Other than getting me in quickly for an appointment, there isn't much positive I can say about this office. I do not recommend them. It became clear why they had availability. I went to this office for a skin cancer diagnosis, and they stated they would only send four samples to the lab at a time. They then told me they could only remove one skin cancer per visit due to insurance reasons, which was absolutely untrue. I have a PPO and have previously had multiple skin cancers removed in a single visit. I ultimately went to UCLA, where they removed five at once without any issue. When I relayed this back to the original office, they changed their explanation from "insurance limitations" to "office policy." After removing two lesions on two separate visits, they then advised leaving the wounds open without stitches to heal on their own. Once again, this proved to be poor guidance. I am now left with two gaping wounds--see photo for one example--that are healing extremely slowly. One on my back is now four weeks out and looks essentially unchanged. This experience has been frustrating and unacceptable. I strongly suggest going elsewhere for care. read more

Was required to pay amount in full even though we have no co-pay & are billed later after insurance pays & minimizes expenses. Waited YEARS for refund that never came. Finally, called to see if/when we would ever receive refund. Check was finally printed & sent to us ONLY AFTER OUR Prodding! The front desk lady, (I think her name was Denise) she was friendly and very helpful. And then Brenda the assistant was funny friendly and extremely efficient. Then Dr. McRay came in and he was very thorough informative funny and helpful . The whole experience was top notch. You get a really good feeling being there because the staff is so accommodating and nice and the doctor is very knowledgeable and really takes time explaining things. I wanted to see Dr. McCray and I think he may had been booked longer than the scheduler thought I would want to wait-so the scheduler put me in with the PA Laura Stevenson...In the past I had had such great appointments with PA's at other doctors offices that I though that this would be no different. When you get to the office, it is a very nice office, it doesn't feel clinical...and the receptionist that checks you in could not even be nicer! When I watched her greet other people she always did it with a smile and she seemed to know details, very comforting to a person coming in for an appointment. The individual that checked me in was really nice-asked me all the questions and very friendly. So I had good hopes for this appointment. Then Ms. Stevenson comes into the office and all the good that came before were slightly washed away. Ms. Stevenson wasn't good and she wasn't bad her bedside manner was just meh., she didn't really seem knowledgeable or that friendly just very standoffish and slightly cold....all her answers were well maybe...well maybe...nothing was concrete. She didn't really seem to want to answer any of my questions and did not seem to have the answers. She gave me a prescription...but they have this mail prescription thing...but when you have a skin condition waiting 1-3 days for medicine is not what you want...she stated it was because this "specialty" pharmacy doesn't question insurance...after Ms. Stevenson left the office I asked the nurse/intake individual if there was any way that they could send the prescription to my normal pharmacy...so I asked if it was going to take up to 3 days I was concerned it could get worse (I already had to wait 2 weeks for the appointment). So the wonderful nurse got me 3 little tubes of samples. With Ms. Stevenson there seems to be no sense of urgency...and very little empathy. If you like honest business... don't go here. Dr. McCray struggles to communicate and his billing lady Linda is the biggest problem wrong with the business. We had multiple problems: My husband and I went to see Dr. McCray after changing to a PPO... our experience in office was mediocre... nothing I couldn't have gotten from my prior HMO plan ( we don't have any major skin issues as of now) , In fact we may have even gotten better service at Facey. 1.Dr. McCray failed to inform my husband of his moles to watch but quickly informed me in my appointment of what he had "told my husband to watch", NONE of which he made mention to my husband about... 2. We paid at the time of our visits what the front office told us would be our TOTAL charges. $100 each. About two months later we received in the mail a bill for $48 more for my husband but nothing more at the time owed for me. I called (because I had been to told that I had already paid my charges in full at the time of my visit) I got transferred to LINDA in billing. Linda is more than rude, abrasive, and surely not willing to work with you. She answers the phone ready to fight. After I informed her of the situation she informed me that the extra charge of $48 was for the amount of time the Dr. took seeing my husband... HOW IS THAT LEGAL?!?! If I ( or anyone) knew I was paying for time by the minute I wouldn't ask a single question God forbid I actually had something wrong with me-- how can someone get adequate care if they are charged like that?! I hung up with Linda annoyed. My Husband then called and Linda did the same thing to him... she was rude, unwilling to work with us and recognize the mistake. My husband asked if she could speak with the Doctor about it to which she finally agreed and then informed him the Doctor doesn't usually make exceptions.... GUESS who called saying that the $48 was no longer owed.... LINDA 3. I then had to inform Linda she never sent my information to my insurance ( I wanted what I paid to actually be applied to my deducible)... she said I would owe the same as my husband ($48) plus more for the freezing of a wart ( which they wanted me to come back in every two weeks until it was gone, can you say $$$$$$)... for a total of "probably" $140-- fast forward to waiting for that bill... and once again Linda was was WAY off... I only owed $92.... we didn't fight this one because it's just not WORTH IT. Linda made sure that this office will NEVER get my business again and I will tell anyone who listens or asks that this office is not the place to go. read more

I have gone to McCray Dermatology over the past ten years and have always seen Laura Stevenson, PA. I highly recommend her and she is very professional. I have had precancerous lesions treated and removed, along with a tick that formed a granuloma, cysts removed, and various other genetic skin conditions that required removal and treatment. I also see her for overall skin checkup. I have always been happy with the service I received. I am not an insurance patient, and have always paid cash, so the billing procedures are always straightforward. My family members also come to this office. read more

I went to see Dr. McCray after first having a horrific experience with Dr. Raskin. I was seen promptly by Dr. McCray and treated with respect. I told him a little about my experience with Raskin and he said he gets quite a few patients who transfer over from Raskin. I wasn't surprised. I had a mole that had been biopsied by Raskin and he said it was precancerous. Dr. McCray looked at it and said it appeared more on the side of cancerous and said it should definitely be removed. He told me he could do it that day in the office but said he works with a surgeon, Dr. Chow, who specializes in this type of thing, so I opted to come back in 2 days for the surgery. Dr. Chow was also very professional and competent. He also said it looked more like Melanoma so he explained that he was not only going to remove the mole but remove the tissue around the mole and send it all out to the lab to be biopsied. Luckily he did because it ended up being Melanoma! Had I not switched doctors, I never would have found this out. I am due to go back on Wednesday to have my stitches removed. Hopefully it will heal nicely and I will return to their office every three months to have my full body check and make sure it doesn't return. Dr. Chow personally called me to tell me I had Melanoma and he was very patient and concerned while he spoke to me. He made me feel okay about the diagnosis and calmed me down, as this is obviously alarming news. I would highly recommend Dr. McCray and Dr. Chow. They are very professional and competent doctors. I am very fortunate that my friend Alyssa suggested I see them. If you have any type of serious dermatological problem, you should see them. read more

A terribly disappointing experience. I went to McCray based off of Yelp reviews. I later found someone I knew had gone here as well and recommended them. So, off I went with high expectations. I was having something done that was not covered by insurance. I wanted to get a price so I could budget for it. I was told that the only way I could get this was to make an appointment and come in. So, I went in and was given a price of $420 for a minor surgical procedure. It was less than I had anticipated, so I made an appointment to have it done. To be absolutely sure the price was accurate, I asked not twice but three times to be sure there were no extra fees. I verified this with the office manager. The only extra was a lab fee they estimated would be about $50 from an outside company. Great. So, the day of the procedure, I call an hour before my appointment with a question. After quite some time on hold, it becomes apparent that they have no idea I am coming in for a surgical procedure. I triple check the form they provided me and indeed I have the correct date and time. The office manager comes onto the line and nonchalantly says, "we are going to put you in for Thursday of next week." Huh? I ask what is happening and she says they "changed computer systems" and some appointments fell out of the system. I am a bit put out because while this appears to be no big deal for them, I cleared my calender for the day, cancelled all appointments and am sitting at home making no money. Furthermore (as recommended on their written instructions) I have had my wife make herself available to potentially drive me home and this is costing me more money. So I explain this to them. After more time on hold, they are able to work me in several hours after my scheduled appointment. Then the office manager says something strange to me. Without the subject coming up, she suddenly asks if I was aware the cost might be a little more. She says the cost they gave me was just an estimate and it could be higher. What? I explain that this is the first time this has come up. I ask her for specifics and she says it could be as much as $200 higher. I am frustrated and explain to her that this is not what I was told before. I decide to go on in and hope for the best. So I show up, the place is empty and after waiting a while and listening to the office staff gossip and chit chat in the back I finally signal that I am there. I am brought right in and meet with Dr. Chow, my first meeting with him. He goes over everything and then a nurse comes in to numb me up and put medical drapes and what not on me. So, I am on the procedure table. I am numbed up. I am draped in medical drapes. And in comes the office manager. She says that a mistake was made and the cost of the procedure is going to be an additional $400, "is that a problem?" So, let me get this straight. I pay for an office visit to get a price for a procedure. I verify the price three times with you. You then lose my appointment. Then, you wait until I am numbed up, ready to go. Then you come in and tell me you are going to charge me almost DOUBLE what I was quoted? Yes, this is a problem. I sit up, take off the drapes and everything. I tell them I need to confer with my wife. I call my wife and get an earful from her because this was not supposed to happen as we just got hit with some other major bills. I have never in my life been treated more poorly in a doctors office or been more frustrated. Reviewing my options, if I went elsewhere it is going to take me months to find someone, get an appointment for a consultation and then get this done. The simpler way is to bite the bullet and just have it done here. I speak to the office manager and outline my experience so far. I ask if there is anything they can do with the price. She explains that when they quoted me the price for the procedure, they neglected to add in the cost to close the incision up. The office manager tells me they apologize (note: this half assed apology is the ONLY one I got from the office manager that day). I am then told "our price is $820." In other words, pay up or get out. Dr. Chow came in and overheard what was happening. He offered to cut the $400 extra down to $200 which I agreed to (what else was I going to do) and we moved forward. Dr. Chow was great. I felt nothing, he was a really nice guy. The stitches he put in were beautiful, like a machine had done them. My incision is on it's way to healing and I am confident that scaring will be minimal. In other words, the doctor was great, and I have no beef with him and I would see him again in a minute, but only not at McCray Dermatology. I am truly just astounded at the way I was treated at McCray. Maybe it had something to do with this being a non-insurance procedure, I do not know. I have told others what happened and they are just shocked. Never again. read more

I have been going to Dr. Mc Cray and his assistants since 1996. The first time I went in I had been told by the dermatologist and physician from HMO I had belonged to that a little pink bump on my right arm was benign (they did not even biopsy it). At my first visit to Dr. Mc Cray's office, Laura Stevenson took care of me. She took one look at the pink bump, told me it was skin cancer, had it biopsied immediately along with another bump on my arm; it turned out that one was a basal cell skin cancer, and the other was a squamous cell skin cancer. Laura removed them that afternoon. if I had not changed to Dr. McCray but had stayed with that HMO, it would have been a death sentence for me. Thank goodness for the Nursing Staff where i was working, for telling me to leave the HMO. read more

Very poor customer service. I went in for mole checks because my Oncologist told me to have one every six months. They did not read my chart on several occasions and even asked me "what are you here for" after I had already been in several times for this check. Most everyone I met in the office is unfriendly and I will be moving on to someone who is really concerned about my cancer not coming back. read more

I have had nothing but good experiences with McCray Dermatology over the past number of years. I've generally dealt with Dr McCray for a number of minor skin issues. He's very personable and likable. My most recent experience with the office was today. I had Mohs surgery on a Basal cell carcinoma on my neck. Denise was great at scheduling me, getting me prepped, getting my neck numbed and bandaging me after the surgery. Dr Chow was very good at explaining the procedure (my first such surgery), preforming it, and stitching me up in a essentially painless fashion. My husband went to see Dr. McCray at the recommendation from a couple of his female coworkers. One visit with Dr. McCray, his skin problem was taken care of. He has no issues with the Dr. whatsoever; it's the front office that's the problem. I read Larry M.'s write-up and we share similar experience. It's unfortunate that people will turn away from good doctors because the office is poorly managed. It's like going to a restaurant with outstanding food, but bad service just ruins your experience completely. Nobody wants to go back. There are other good restaurants and good doctors in the area. We don't have to settle. So my specific warning; you have to pay up-front in full. We have Blue Cross Blue Shield through his work; there's no copay. BCBS also manages our HSA so when they receive an invoice from a Dr office, they pay out of our HSA. We explained this to the office mgr, and that we never ever have to pay the Dr. office at the time of the visit. She said that their policy is to collect the payment at the time of the visit; no exceptions. She said that once they received a check from BCBS then she would reimburse us. So BCBS sent them a check 10 days after the visit. Long story short and after 3 phone calls, we got our money back six weeks after the visit. I would recommend Dr. McCray, if you don't mind the hassle with the front office. read more

The office is beautiful but cold. Denise one of the ladies who happened to receive my call was very abrupt and rude. I was requesting for an update if Dr. McCray was ready to give us a referral for my daughter who had a severe case of skin allergy at that time and she brushed it off by saying snootily and condescendingly that she was not part of the conversation and put me on hold for the longest time and then, let me know curtly that it was not ready and hang up. She should not be working at the reception nor answering the phone at all when she is very tactless and insolent. Denise was rude, not accommodating, and made my experience with this clinic very unpleasant. Very disrespectful! She has to be careful who she speaks with over the phone and she needs to learn phone etiquette. We will not go back to this clinic and will let friends know as well. read more

I have been to McCray Derm a few times over the years for skin checks, etc. I have always been very happy with the office experience. Laura Stevenson is who I typically see. She and the assistants have been exceptional. My last visit I had an discolored area removed for testing. After a couple of weeks, I was informed there was no problem with the tissue. The problem was with the pathology and the billing. The initial "pathology" was done by Dr McCray. Apparently, he couldn't arrive at a finding of the tissue. The tissue was then sent to USC-Keck medical center for a "second" opinion. (more like a real opinion) I was never informed this was taking place, no-one asked if my insurance would cover the opinion from USC. I received a billing for a tissue exam from Dr McCray and also received a separate billing for a tissue exam from USC. The exam at USC was out of my network. If they can't make a diagnosis or provide a service at McCray, why am I being billed for it?? If you go to McCray and have something removed, take my advice and tell them to skip the "tissue exam" there and have them send it straight to USC. I did ask the office staff why a was double charged for the pathology diagnosis, but the concern fell on deaf ears. The office should at least verify coverage if they use another facility. I was charged over $100 from McCray for nothing. read more

I met with the Physician Assistant and she gave me a lot of good information. I was given a couple of prescriptions and told to come back in two months. Just became a patient of both Laura Stevenson and Dr. McCray after being treated by another M.D. . My condition wasn't improving and Laura quickly escalated me to see Dr. McCray. I am finally seeing some improvement in my skin after almost 6 months of pain and suffering. Debbie at the front is extremely kind as are all the staff. I had a major meltdown in the office with Laura and she couldn't have been more caring, helpful and professional. I'm not 100% yet but know with this team I will be sooner than later. I have skin conditions being treated by another dermatologist but wanted to find someone closer to home now and my internist recommended Dr. McCray. There are two conditions, one of them being major that could turn into cancer and needs to be followed. I said I wanted to get a second opinion and find a specialist closer to me. Dr. McCray briefly took a look at first condition but not the second major one, told me he really specialized in Mohs, wrote me same prescription for second condition without seeing it, and said make an appointment with his assistant in a couple of months. As I was leaving this establishment I had a run in with one of the receptionists Debbie. She was completely and undeniably rude to me. While explaining (a misunderstanding that had occurred earlier) she rolled her eyes at me and became super defensive and rude and did NOT apologize for her actions after I called her out on it. I asked for someone else and the other receptionist that was there knew her stuff and was super happy and super helpful to me. I called the end of October and needed an appointment, this is where my son goes so I wanted us to keep seeing the same doctor well I was told they were not taking new patients because they wanted to make room for patients with year end insurance deductibles ( I pay cash). I stated that if I had to find another doctor I would take my sons appointments to the new doctor also but they didn't care. Heather and Brenda were rude and unprofessional Brenda even hung up while I was still talking. The care when my son was going there wasn't that great to begin with.
