The more surprising thing is that this oversight hadn't even occurred to us until we sat down for lunch at the Bridge Cafe and saw that a couple of different breakfast plates were on option. It was not too late! I think we both went with the "Wee Yin," which was only £6 and came with an egg, meat (lorne sausage for me), bacon, a tattie scone, beans, and toast. I don't think I have a small appetite, but this was plenty. (The "Big Yin" adds additional good stuff for £2.5 more: haggis, black pudding, and mushrooms. I'd have to wait till the next morning to get some haggis and black pudding...) This was simple but hearty eating, and very satisfying at the midpoint of a drive from Skye back to the Edinburgh area. Spean Bridge is a charming little place, and this spotless cafe is colorful, has plenty of natural light, and a cheerful air to it. At one point, a couple of the young servers picked up instruments (acoustic guitar and accordion) just behind us, and I thought we were going to be subjected to acoustic jam versions of pop songs, just like those dreaded at a certain chain sandwich shop in the States. But this was pretty great, just an interlude of a couple of sprightly yet gentle instrumentals, and then they were back to their tables. Excellent spot.

So if you don't arrive early you can hang around and wait until someone leaves and then you can arrive in confidence. The selections are traditional Scottish fare and well made. My roast beef was a little tough but tasty nonetheless. My guests had the fish and chips and they really enjoyed their dishes except for the peas. However, the peas only played a supporting role on their plates. The Crofter is very popular and the atmosphere is fun. Come for a pint or a meal. Today is our final day in Fort William so we will dine elsewhere tomorrow.

It surprising that there are now three chip shops on this street and spaced not far from each other business here must be cutthroat. There is usually a specials board where you can buy a two course meal for £5.95 or in the summer £9.95 but none of the specials where fish as l expected that it would have. You can still buy good fish & chips here some of the other items on the menu l would expect have been bought in pre prepared.

I had initially thought we'd have to make a dinner out of crisps and soda from the WH Smith inside the station, as our First Class train tickets didn't include a meal, and it looked like all the restaurants inside the station were closed. But, we did a quick door check (if it opens, they're open!) at Ness & Thistle, and were happy to find the door opened. We got a table near the windows, where we could keep an eye on the departures board. There were two women working the bar that night, and one came out with menus and water. The cheese oozed, which I loved, and there was an extra zip to the sauce that spiced it up so that it was more than just a regular cheese sauce. My husband finished most of his meal, but I think he hit his "fried food threshold" about halfway through. The fish was expertly fried, and it came with chips (duh) and peas. He did finish off the fish and most of the peas but left a large pile of chips on his plate. He said it was some of the best fried fish he's had.
