Two things to note: The Stauer bedroom and Rummage room do each have their own private bathroom, but they are not attached to the room. You had to walk down the hall. The other two rooms (I forget their names: Maids room and something else) did have attached bathrooms. There are also no keys to lock your door (but a lock from the inside to sleep at night). We felt okay leaving our backpacks in the room, and everyone respected each other's privacy.

We had never been to McGregor, and wanted to hike around Effigy national monument and Pikes Peak. The Strauer House was a perfect launching point for these parks--only a 15-20 min drive away. The House is a comfortable walk from town (few blocks) and an easy drive from Marquette and Prairie Du Chen. AND our hostess was very friendly, helpful, and made a mean breakfast! (With such big beautiful breakfasts, we only really ate two meals-- breakfast and dinner --while under her roof!) The other travelers that came through while we stayed here were all very friendly and polite. Like other b&b's, the caretaker and family are on premises. But there's more than enough space to feel off on your own in this large home!

For starters, the home is beautifully decorated and the beds are comfortable! The kitchen was great for cooking a meal in and enjoying with friends at the dining table. We asked Katie for recommendations and she gave us a few which we thoroughly enjoyed. Pikes Peak has stunning views of the bluffs, By the Spoonful has amazing sandwiches, cheeses and beers and we dined at Old Man River. All of these are less than 2 miles away from the home and we enjoyed walking the streets of McGregor and looking in the shops. Can't wait to come back next year and bring our boat! We will definitely be enjoying the Mississippi River and fishing.

The Old Jail and FIrehouse Guest Suite is a a one-room suite complete with kitchen, dining area,…read morequeen bed, day bed/trundle and small fold-out bed. There is a quiet courtyard as well. When we arrived in McGregor, we were immediately greeted by Richard and Charlene who made sure we parked in a safe location. Richard helped with our bags. As we entered the suite, our senses are bombarded with an Americana motif taken to the nth degree. Almost every square inch is decorated by images and pictures of the old jail and firehouse. The Palucci's will fill you in on the history of the jail and some interesting stories. in addition, there are old trickets and toys representing firemen and the jail theme. Charlene's father was a fireman in Chicago and she has a tribute of him displayed in the kitchen area. Just about every square inch of this room is covered with something. Even the ceiling is wallpapered. If you have sensitivity to sensory overload then this is definitely not the place for you. But, if you appreciate the time and care that went into trying to make this one-room reflect the history of the town, then you will really appreciate the decor and ambiance. Although not officially a Bed and Breakfast, the Palucci's have generously stocked the fridge with pastries and cinnamon rolls, milk, juice, jellies, etc. The pantry has coffee, teas, and snacks. Richard and Charlene have gone out of their way to make sure you can make your way through all the switches and amenities that the place has to offer. In fact, they have written directions for EVERYTHING in the room. There are directions for which light switch is for which area of the room, how to turn the key to open the door, how long to keep the A/C running. You'll either find it endearing or eccentric. Another consideration is the location to Main Street. The room itself if just feet from Main Street and the Mississippi River is only about 4 blocks. But, with the big picture window open, all passerby's can see in. Not a big deal since you can close the blinds for privacy (there's even a note on how to do that). Overall, we really enjoyed our visit at the Old Jail and Firehouse Guest Suite. We found it clean and comfortable. We really appreciated the friendliness and care from RIchard and Charlene. We would definitely stay there again!

Cowboy Joe is one of the owners and you can tell how much time, love and care goes into maintaining the property. The cabin's are warm, cozy, clean and stocked with everything you could need. I do recommend bringing all of your food necessary for your stay because the cabin's are extremely secluded. Any businesses are about 20-30 min away and even then, what IS there is extremely limited.
