As it turns out, this pub was converted from a 1920s art deco cinema. While it doesn't scream art deco, it does make it a good venue for live music and other acts. In fact there were posters for an upcoming Tina Turner tribute band. I was there on a very chilly weeknight, so it wasn't really hopping. Towards the front were patrons simply enjoying beers, watching football and playing snooker. There were menus offering Indian food, but neither I nor anyone else was eating. The barkeep was nice and the prices were good. I've given an extra star because I like how they pay homage to the building's past (and the neighborhood) with loads of old photos and informational posters around the room. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit, but if in the neighborhood - check it out. Like Tina Turner said, "it's simply the best (on that particular block)."

The current Eagle does not have much in common with the pub I discovered more than twenty years ago on an edgy pub crawl (as in let's go to all the pubs on the edge of being closed down) when Ladbroke Grove was still rather dodgy and lined with pubs that got a bit dodgier the further North you went. It was very run down at the time and frequented by firemen from the station next door, tumbleweed and only one beer on tap as the landlady could not afford more than one barrel at the time. The pub's been through a few reincarnations since and I am just happy that it is still a pub. Just checked their website and apparently they aim to offer "The best of British - with a Bavarian twist" which explains the sauerkraut served with the hotdogs ... but most importantly it has a cosy pub feel to it with low lighting, mix-and-match furniture and music at a volume that allows for good chat. And it speaks for the team that the pub was still packed well past the happy hour of free drinks. Good contender for becoming my favourite local even if it means a bit of a walk uphill.

I waited and asked the staff, but they had no explanation, didn't investigate, and refused to refund me. To make matters worse, while I briefly stepped outside for a cigarette, someone cleared my table and took my half-eaten chips without asking. When I returned, my food was gone and the staff didn't care. This isn't just a mistake. With a valid receipt and no order delivered, I'm beginning to believe the cashier may have pocketed the money. If that's not theft, I don't know what is. Absolutely disgraceful experience. I will be taking this complaint further.

So... clean, inexpensive, delicious, and the atmosphere was nice. It was very airy also, larger than I had expected. Cocktails were a grapefruit raspberry lemonade something and a long cosmo. The Preston is my local pub. I'm not entirely proud of this fact. There is nothing special about it…read moreapart from that it is at the end of my road and within easy stumbling distance after a night out. A few years ago the owner took out the pool table, ripped out the standard 1970s faux Victorian decor and generally turned the pub into a bland, generic suburban drinking hole. I know, I sound bitter but tacky decor and pool tables are what local pubs in London should be about. The one bonus of the refurbishment are the heaters outside which you can control yourself rather than freeze/roast to death at the discretion of a sadistic pub landlord.
