possible. The other reviews are all true, but I still gave it a chance because my options were limited. But I can confirm, it's bad all around. Probably the worst doctor visit I have ever had. The front office is rude and pushy, and isn't consistent with the instructions I got from the doctor. For example, the doctor told me to give them all the diagnostics, and I even hear him saying that to her. However, she then immediately calls me and says only send the latest lab test results, "I don't want everything". This is very bad and Dr. Mecum needs to be alerted of this. My experience with Dr. Mecum himself was also not great. He is not very good at listening and often mishears or mis-remembers something I said a minute or two ago and I have to correct him. I do think he's a nice guy and seemed pleasant (at least at the beginning) but he seems to be stuck in his own ways if you try to suggest anything, and the rest of the appointment was unproductive for that reason and the communication struggles. What made this experience even worse for me was that I had to wait about 3 weeks to see him for the first time, then we had a pointless time constrained 15-20 minute meeting where he said he needs more information and "could not help me today" and rather than taking it there at the moment as he did with one of the labs, he rushed out and made me schedule another appointment on a specific date 3 months forward. So the total time would be 4 months to a future appointment with zero diagnostics, recommendations, or anything useful for me. I'm sure they are busy and maybe this isn't their fault, but so much more the reason to look elsewhere if you need timely care. read more

I had my appointment at 8:20am on Wed. After almost 60 hours, they still haven't send the prescription to Rite Aids on Friday afternoon. After called the office, the woman who picked up the phone call at 4:57pm was pretty rude and yell that they are busy and ask me "wait" and hung up the phone. Seriously....? After almost 60 hours, you can't send the prescription out? Either you are very inefficient or you don't even care about patients. I have never had a doctor make me feel so unheard and small. Robert made me feel like the pain and discomfort that I have been feeling for more than 6 MONTHS is normal and a result of my occasional use of Ibuprofen that I take when I am in pain. He started talking to me in a way that I didn't fully understand and when I asked a question he rudely interrupted and said, "I'm not there yet, I'm already answering questions that are not on your referral" and proceeded to not answer the question. The pain I experience was so bad at a point that i went to the ER and the doctors there told me that i would need to do one of the following exams; a colonoscopy or endoscopy. Which led me to he seen by Robert. When he asked what I came in for, I expressed the pain and what I was told by several doctors and he told me that "he is not like other doctors who only want money and would do pointless procedures like endoscopy and colonoscopy and that what i have is normal and a cause of my occasional use of pain killers". I left the office in tears because he was so dismissive and demeaning, I was shocked that I was referred to a "doctor" like this. I left feeling worse than I did coming in. The star reviews compelled me to meet Dr. Mecum---as only the brightest, toughest MD's become surgeons. I have a signed release from patient to write this review and was present during appointments. Hi Rocio and his beautiful office ladies who were most caring and considerate over 4 months time. Specialists and surgeons have certain reputations some say nasty/nice. Dr. Mecum was professional, kind and humorous. Though a patient was observed clutching a cell phone in waiting room asking "got my money," comedy while waiting how fun! On the last visit, Dr. Mecum had us laughing before we left with a joke (promised I would not tell!) Vitals taken and family history was discussed. So grateful to observe stellar care over 4 month period of time. As far as the less than perfect reviews---state of a patient experiencing kidney failure is beset with decreased mental acuity. If I could rate the Drs office of Robert Mecum 0 stars I would. I have NEVER encountered a medical office that was so wildly unprofessional and racist in my life. I wouldn't recommend this Dr or this office to my worst enemy. We were refused services at his City of Industry office, which based off his other reviews it seems like we've dodged a bullet. Not only did the doctor not follow HIPPA rules and regulations neither did the front desk staff. They asked all kind of personal medical questions in room with other patients present. Privacy was not protected at all. Not to mention the doctor was doing a visit with another patient with the room door open so we could hear everything they were saying in the waiting room. This place is a joke. The doctors to the receptionist. My husband had a scheduled call with Dr. Mecum to go over his colonoscopy results and we did not receive a call. We even went as far as giving them 2 numbers to call incase one died. We called the office to explain that there were no missed calls on our phones and find out if it can be rescheduled. The person we spoke to was rude and not understanding of the situation. She even lied and said they called and both voicemails were full. NO THEY WERE NOT! She continued to inform us that we will be billed a $25 fee for no-show and have to pay another appt. schedule with the doctor. When my husband tried to fight it she became even more irate, told him he would need to be referred to another Gastrologist and HUNG UP ON HIM! Then a few hours later, some other lady from the office called my husband and yelled at him saying "YOU ARE NOT TO HARASS MY GIRLS HERE!" ITS YOU PEOPLE THAT MAKE OUR JOBS DIFFICULT!" (I'm sorry, YOU PEOPLE?!) not sure why she would say that but in all my years I have NEVER had a doctors office call back a patient and yell at them! After calming her butt down she was able to re-schedule us. Next Dr. Mecum calls my husband after a few hours and gives him the details of his results. He was nice about everything oddly, and ends up telling my husband that he has a fatty liver but that is the least of his worries. He can't have a drop of alcohol and he has some other disease of the intestines that was really serious. All this information was verbally said to my husband over the phone quickly. He tells my husband that he will send all the test results to his primary doctor to go more in detail and figure out the next steps with the primary doctor. So naturally we are worried and immediately follow some of the instructions given. Stop drinking, go on a diet to cleanse the liver and get him excercising more. We have no idea what he meant by "THAT IS THE LEAST OF YOUR WORRIES." So a week goes by and my husband sees his primary doctor to go over the results given by Dr. Mecum. Tje doctor tells him, he doesn't know why he said all of those things because his liver is fine and everything else looks good. Just a little high on the cholesterol. We asked then why would Dr. Mecum say all those things if they are incorrect? All we could get was "maybe he was having a bad day". A BAD DAY?! IM SORRY, AREN'T YOU THE DAMN DOCTOR AND WE ARE THE F-ING PATIENTS! THAT IS COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL AND YOU SHOULD QUIT YOUR JOB ALONG WITH YOUR CRAPPY TEAM! I have never in my life seen anything like this! how many other patients is he giving wrong information to and how many other patients are dealing with irate receptionists and being served unprofessional service. The doctor seems to be very nice, caring and thorough; I have seen him twice now for my every 5-year colonoscopy. This latest time was a huge mess but mostly with the surgical center which I observed Roches crawling around in the lobby. "Disgusting!" Also, the office personnel seem to be stretched thin. I had a pre appointment and I drove far to find the parking lot locked. I called the office, and no answer. I continued to call thinking they must be late arrivers - still no answer.
