I want to start by saying I'm a 47 year old male, business professional. I strongly believe a great hairstyle is paramount to daily life and business. Recently relocated to the area and have tried to find the right barber/barbershop. After sharing my woes with my girlfriend she recommended Jason at McFly's. After my first cut/style, to say I was extremely pleased would be an understatement. Upon walking in, the vibes were high and this felt promising. Barbers were welcoming, greeting people by their first names when they entered, social, and overall comfortable and engaging. When it was my turn, I was greeted by Jason with a handshake and asked exploratory questions about what I was looking for. Jason totally understood me and gave great suggestions. He was extremely professional and detailed. Before he started he explained every step he would make along the way to ensure we were on the same page. We discussed products that would enhance my style and he got to work. The professionalism, display of knowledge/skill, cut, product selection, and style were perfect! Paid a little more for the barber I saw too which made me think he would be better. Tons of kids go here and so they are use to just chopping mops off and moving on it seems. Great place to get a haircut. They do a really good job here. My previous barber decided to retire and I was stuck as a free agent looking for a barber. I went here since the reviews were positive and I was not disappointed. I got one of the best haircuts I've had in a while. The only downside was I thought they are a little pricey for a cut before I got my haircut...BUT after my haircut I have to give it to these guys...these guys live up to the hype...they are worth the extra money because they do an absolute bang up job. I purchased a gift certificate for my son to get his beard trimmed and maintenance ($55). When he went in for his service he was told he couldn't use it because the person who sold it to me wasn't there. What?! I was not informed of this nor have I ever heard such a thing. Instead of leaving, he ended up staying and paid full price out of pocket. Once he was home, noticed the beard was un-even and scraggly under his chin. He had to correct it himself at home. After inconsistent service from another facility, twas time to find another provider. Fired up the Yelp app and found this place rather intriguing. Excellent reviews followed by exquisite photographs. Made the call on my way home from work to make an appointment. The fella on the phone says "we're not that busy come on in." Arriving I walked in sat down and was greeted with the question, "do you have an appointment?" " Nope, I was told to come on in, that you weren't that busy." Moments later I'm in a chair and service has begun. We exchanged pleasantries and began conversations. I was getting a haircut and shave after seeing the pictures. I take note of a few I walk hangings and see the sign, "CASH ONLY" Panic sets in as I immediately try to conduct inventory of the contents in my wallet. If all else fails, I would just have to make the SOS call for back up or convince them to allow me to run next door to get additional cash. As service is rendered, conversions are happening all around. To my left is someone discussing legal matters, others are cracking jokes, but the main standout was the Trump Bashing. It was very hard to exercise restraint. Armed with knowledge and statistics to counter every single point that was being made, I remained reserved as I was significantly out numbered. Then I was asked about the NFL and who I was supporting this year. I used this moment to express my position. " I am a US Navy Veteran. I will not tolerate nor support whining millionaires who claimed to be oppressed when in truth they are blessed. Then I asked, "where was their protesting on the off season?" Well the time came to settle up. Not knowing what to expect, I reached for my panic button and my wallet, then asked, "what's the damages?" The reply was $30, it just happened to be the last $30 in my wallet. I was relieved to know that I didn't have to phone a friend but felt crappy that I couldn't tip the provider. Overall the service is great but I was a little off putting with the political positions. To all those Trump haters here, I would ask, are you better off now then you were 2 years ago, 5 years ago, or even 8 years ago? Then understand that patrons with opposing views do spend money also, and have more money to spend due to policies set forth by this administration. McFly's Barber shop is in the historic district of downtown La Port IN. From the moment you walk through the door it's like stepping back in time. It has Barber antiques in a show case, all hard wood floors and even an old 19th centenary cash register. There are 3 barber chairs with 3 amazing barbers and they could add more in the future if they choose too because they have the space. The conversations that go on there are often funny and interactive. It gives off a great vibe and makes everyone feel like they are welcome. It was my first time coming to McFlys and I even traveled 30+ mins to come here because I just moved to Indiana (Valpo) and I've not found a good barber shop yet so I decided to try here. I was not disappointed either. The wait was about 30mins but it was worth it. McFlys does a great job with cutting hair and shaving/ trimming beards the only thing they didn't do was shape eye brows. I was not really a eye brow shape guy but I tried it at another barber shop and I have to tell you it makes a difference. So far McFlys is the closest place I've found to giving the quality of hair cuts and shaves I'm use to back in Chicago. I tried a place in crown point and must of had a new guy cause he totally didn't listen to what I wanted and messed my hair up. Then instead of a straight razor for a shave I got an electric shave...... there's a big difference! I won't go anywhere else. I love this shop! Jason and the crew are true professionals, this is a real barbershop. These guys fix the sloppy $9 dollar hair cuts! Along with the great haircuts, it's got a great atmosphere. Good conversation, some random zombie karate movie playing on the television..... rap music one day, thrash metal the next. The debates between the barbers are fantastic to listen to, patrons often participate in the conversations. I always have one good laugh while I am in there. I personally go to Jason P., the owner of the shop. I was impressed with all of the trophies and plaques he has won form the ability to cut hair properly. That alone should tell you enough. He works with my crazy schedule and always finds time to fit me in when I'm home sometimes staying late. No detail is overlooked, my cut is perfect, every time. Jason and all of his barbers take their time. This is a quality job. They aren't rushing to get to the next person in line. They cut your hair until it is done correctly. They also keep their start times accurate, I have never waited more than a minute or two past my start time. Even during peak periods. I'm kind of a fanatic when I travel. Over the years, before I started going to McFly's, I have visited the most renowned barbershops in New Orleans, Chicago, New York etc. on business trips. McFlys stacks up with any of them. I had my Wife bring my Son in for a haircut, and after they got home and he washed his hair the left side stuck out like a porcupine. She ended up taking him back and having one of the other barbers fix the problem. Unbeknownst to me they were charged a second time when they came back. Now $20 isn't cheap for a kids haircut, but charging another $20 on top of that to fix an issue is highway robbery. There is a saying, "screw me once shame on you, screw me twice shame on me!" Then the owner actually came over to him TWO separate times sharing his Batman cars/figurines with him, so he had something to play with.
