This place gets especially packed during the 'Listowel Races' in mid-September and it is absolutely brilliant! If you're coming to Ballybunion, or Baile an Bhunneanaibhgh, (which I only heard of previously from…read morean old Irish song: "Ballybunion by the sea"), chances are you'd be coming here either for it's wide open sandy beaches or maybe to play golf, as President Bill Clinton did in 1999, (a statue of him further down main street still recalls one of Ballybunion's most memorable days). I was in this in this small coastal village/town, (which is 15km west of Listowel), in 2007 working at the modern hugely impressive, 500 seat 'Tinteán Theatre'. The place has a very impressive number of pubs too, a great number of them with names appealing to golf mad tourists like The Freeway & The Bunker, and of course The Presidents Bar! Oh I sampled them all in the week or so I was here, but the one I remember for it's hospitality & of course good beer, was The Railway. (Ballybunion once had a strange, steam-powered monorail that linked the town with Listowel). I'll never forget it that it was whilst watching the tv in the Railway one evening that I was first introduced to "The Podge & Rodge Show" on RTÉ 2. Not that the tv was allowed to kill the art of conversation, and a grand fella I was working with called Jack impressed us all with his ability to identify all the national county hurling teams from a display of model players. A good old place for a sing song too, and I heard some jokes about Kerry girls which my undaunted respect for them will not allow me to repeat here! So you get the idea, I have very harmonious memories of Ballybunion's Railway Bar, so appropriately I'll end with with a verse of the song: "To take a walk down Main Street, and see my friends from home, Go tell my own true sweetheart, I never more will roam, Go tell the lads I'm coming back--that's where I want to be, in my little Irish home town, Ballybunion by the sea."

Murphy's is very much a locals' pub. It has to be. It's in the middle of nowhere in a small town on the coast of Ireland! It's a place to meet your neighbors, or in our case, the people who live in the town we were staying in for the weekend. The town of Brandon is a beautiful place, and the people you'll meet have probably lived there their entire lives, so everyone knows each other and is (as is typical) friendly as can be. You won't find anything special at Murphy's - except if you're there on a live music night. But you'll enjoy yourself, and if you're in Brandon you won't have many other options!

The trail begins in Tralee and its Day 1 is about 13 miles and finishes in a place called "Camp," where Ashes is located. The food here was hearty and perfect for recovery after a long hiking day. Good, fresh, cold pints and a few local brews. Great Irish ambience and decor as well, from old Guinness paraphernalia to mid-century kitsch. It felt great to be there. The staff was really nice and accommodating as well. And that is for me, THE best part about our visit here. See, due to our overnight/redeye flight to Ireland from the USA, we arrived in Tralee at around 1:45pm and only began our hiking trail at around 3:00pm. We had to cover 13 miles and get to Ashes before they closed for the night, and we got there *just in time.* Yet the folks there cooked us a great meal and treated us so well. We couldn't thank them enough. I read one of the poorer reviews below; some travelers may find it a bit pricey but to be honest it's on par for the area - we were walking on foot there for 9 days and this was not at all overpriced. And as a spicy-food eater, I've always found myself adding a little salt, pepper, and hot sauce to most dishes in ireland ;) We loved Ashes and I'll surely be back if I find myself on the Dingle Peninsula again.

Outside seating with a view of the ocean but beware it's generally not warm here & the breeze & spray from the ocean can make it rather chilly. Dress accordingly. Spontaneous music erupts at anytime with locals bringing violins, guitars & their beautiful voices for a singalong or just a ballad. I loved everything here & as I say if you want that authentic Irish feel, come here & you will have wonderful memories which will make you return.
