Fantastic hosts and a warm welcome each time I have been. Also a great venue for a party, there is room at the back which can accommodate a band, buffet and around 70 guests (my sister had her 40th there). Highly recommended & exciting to see how popular this venue will be when more people discover the quality of each aspect of the place!

My first impressions were that it seemed to be a very nice traditional pub with a good atmosphere and friendly bar staff. A good selection of beer, fair prices and a nice seating lay out. However the buffet food was absolutely vile. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. At £6.50 a head to eat as much as you like you can find much better in Hillsborough. I felt I had wasted my money and felt ill for the rest of the evening and the next day. I'm very rarely one to ever complain about food but this was bad. The only good thing about it was the soup for starters and I wished I'd just had about 6 bowls of that instead of any of the main courses. As soon as we finished we left and we won't be back again.

It had a cottage though, The cottage was later merged into the pub buildings when later additions and alterations were carried out. Matthew Ellison was an inn keeper, although not until 1802 was the "cottage " on the site first mentioned as being a public house. Then it was referred to as The Sign of the Harrow. There follows a fairly complicated passage about family deaths and inheritances. Matthew Ellison, it is believed, died fairly soon after getting the land, leaving his property to his four children, Sarah, Elizabeth, David and George, Sara
