My boyfriend and I had THE BEST experience with Patrick and MDI e-bikes! This was our first time ever renting e-bikes, and what better place to do it than in Acadia. Not only was Patrick such an amazing person to work with, you can tell he really cares about his company and the people that rent from him. And the bikes were TOP TIER! We were able to enjoy our whole day exploring the carriage trails without any worry about the batteries dying. We did the big loop around Eagle Lake, down to Jordan Pond House and around the big mountain with about 50% (9am-3pm) juice left once we returned the bikes. We also had other family members who rented e-bikes from other companies for a cheaper price and all of their batteries died mid-way so they had to bike back, which was a bit rough for them. It's totally worth spending a bit more for a higher quality bike like MDI!! Thanks Patrick, you provided us with the best day of our trip! If you are looking to explore the carriage trails of Acadia National Park, renting from MDI Bike is an absolute must. My fiancée and I had an incredible time, and a huge part of that was thanks to the owner, Patrick. He is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely cares about your experience. Before we set off, Patrick took the time to make personal adjustments to our e-bikes and ensured we knew exactly how to operate them correctly and safely. He even provided a fantastic map highlighting the best trails and landmarks to hit during our ride. The e-bikes themselves are top-notch and made tackling the park's hills immensely easier. They come fully equipped with a helmet, a lock, and a highly convenient small pack to carry your belongings. The pack even has a designated spot for a water bottle--which you should definitely bring for the long, scenic ride! Returning the bikes was completely hassle-free. My wife and I rented e-bikes from Patrick today. The forecast called for rain & he offered to let us cancel at no charge because he didn't want us to have a bad experience. We only had two days left in our trip & thought what the heck - let's go for it. We got SOAKED but had an amazing time - one that we'll remember for a long time to come. The bikes were phenomenal. Made the trails so much more enjoyable than if we'd had to fight to pedal all the inclines on our own power. We went for a good five hours and barely used 1/3 of the batteries! We couldn't be happier with our experience with Patrick & MDI e-bikes & wholeheartedly recommend this business to anyone looking to rent e-bikes in Acadia National Park. read more

Patrick was awesome from the moment we contacted him and through the moment we returned our e-bikes after our adventure! He was very nice and helpful and treated us so well. He paid close attention when I was trying out the bike in the parking lot and lowered my seat twice, without me asking, to get it to just the right height for me. We ended up riding almost 40 miles! Patrick with MDI e-bikes was a great person to rent from. He was very knowledgeable about the bikes and the trail system/park. The pickup/drop off instructions were clear and he was easy to reach if we had questions. The bikes were comfortable and easy to use, and we had no worries about the charge running out during our day. Meeting at Hull's Cove is a lot easier than renting from a shop in Bar Harbor, since there is ample parking and the Carriage Roads are right there! The cost was slightly higher than some other options, but it was well worth it. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this company or rent from them again. Thank you! read more

MDI e-Bikes proudly serves Acadia National Park! Meet us at the Hulls Cove Visitor Center parking lot. 25 Visitor Center Road, Bar Harbor Maine in Acadia National Park. The carriage roads entrance is located at the far left end of the parking lot. After booking your reservation online we meet at 8:30 am on your rental day. I provide the e-bike, helmet, map, fender storage bag, lock and instruction (including operating the e-Bike and safety tutorial). Enjoy exploring Acadia’s carriage roads on your self guided tour. MDI e-Bikes features Class 1 step-through e-Bikes that are compliant with Acadia National Park regulations. You will be riding premium Specialized Turbo Como 4.0 IGH e-Bikes with a carbon belt drive and internal gear hub. The battery is extended range and easily lasts the duration of the rental. Their online cutoff is 2pm the day before, which means you have to call-fine, except the woman who answered never called us back. We had to chase her down twice just to confirm a reservation. We arrived at 12:50 for a 1pm pickup and stood there watching the one staff member slowly process an entire family who was renting bikes for the next day on our time. The guy who eventually got us our bikes moved like he was underwater. Directions? He handed us a map that would challenge a cartographer and told us to "turn at the thing that blinks." That was the landmark. The blinking thing. We missed a turn. My husband's bike was mechanically broken. He came back with mud splattered across his backpack, shorts, and hair. And the e-bikes if you've rented an e-bike anywhere else in your life, do not expect that here. These things have less power than a child's ride-on toy. I'm not exaggerating. There is no assist. There is no joy. Unprofessional, disorganized, and a complete waste of a half day in a place where you have limited time and actually want to have fun. Skip it.

A mechanic cheerfully popped on the SPD pedals we brought with us, and we were off, departing from BHBS for the park. We felt like we lived on those bikes for three days. We popped by the shop on the third morning for fresh shifter batteries and a tire top-off. Return was effortless and gave us a chance to browse the well-merchandised shop. We also had an enjoyable chat with owner Peter who definitely knows what he's talking about when it comes to cycling.

She gave me a blank look and after a while called for "Nate". When I visited the store in early June it was packed to the gills with merchandise. I wasn't in need of anything but I was certainly impressed with their merchandise and the many great brands they carry like Toad & Co., Prana, Smartwool and Darn Tough. The shoe and sock section was particularly impressive. I came to Bar Harbor fully prepared for my planned outdoor adventures but I think next time I might come a bit less prepared so I have a reason to do some shopping at Cadillac Mountain Sports.

The bike route is full of incredible views. We stopped frequently to take pictures. There was not much traffic. If you take the bike path across the peninsula, be aware that it is a heavy gravel path with some steep winding curves and downhills. Even as experienced cyclists, we decided to walk that part. There are 2 restaurants on the loop but unfortunately both were closed on Mondays. However we found another restaurant once we returned the bikes. It was a great day.

There are lakes, streams, ponds, scenic lighthouses, boats, bikes, trails, gardens, crazy hikes with vertical iron rungs, rolling forest hikes, lighthouses, and more! The main issue you'll run into is crowds.. lots of people want to come here, especially in July and August. Best thing to do, go in as early as possible, do some things, take a break, go back again after 3. If you're early, you can get a parking spot then work from there. If you are flexible on time, take advantage of the shuttles, but be warned, they may be full, and they don't run every 10-15 minutes, so plan accordingly. I would be in the park by 7, have plans maybe on a tour in Bar Harbor late morning or early afternoon, then head back after 4, and I got to all the must-do's, ie hiked the Beehive, the Bubbles, Cadillac Mountain sunrise and sunset (reserve this early as spots sell out, I booked mine 3 months in advance the minute they released and they were sold out shortly later, especially sunrise tickets), Jordan Pond and popovers, Bass Harbor Lighthouse, as well as some boat tours in the area, including very successful whale and puffin watching. For more hints and tips, I watched some YouTube videos, there's great info out there, especially the videos from Ash, a former park ranger, who has loads of helpful tips to get around and not spend your trip sitting in traffic or waiting in a parking spot.
