Valentine's dinner…read more.. It was a set menu, good choices, but poor execution. I had the scallop entre, and there was one lonely scallop with a horrible textural crumb, and fatty gelatin base. The barramundi main was nice, besides the potato with pink grapefruit pulp mixed in. Potatoes and pink grapefruit? Yup! Tastes about as good as you imagine - disgusting. The potatoes were also infused with some bitterness that I couldn't place. Some misplaced micro herb. The dessert was a saving grace! Mint chocolate ice cream, raspberry purée, macaron, and chocolate truffle-thingy. We didn't get the jellies that we were meant to, but the espresso was nice. The service was a little here and there. I had to flag someone down to order a glass of wine. We sat with our dirty dishes for far too long before being cleared, but this isn't usual for Gip's. The food and service are usually fab, but on Valentine's Day, they tried to be different and they missed the mark...

The pastry was yummy, but could have had more filling. The salad was fresh and light, and the homemade dressing was yum! The coffee was beautiful, and the art was well-done! Superior latte art! Pretty sure the barista is competing in the Toowoomba barista comp, so watch this space!

At the time of this writing, it was $18 for adults, and kids under a certain age were free. It was basically the stuff you'd find at a good hotel breakfast bar, but it was all really fresh. They also pride themselves on using locally sourced ingredients as much as possible. We have also had lunch there, and I can vouch for some seriously delicious onion rings. And their ham is out of this world. At the risk of sounding a bit older than my years, I also appreciate the comfortable chairs with nice lumbar support which make it more enjoyable to sit back and finish your coffee while overlooking the birds at the sanctuary of Lake Apex right outside the windows. There's also a walking path around the lake which is a leisurely 15 minute walk. It's a nice stroll if you're not in a hurry. (Though depending on the time of the year, it can be a bit odourous as a result of all the birds that congregate there.) For my money, it's worth the drive every now and then to get a hearty meal at a reasonable price. *Edited to add that it is located inside the Lockyer Valley Cultural Centre building.

I ordered the "Smoked Salmon Bagel", smoked Tasmanian salmon, herbed cream cheese, rocket and avocado on a toasted sunflower and rye bagel for $12.95. Definitely the best in this area and, to be honest as good as I have ever had anywhere. I am a well travelled foodie who is VERY demanding, particularly when it comes to flavour.
