The description when…read morewe bought tickets gave very little details only that it may contain a variety of acts and some political humor. What we got to see was nothing short of brilliant. The sketches were done with simple costumes and lighting, yet the presentation was really well played out. We laughed our way through and even had moments of sad reflection that made you feel as if they knew exactly what we needed to see and hear in order to leave feeling a little lighter because someone else understood your pain. It was a cathartic experience and one that well rounded out our exciting adventure into Victoria. Don't be disappointed when you pull up and see the front entrance to the location. It doesn't carry curbside appeal, but trust me the act is worth seeing. We bought VIP ticket seats, which didn't prove to be much better than the regular. But we were lucky to have a comfy sofa to sit on.

Expect brilliant sketch comedy, gutsy up close and personal chats with God (who is - of course - a transvestite) and musical reenactments of anything you never thought could be done as a musical. Rebel Rebel (585 Johnson) usually has tickets which tend to sell out quickly.

The Roxy has also employed at least two employees for 10 years. Their popcorn is real, with real butter, and reasonably priced, and delicious. On Tuesdays, you can see a double feature for $2.50! It's a bit broke-down - some of the seats have seen better days, there's a stain/eggshell from some audience jackass that's been high on the wall for ages, and the bathrooms have a distinct camp-latrine smell, but if the Roxy changed much or got all fancy and expensive, I'd be heartbroken. I just don't get it. That said, the RBCM continues to hit curatorial home runs. Its exhibits are consistently imaginative, engaging, and beautifully designed--whoever leads their creative direction is a bloody genius.

tucked away in victoria's historic chinatown at fan tan alley is a small museum that deserves far…read moremore attention than it seems to get. while it may not be large, what it offers is something many museums struggle to provide: a personal connection to history. the volunteers who welcomed us were incredibly knowledgeable and eager to share stories that bring the exhibits to life. rather than simply reading display panels, we found ourselves learning about the experiences of chinese canadians who faced discrimination and exclusion in ways that are difficult to imagine today. one story that stayed with me involved chinese children being separated from other students because they were considered to make others "uncomfortable." community members and parents refused to accept this treatment quietly, organizing and advocating for better conditions and equal opportunities for their children. these stories transform the museum from a collection of artifacts into a reminder of how ordinary people challenged injustice and helped shape the canada we know today. one feature i especially appreciated was the mahjong table and set available for visitors. it's a simple addition, but it offers a glimpse into an important social tradition that has connected families and communities for generations. sitting down at the table helps visitors understand that chinatown's history is not only about hardship and discrimination, it's also about culture, community, resilience, and everyday life. as the oldest chinatown in canada and the second oldest in north america, victoria's chinatown is an important historical site in its own right. this museum provides valuable context for what you see when walking through its streets and alleyways. visiting before or after exploring the neighbourhood makes the experience much more meaningful. best of all, admission is free. if you're visiting victoria, make a point of stopping in. you may arrive expecting a brief visit, but you'll likely leave with a deeper understanding of a community whose contributions, perseverance, and stories are an essential part of canadian history.
