SPACIOUS AND GRASSY (5 stats)…read more It's so hard to find a good dog park in San Diego that has ample space, separation of big and small dog park, and grassy. It's in the heart of Poway at their civic center that has everything for the community. Lots of community and family public usages for their community-residence and very clean. We had a Pomeranian meetup here and imagine a ton of tiny Poms roaming safely and freely in a very spacious dog for smaller dogs. Occasionally some people brought their small to medium dog that had big dog energy in the area but all owners were respectful and watched their dog's actions. I didn't see a singly poop in the park and it was one of the cleanest dog parks I've been to. Too bad it's a far drive or we would be regulars. This was the first time I seen my new Pomeranian open up and play. She didn't want to leave and kept playing and playing after over an hour being there. I do wish there were some signs. The civic center area is big and we had walked around just to find the dog park section is in the back behind the baseball fields. The best part of this park is that the people who come are so friendly and you get to play with their awesome dogs as well as your own. So many cute doggies!! I have found that the shared interest of dog ownership makes for endless hours of great conversation. On May 30, 2018, I adopted a rescue Doxle (aka Deagle) puppy. His name was Rocco and he had the body of a Daschund and the head of a beagle, big floppy ears and big feet. He had white feet and a white tipped tail. He was medium-sized, about 26 lbs. I started bringing Rocco in October 2018 as soon as he recovered from being neutered. He was super friendly with every dog he met and just wanted to play with everyone. I loved watching him play with other dogs here. We would arrange playdates with other dogs, including his best friend, Jack, a Cardigan Corgi. They would run around the small dog section for 90 minutes. This place was a godsend. As the saying goes, "a tired dog is a well-behaved dog", and my Rocco became much better behaved at home once I started visiting this park. On Nov 26, something tragic and fatal happened to Rocco. While i was out playing a tennis tournament match in La Jolla, my 80 year-old father-in-law somehow let Rocco escape from our backyard and Rocco died when he was hit by a car. 13 days later, an abandoned dog that turned out to be a Belgian Malinois, found me at Canyonside Park while I was teaching tennis. The next day, after going to Black Mountain Veterinary Hospital to check for a microchip, I found myself in the large dog section for the first time. I asked around if anyone recognized this dog. So many people were so helpful and concerned. Within an hour, two people offered to adopt the dog. One was a dog trainer who used to train this breed for the Police dept. My wife came and took over. She said that three people offered adopt her in the next two hours. In the last 6 days, I have visited this park every day. I have met so many great people and dogs. The reason I give this place 4 stars instead of 5 is that having visited the Poway dog park, it is easy to compare and realize that this place lacks the following amenities: 1. Lights 2. Grass - the large dog side is just dirt with no grass whatsoever 3. Picnic tables 4. Trees (for shade) 5. More seating - benches there is only one bench on the small dog side and two on the big dog side. This place is popular and gets crowded at times. I don't mind it being crowded, because having more dogs means more opportunity for my dog to play. But, it also means less chance of being able to sit down. a few picnic tables would be great.

The large dog park has dog agility climbing structures, the small dog park does not. There is no shade and whatever grass they had has perished thru the years into dirt. There are seating areas and each park has a dog water fountain. The parks are pretty clean but an occasional dump here and there. The people that bring their dogs here are mostly Civitia Park residence because the small parking lot ope. To public (10 slots, if even) is a challenge to get a spot. We like to spend a little time in the dog park and the walk the stairs of Civita Park down to the human park.

There were only two dogs there but Gibbs had a blast playing with them in the unfenced area. The grass was in relatively good shape and the area was pretty clean. The only down side was there's no water fountain for the dogs. There was a bucket of water probably provided by some nice dog owner. I brought my own water bottle for Gibbs but the other dog owner didn't have water for her dog so we shared the one I had. The name is a bit deceptive as I thought it would be bigger. Came here on a Sunday afternoon. There was about 8 children playing on the park, a few dog owners walking their dog, and a family shooting the basketball around on the small half court. You can probably walk the entire strip in about 4 minutes so if you're go a hour long walk, know you'll be going back and forth a few dozen times. What I do like about it is that the grassy area is just all grass and relatively flat. You can lay out. You can do cartwheels. You can play frisbee. But it does feel like as soon as there is 20 people here, it would feel crowded. Plenty of parking in the surrounding neighborhood or on the street.
