All of the food is excellent and I can highly recommend the hot and sour soup (guaranteed to shift a cold), the wun tun soup, aromatic duck (the quintessential Cantonese dish but just as good here as a restaurant in town) and classics sweet and sour Cantonese style or king prawn kung po. Soups are around £2, duck is £7 and mains are around £5. They have some very reasonable set menus. The waiting are is lovely, much nicer than most takeaway places. However if you don't fancy the wait you can always call ahead or they deliver within 3 miles for £1. They also take credit cards. Closed Mondays except bank holidays when they are open 5:00pm - 10:30pm

Sunday was the launch of XP at the Mockingbird Theatre. This is a geek themed event held once a night and is a bit of a mecca for all things board game, computer game, quiz and film orientated. After consuming a smoothie for my breakfast and a salad for my lunch, I was starving hungry by 5pm. Everyone seemed to be either ordering pizza (a major no-no for me) or heading to Subway for their tea. I thought neither of these would be an option before a helpful person mentioned that Subway did salad bowls, problem solved... Or so I thought. Despite having all of the components of salad, Subway in Digbeth DON'T do salad bowls (and their staff are pretty unhelpful too). In a major grump, I left the store to see what else was on offer on the street. Right next door I came across Mother Clucker. Firstly, they scored a point for having a name that made me snigger, secondly... They couldn't have been more helpful if they tried. After a quick peruse of the menu I opted for lemon and herb chicken (which is served without skin). I asked if I could have some salad with this, after looking at me strangely for a minute - the guy said "Sure, we can do that. It'll be no extra charge". Winner. The chicken was cooked fresh for me as I waited and I requested some lettuce, onion and chillies (all I could have). I was even warned that the salad might be a bit rubbish as it's predominently meant for burgers, but I thought it was sweet that they warned me. My diet friendly feast was a budget busting £3.50. The guys that did end up going to Subway ended up pretty jealous of my dinner after all. This new kid on the block is sparkling clean, very friendly and super helpful. Will I be back? You make the wraps smaller now. For the same amount of money. £6,19 for a regular drink, fries and a wrap into a cardboard package. It used to be paper before and it used to be massive. You see,our friend (who lives in the area) is always posting pics on facebook late at night showing the delights that this place has to offer. So over time you convince yourself that not only do you need a Shirley K in your life,you actively crave one! So imagine our delight upon disvovering that it was just accross the road from our hotel for the evening...result! So festivities and alcohol out of the way we made our way staggeringly for a kebab,and we weren't dissapointed. Ange had a donner on naan with mild sauce,and I went for a chicken on naan with chili sauce. Both were really lovely,although I had eyes bigger than my belly and couldn't eat it all. Nevermind though because it made the journey home with us,and you'll be no doubt thrilled to know that it reheated really nicely! We weren't in Shirley very long,so I don't know what it has to offer (Apart from members of Morgue Orgy living there),but it has a good Kebab house,and at the end of the day that's what life is all about really : )
