While we were there, we ran into some friends who said they had been coming to McGee's for over 20 years, and we could understand why. We absolutely love McGee's Christmas Tree Farm! They are open for an *extremely* limited amount of time so go either Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving and go as soon as they open in the morning to beat the crowd. If you wait until Sunday they may not be open anymore! The trees are pricy (this year was $120 per tree regardless of size or type), but you are paying for an experience. If you are trying to be cheap go to a parking lot somewhere with pre-cut trees. My family takes so much joy wandering amongst the trees! We always stop and get coffee before we get there so we can stroll and sip. This year my toddler was old enough to walk around and he had a blast! We've visited many Christmas tree farms in the Bay Area so we decided to go up the mountain this year and we're so glad we did! McGee Christmas Tree Farm is the best! There's no Santa, workshop or elves BUT THEY HAVE BEAUTIFUL TREES! We spent almost 3 hours roaming their farm in search of 2 perfect trees. We had so much fun we didn't realized we'd been there so long! Once you've chosen your perfect tree, you just yell "cutter" and a friendly staff member will appear with a large saw to cut your tree down. Don't be afraid, they offer great tips for cutting your tree properly and they will also help cut it down if you need that as well! We got 2 trees so we had the pleasure of meeting 2 different "cutters" and both were very friendly and helpful. I met one of the owners (Mrs. McGee) while loading up our tree and she was a pleasure as well! Overall, great place, great people and most of all a great farm!! Well worth our 2 hour drive! Friendly staff and great prices make this our go to Christmas tree farm for the last several years. The tree helpers will assist with cutting down your tree and hauling it on a cart to one of the two check-out locations where your tree will be professionally wound with twine (not forced through a rough netting gizmo) and placed in your truck bed or on your vehicle for a safe trip home. Terrible experience picking out a tree. Didn't expect to be harassed by an employee here for "tips" and to learn all about how hungover he is from the night before and how he is just a temporary employee. Tipping culture is ridiculous now, really after $120 on a tree you ALSO expect a tip? We brought our own saw (which we weren't allowed to use), we didn't need it wrapped (that's unnecessary for us), and my husband was the one who carried it all the way from the very back lot to the front. The "cutter" awkwardly stood by me and my daughter making us feel uncomfortable and emphasized how he is a tip only employee and stared at me while it was getting it wrapped and my husband was paying for the tree, then proceeded to follow us down the path yelling at us and scoffing over a tip. Little did he know that had he not harassed us over a tip he could have got a $20 because that's all we had anyways. My husband just worked 72 hours straight as a paramedic but where is his "tips" for saving lives?? He doesn't expect that from his work and saving people but this hungover employee is so entitled that he expected it after doing a minuscule job that took 1 minute to cut. Deplorable first experience that we had to endure while driving over an hour to cut a tree and have a nice time with family. read more

We went to several and loved this spot! It's $70 or $90 which is high but they're all about $50-70 in this area. Super friendly and wrapped it up nicely for us to throw in the truck. You could easily throw one on your roof and there's not a height limitation. read more

Shopping for a Christmas tree at McGee's Tree Farm was a great outing. We found a 14ft tree, just what we needed for our church. All of the staff was so couteous, helpful and friendly. We were up here doing apples (Denver Dan's #14 see my review) and we decided to do a pumpkin patch. The place we were going to hit doesn't have any pumpkins so we stopped at this place. The lady Phyllis, who is running the farm is def IN CHARGE. She took the kids by the sleeve directing them to the rules. Guess cuz of the lack of watering its going to be slim pickins for pumpkins this fall. So keep that in mind when you go out shopping. So driving along the road you mostly see the sign for the Christmas tree farm next to High Hill Orchards. They will def sell out of their pumpkins before Halloween. You go driving past High Hill Farms and turn the corner and there they are. There is a big sign saying NO NO NO HIGH HILL PARKING!!! They only have a few spots to park in front of their barn and then along one side of the road. As you drive up you see all the beautiful pumpkins, the big pumpkin playhouse, various farm vehicles to climb on/take pictures with, and the insert-your-head-into-outrageous sign boards. There is a bench, several folding plastic chairs and stone bench for sitting. The bench has a broomstick in it with measures marked off for how much your pumpkin costs. There is a box to insert your cash or checks for good faith payments if Phyllis isn't there. We got a very generous sized pumpkin for $10, well worth it! Thank goodness we don't have to hit Bishops now!! There are NO food amenities or toilets at all, so be aware. They only take cash or checks. read more

My family and I drove up to McGee's Tree Farm and we had a wonderful experience. There were so many trees to choose from! We enjoyed going up and down the rows (and back again) until we finally found "The One". Everyone who worked there was so helpful and friendly, the service was OUTSTANDING. The tree farm was so organized and everything from cutting to twining to loading up the tree for a safe ride home went so smoothly. What a great way to start our Christmas Holiday. I rarely write reviews we just left McGee Christmas tree farm after visiting Apple hill for the weekend and they were top notch when it comes to service, I must admit I wasn't exactly looking forward to any drama associated with getting a tree but they make it so easy and efficient, find a tree yell out "cutter"!! And they come running you can have them cut it down or you can do it yourself, they wrap it up and stow it on-top of your vehicle while you pay for it (they don't take credit cards just Checks or cash FYI) but great service we will return likely next year!! read more

I usually only write reviews when I am super impressed with a place, but I felt it necessary to write about my experience today. Myself, my husband, and our two kids along with our friends family of 4 went to McGee's this morning. Our terrible experience began when we found our tree and called for the cutter to bring us the saw. A kid came over to us with the saw and told us it was a 9' tree and it would be $90. Mind you, it was a very busy day and most of the trees around ours being cut at the same time were $70 and our friend's tree across the main aisle was $70, but we didn't question it. We get to the front to pay and the girls asks "What type of tree?" I told her I didn't know what type of tree it is but it was a 9'. She asked which tree, so we pointed it out to her and she said, "OK, that's Douglas Fir. That is $70." That made more sense to me than the $90 we were quoted by the kid who brought us the saw, so I paid and went to have our tree wrapped. While walking over to the machine, my husband and I noticed a man walking extra close to us and eye balling our receipt. He actually grabs the receipt and proceeds to announce loudly "That is not a Douglas Fir tree. You were charged for a Douglas Fir tree. This tree is a $90 tree!" I replied, "I showed your cashier the tree and told her how tall it was. She is the one who told ME it was Douglas Fir and charged the $70 price." He then told us "she [meaning the cashier] doesn't know what she is doing," and we needed to "follow him" back to the cashier to get this "squared up" before he would allow our tree to go through the wrapping machine. When we got to the cashier, I asked her to confirm that I did show her the tree and told her how tall it was. She confirmed, but the guy just stood there looking at us. I just paid the other $20 and walked away. I didn't catch his name but he was an older guy with an Irish or maybe English accent. We were completely embarrassed and pissed off at the same time. They need to better train their cashiers on the species and correlating prices and learn some decorum when dealing with customers, especially when there is a mix up like this. There are plenty of gorgeous tree farms on Apple Hill. I will never return to this place and I would recommend Carson Ridge or Hillside Tree Farms instead. read more
