Cook Out

It is my first time to Morehead, Kentucky. Absolutely beautiful place!…read moreMy son said I "needed" to try Cook Out before I left. I must tell you, there is massive hype surrounding this drive-thru only restaurant. For the college kid on a budget I totally get it. However, I was not totally on board as we rolled to a stop at one of the two drive thru lanes. It was pretty hard for me to hear and understand the person on the intercom. They have Mr Pibb but not Dr Pepper. Let me say here that Mr Pibb was a drink whose recipe was surely invented by the Soviets during the Cold War in order to create chaos an unrest in the US. I just got a coke. I ordered a "tray", with a double burger on the advice of my more worldly, athlete son. He went the distance and ordered the same, but in a special way ( I think it might have been "cookout style"?). Anyway, it came with chili and slaw... on the burger. Again, under his advisement , I ordered the hush puppies as a side, and I saw they had Cajun Fries, so I thought I would try them. My one regret is that I did not try one of the 45 shakes on the menu. I was not super hungry and I just couldn't justify buying one. The food was ready, fresh, and hot in a matter of about three minutes! A friendly efficient young lady passed it through the window to us and took our payment. I was pretty impressed at their operation as far as that went. My son's order was correct but I think they might've given me a junior burger or something? It turned out it was fine because there was quite a bit of food there. Hush puppies were in fact pretty good. The "Cajun Fries" were just crinkle cut fries with some kind of spicy, salty powder sprinkled on them after they put the fries in the styrofoam container. The tiny burger was tasty, and the burgers taste like they are flame broiled. Pretty good! Overall, the food was pretty good. My experience would've been a lot better if the intercom and order taker had been little bit better, so keep that in mind if you go here. The drive-through only business is not for me, but for college kids and people who just want to get something to eat on the way home I think it's fine. I can't recommend the shakes because I didn't try one but they all sounded really good.

One of my local (Morehead) favorites, especially in the summer. The food truly reminds me of summer…read moretime backyard cookouts (something that sadly has become more of my past than my present). I love ending summer days with a hamburger and hotdog (don't judge me). It is a great away to add a little "summer" to winter days. A "cookout" for dinner when the temps are cold is a great way to break the winter doldrums.

You usually get hot sauce with Cajun food and we had to ask for it. There was a lady that seemed to run the place sitting near us and she made zero effort to help with customers. When we were eating - she asked how it was and we said good (awkward), then she responded "I was hoping it was good, it's the first time I've ever made it" um, excuse me? The first time you've ever made it? I was so confused at how they run a restaurant and hadn't made the dishes before. It showed they had no experience in cooking the dishes. I love a hole in the wall place but this was pretty dirty. The fried pickles were ok, and my husband liked the boudin balls - but we won't be back.

Based on the season will depend on what food is available because it is Fresh! Zero leftovers period. Good luck there being any anyway because of the flavor. Service is personal. I'm talking the owner is also one of the cooks and she's always coming out to the patrons and really talks to them. Not just the welcome to our restaurant, it's come on in and she'll get you fully excited, mouth watering, can't wait to come back again all before your food has even arrived. The ambiance? You walk in those doors and you're instant family. Not just by the workers, even the customers will talk across tables joining in. I can't express enough just how much everyone really needs to experience this family owned and operated down home creole living.
