McLeod Eco farm is a self sustained bed and breakfast, far from hustle and bustle of the city life. The farm is located on an old prison ground and old prison cells and buildings are still intact, some have been cleaned and used as accommodation for those who wants a taste of the old prison life.
It is located 20 minutes away from the island's pier where you can fish, swim and jump on the ferry back to mainland vic. There are about 3 campsites on the island and McLeod Eco on the south east of the island is probably the most basic of all.
There are 3 types of accommodation: gaol cells ( about 15 are cleaned and each houses a bunk bed ), the main cabin ( previously prison guard quarter) which has about 12 rooms, kitchen and shared bathrooms, and lastly small quarters with own bathroom for couples and small groups.
All guests are able to use the main industrial kitchen in the dining area, outdoor woodfire pizza oven and use all the fresh produce they gather
There are no electricity line on the island, so expect basic facilities. The property has its own generator and is solar powered and uses rainwater tank.
Food served here are grown and produced by Mark the owner and nothing is wasted here everything gets recycled
Most guests are camp groups who self cater and backpackers on working visa. There is private access to the beach, lots of koalas all around the island and in the morning you can see mark feed his pigs and chooks.
The backpackers we met there managed to gather a bucketful of oysters and nothing beats the taste of sea to table, fresh and sweet!
Being an ecofarm, it needs to be noted that everything is in basic form. So if you choose to visit, expect lots of wildlife ( including the ugly critters), weather and self sustained practice.
P.s. Kylie Minogue once owned a property here and bring a torch to explore the creepy old gaol cells read more
