This is a gem in our town. I stumbled upon it when I relocated to Hollister and was building a fence. It's old fashioned, which is actually kind of refreshing. Having staff that acknowledges you + actually has knowledge is actually refreshing and something I've rarely experienced at big box stores. My first visit, the owner was in the yard, overseeing the orders and keeping the place running like a well oiled machine. I've since shopped there multiple times. The last time, I called, (they actually answer their phone!) Asked about railroad ties, the gentleman had all the info () + they were delivered to my house that same day. Time is money, and not having to drive to another town is worth a lot to me. I love spending my money locally, supporting my town, a small family business. This is truly an old fashion lumber yard. I have to make mention that in an age of the big lumberyard, big hardware stores, just don't seem to have really the good mind to service. I'm not seeing some of the employees at some of the big stores don't give service, but in general, it's not a good experience anymore to go to the big stores. McKinnon lumber came through with 5 stars x 5!!I am putting some new shelving in my place, no big thing, I didn't really want to make a big mess, I have to know how to do all this, but being retired, I don't have all the tools I needed to make this right. This is a relatively clean job, except for the cutting and sanding, which I didn't feel like doing! I had all the exact measurements, gave them to the staff at McKinnon Lumber, they told me they be happy to help me out. It was a relatively quick and easy job. They were all cut perfectly. The edges were clean, it was a good grade lumber, and they cut the plywood shelving stock perfectly, and even delivered it the next day. It was a small order, but when you think about it, you can't beat that kind of service the price might be a bit higher? But I really don't like going to the big box stores, support your local businesses, with real people wait on you they actually fill out a slip on paper with a pen, they greet you with a good day, they're not scanning everything sending you to a kiosk or self check out. This is how you make a new customer, a long, standing customer relationship, the way it should be. Compared to Home Depot employees these guys actually had answers and suggestions rather than just blank stares. Beyond that, they obviously hire local high school students to move lumber in the yard. There is staff to load your purchases or make those special cuts that you require. They stock species of wood that the big stores don't. This is the kind of place I used to visit growing up in LA. Friendly & helpful people, nails & bolts sold by the pound, sage advice from experienced yardmen. This is a pre-BIG BOX era lumber yard, and, alas, is a vanishing breed. The prices are similar to the big boxes, but the service is far superior. It's a no-brainer; if my alternative is to travel in my gas guzzling PU to Gilroy or Salinas for lumber, I always choose local McKinnon! The downside: the hours. As a DIYer, I work around the house on Sat & Sun, but they close at 5PM on Sat & are closed on Sun. Considering their size, I can't blame them, but I wonder whether they might do more business if they stayed open until 6PM on Sat, and closed on Weds instead of Sundays? Ah well, can't have it all. read more

Years past before Lowe's and Home Depot came to Gilroy we received really good service they helped us cut some particle board and helped us patch up a book case. Years have passed now and we don't require a lot lumber. However remembering the initial service I decided to go down to get some fence pickets. Maybe the mistake I made was I took one of the pickets we had purchased from Lowe's or maybe it was just a bad day for the employee, but when I inquired about the price of the pickets, the employee let out one of the biggest sighs, like it was an inconvenience I was even there. Then when the price came back at 9.00 + I said thank you but no. I am not sure if I will go back in or not because everyone just raves about the service they have received, but if the owner/manager sees this please speak with your office staff and coach them that asking a price should never bee an annoyance. After a trip to Tahoe we fell in love with corn hole and set out to make one ourselves. I took the plans into McKinnon and spoke with an older gentlemen, who I believe was the owner. He looked at our plans, and instead of just pulling the wood out, helped me to reconfigure the wood so that it would be substantially cheaper!! On top of that, he cut the wood exactly how we wanted it so all we would have to do was put it together and paint! I've been doing business with McKinnon Lumber since 1982. John Barrett (the owner) is friendly and helpful. I have remodeled three houses using all wood and related supplies from this lumber yard. My contractor wouldn't consider using anyone else. Their delivery is fast and free in town. It's kinda like Cheers, everyone knows your name. I really like this store. It has friendly, community oriented owners and the staff are usually knowledgeable and competent hard workers, even if they are not chatty. They have competitive pricing for a lot of items. It costs me $12 to drive to Gilroy in my truck so I'd rather shop here if I don't have a big list. Besides lumber they have tons of other stuff like insulation, concrete, roofing stuff and some general hardware items. I'd give it 5 stars but their corral boards are substandard and we have to drive there and pick every board or we get cracks and chips. We are replacing 5 acres of fencing in sections and this is can be tedious. I tried telling them to give me the good boards only and their good boards still had cracks. I feel I have to check out the rest of the lumber before I buy it as well because of a few P.T. posts in my last delivery that ended up being cracked as well. Delivery is fast and not expensive. Help Support this local business! These guys are awesome, no computers, no self checkout crap, no dummies that don't know the difference between a screw and a bolt. This place is ran by a true old school guy that knows his stuff and does things the way it should be done. I am willing to pay slightly more and not have to deal with the idiots at the big warehouse stores. They support local youth programs which is imperative to the community. I spend a lot of money at Home Depot, but I try to buy from McKinnon when I'm ordering lumber or other basic building materials because his prices match or even beat Home Cheapot, which is amazing, and you will get an intelligent answer to any questions you may have. Delivery is free if you are spending enough but even paying a small fee for delivery is a great option to have available when your time is limited. There are not many businesses in Hollister that I can recommend, but McKinnon Lumber is definitely one of them. read more
