Maureen has been doing my taxes for years and it has been simple, quick, accurate, the price has been fair, and, well, overall fantastic! Tim, her son, has been in the industry for 20+ years and is taking over the business. He did my taxes, and my dad's taxes last year and it was like a seamless transition from Maureen. He was very easy to understand, fair, answered all my questions and made the process painless. I don't come to Long Beach much anymore but I'll be having him continue to do my taxes - he's that good - just like Maureen was! Maureen is the owner of McDonough Tax Service. The business was started by her mother and father. Maureen has personally prepared approximately 900 taxes per year for about 40 years. Maureen has been my tax preparer for 13 years. She also prepares taxes for my brother, my grown daughter and her husband, four of my brother's friends, a friend of mine (a lawyer), my friends family trust and her sister too. All of us have received excellent service by someone who knows taxes better than the majority of IRS agents. I have personally watched Maureen on the phone with IRS agents several times. Each and every time Maureen walked the IRS agent through their own tax books explaining why a tax form was filled out a certain way. Each and every time the agent went along with Maureen and was satisfied Maureen was right. Here's another outstanding feature of McDonough Tax service; The price for having one of the sharpest tax preparers in the business doing our taxes is far less than the big chain tax services common to most of us. While waiting in the outer office for my appointment time, I have overheard Maureen tell new clients their last tax preparer made mistakes on their returns and told them how to recover money that was due them. I have also overhead people complain about something, Maureen would review their returns and found documentation that she advised them of what they should do, but they didn't do as advised. Then they complained things didn't go the way they wanted. Maureen may not be perfect, but she's far ahead of others in business. I realize Maureen will retire one day and we will have another prepairing our returns. This might seem like a future problem, except Maureen is training her own family to take over the business. Maureen is a perfectionist and everything must match and be balance to the last penny. I am sure her replacement will do the same. Here is something very uncommon; over the years, Maureen found 4 errors in the computer programs used by professional tax preparers. That says a lot about Maureen and the quality of service you can expect at McDonough Tax Service. Be advised, when Maureen makes suggestions or offers advice, PAY ATTENTION, she is that good. I personally have been in the business world and have seen people unable to take responsibility for their own actions and choices. If I were a betting man, I would put my money on Maureen when it comes to the only negative review. I'd bet dollars to donuts the person who wrote the only negative review either didn't do as Maureen advised, left something out or wanted Maureen to pay for their mistakes. This person had Maureen do their taxes for twenty years? I've know Maureen for thirteen years. All the people I know who have Maureen do their taxes agree with me. Maureen is far beyond exemplary. Maureen is friendly, fast, more accurate than a machine and really cares for and about her clients. All of her clients I've talked with have the opinion of her that I do. What a rarity. This is why McDonough Tax Service never advertises. Word of mouth by happy and grateful clients keeps Maureen working at her capacity. I personally have watched Maureen turn clients away. I relied on this company for doing my taxes for almost 20 years, but no more. The principle, who has been dismissive & condescending, just ripped me off for a149.00 penalty from the IRS for not paying the amount I was supposed to (overpaid) I got the refund because, despite my protests that I had paid for a the first quarter's taxes, she had D pay a higher amount. When I called to discuss it, she said "oh I thought you were just confused, a lot of people get confused." When I pressed it-she again admitted the mistake but never offered to pay the penalty, insisting that I had done something wrong. Like most people, I rely on an honest patient tax preparer and if you do too, avoid this business. read more

I have been using McDonough Tax Service and have known Maureen for in excess of 33 years. It was 1984. I was going through a divorce, and was uncomfortable with the idea of using the same tax preparer I had used while married- a friend of my ex's. I was talking with a friend at work who ran a small business on the side, and he recommended Maureen, of McDonough's Tax Service. He said she was very thorough, knowledgeable, and honest. And she's a nice person too. I decided to check her out, and called and made an appointment. When I met Maureen, I found everything my co-worker said to be true. I was very happy to be having my tax preparation done by a small local business versus a corporation. You get more personalized attention- instead of being just a 'number'. Over the years, Maureen has given me excellent counsel on how to most effectively meet my tax obligations while at the same time not pay more than necessary- with the utmost legality of course! Truthfully, I was married & divorced 2 more times since 1984, and also went through the experience of my parents divorcing in 1989(my father used Maureen's counsel, tax services, and notary during his divorce as well). Maureen assisted me in helping my mother when she had some issues with the IRS. In 2011, my mother passed, and I was executor of her estate. Maureen was VERY patient and kind in assisting me in the duties I had to carry out financially/ tax-wise. In early 2015, after a short stint of renting out my mother's house, and subsequent renovation, we sold the house. And again, Maureen was there for me for all the legal details. And finally, in mid 2015, I retired from my job and of course, true to form, Maureen was there for me, helping me make the right decisions regarding taxes. In short, over the past 33 years, I don't think I could have asked for a better tax preparer. She has always been kind & helpful even throughout the year when I call her up and ask her a (tax related) question. In addition, the staff at McDonough Tax Service, while not the same for the past 33 years, has always been most respectful and helpful- a true reflection of the person Maureen is.
