Since McCarthy changed hands, I used them twice to do internal moving within my house. Both times, there was always one rude mover who would not listen to my instructions on what I needed. I told the Owner he understood the first time when it happened (or seemed to) but just recently he didn't really seem to care how I was treated by his men on the second trip. Now the owner himself has started disrespecting me. I asked if he would take a credit card and he Said no. I told him I was leaving town for a few days and would pay upon return. He agreed to that verbally on the phone then sent me a bill that I had to ask for which was a lower price and the suddenly he sends me a new bill with a higher price. Not good business at all. I will never be using this Company again. I wish I could rate this Company zero! read more

They moved us on very short notice and provided a huge & personable crew to get the job done quickly before anyone got too tired & emotional. Moving house is a draining & confusing process - so many decisions. The team kept things calm & did whatever we asked of them. Excellent service! My family has been using McCarthy Moving for years. Tom is a great guy and makes sure he has the best men for the job. The guys are all respectful, personable, strong, and meticulous. I always appreciate their attention to detail when putting items back together. Never had anything break. I hate moving more than sucking balls BUT... I have poor memory. And I get tired of places rather quickly. And I horde stuff. So if I don't run out of space to store my crap, then eventually I run out of rooms to decorate and I get bored. And I LOVE house hunting. So every 18 months or so (when the painful memory of the previous move has left me completely) I start "browsing" while trying not to get noticed by Mr. S who hates moving even more and doesn't share my need for frequent scenery changes. Eventually I let him in on my plan, we fight, i win and we move. Since moving back to the Bay Area 9 years ago, I have managed to move 5 times and Tom McCarthy and the gang have helped me through every one of those painful experiences. His team is always professional, experienced and courteous. They are easy to work with, dependable, fast and have never damaged a thing. We used McCarthy Moving 5 years ago, but the experience was so bad that it still makes me angry when thinking about it. We moved across town, and honestly, the guys worked really really hard. But when it came time to settle the bill, the head guy threw a fit that we were questioning any of the items he was charging us for. He became very aggressive and rude and nasty, there in our living room. I understand that he had worked hard and was tired, but it's not unreasonable to look closely at the bill. And frankly, a couple of the line items on there were very dubious. He then turned it around and accused us of being responsible for increasing our own bill. We paid him in full, even for the things we disagreed with, and he stormed out and drove the truck off before we could give his guys a tip. His jackassery resulted in his own guys being deprived the tips that they deserved, and that's the only part of the whole interaction that I feel bad about. Well, it's been 5 years & I've finally gotten this off my chest. Stay away from McCarthy at all costs! read more

Peter and his crew of 5 people were amazing. Really efficient, professional, and friendly. Peter even spotted a free IKEA cabinet on the street by my old house and picked it up on the way to my new apartment! Stop 1: Showed up at 8:30am at my house. They organized and packed up my entire 1 BR and random kitchen/household items. This included removing shelving, mirrors, and several other wall installments in my bedroom. Brought plenty of supplies to make sure nothing was damaged. I hadn't done ANY packing, and it would have taken me the whole day (if not more) to pack up the room. They did everything in a little over an hour. Stop 2: My storage unit. They were done with the storage unit in about 30 minutes. Items in the storage unit included: a really heavy 30-gallon fish tank, 2 mattresses, suitcases. And because I'm a pack rat, unorganized items in multiple small bags (or just lying around the unit), which they quickly consolidated into a few boxes. Stop 3: By 10:30am (just 2 hours later!) we were at my new apartment. By noon all of my things were unloaded and placed in the correct rooms. read more

Trustworthy and honest company that you can rely on to move your valuables from Location A to B. We had a pretty typical move for San Francisco residents, lots of stairs, tight corners that lead to the stairs. We had 9 guys come in pack up our 5-room house and kitchen in four hours. The next day they came back broke down our bedroom and office and headed to our new home. The crew worked hard and fast, but were very careful with our stuff. They also re-assembled all furniture that they broke down in the move, which was an added bonus!. They are a tad pricey, but definitely worth it. read more

I'd absolutely recommend these guys. It starts with Tom McCarthy. Nice guy. He hooked us up with with boxes and tape and layed out the game plan for moving out of a house we'd owned for 18 years and raised out kids in. He understood how physically and emotionally draining that can be and said we could call any time during the process if we have any questions. Moving day there was a hitch. Our 24-year old, who is autistic, had a full-on melt-down. Tom and his crew were sympathic, and flexiable, and rolled with it. In a phone conversation a couple days later, Tom asked how my son was doing. That meant a lot. During the move, a couple things that were supposed to be hauled off to the landfill, either didn't get taken, or were moved to the new place. In addition, a glass table top for our coffee table had been misplaced. No problem. Tom was right on it, tracking the table top down, and removing the other stuff. He totally followed through, even after we had paid him. read more

We hired McCarthy after reading reviews on Yelp. We are very happy with them. The owner was very responsive to our questions over the phone before we booked a time with them. Needed to store most of our belongings in our basement to make room for staging in advance of offering our house for sale. Tom's crew was excellent in every way; they arrived punctually, listened carefully, organized the job quickly, accomplished an amazing amount of work in four hours, involving taking many heavy objects down one or two sets of stairs, the one very narrow, without an item getting damaged. These movers were fantastic. We had to move furniture out of our home for a remodel and was concerned about storage and breakage. I worried needlessly. McCarthy movers were quick, reliable (showed up when promised), returned on a days notice with all my belongings intact. We had about 35 boxes left in our living room to be unpacked as our kitchen was being finished. My wife and I unpacked these boxes and put all our belongings away over a two week period. I called Tom to pick up the empty boxes and he arrived early Monday morning when promised. His team of movers were professional, friendly, and showed genuine care about our belongings. Tom thought better of it, and returned to the house personally and picked up the collapsed boxes and a large amount of paper. He was very apologetic. I generally am a do-it-yourselfer when it comes to moving (although I really am getting too old for this) but use McCarthy for difficult pieces such as a grand piano. I've used them twice now, and recommend them highly. Friendly, on-time (a huge issue as far as I'm concerned), very good service, and in my opinion fair priced. After this latest move I intend to use them for the whole job next time (I'm kicking myself for not using them for the whole job this time). I can't recommend McCarthy Moving highly enough. Tom was very responsive with scheduling the crews. He was even able to reschedule at the last minute when we had to switch our moving day. The guys did a great job packing up all of our stuff (we were really disorganized!) and then getting it all in place at our new house. They even made sure that we had felt pads on the bottoms of all of our furniture so that our new wood floors wouldn't get scratched up. The really worked! read more

Tom and his guys handled our move two months ago, and I've been looking forward to getting on Yelp to write a review for them ever since. They did a fantastic job. They worked quickly and efficiently, but they also took great care with our belongings. There are other movers on here with outstanding reviews, and we got quotes from two of them. I'm confident both would have done the job well, and it's possible they would have been slightly less expensive. The offered nowhere near the level of professionalism and service that Tom did, though. We moved to a fairly steep hill where parking was going to be tricky. One outfit advised not worrying about a permit. A ticket is cheaper, they said, and they even offered to cover the cost of the first one if it came to that. The second pointed us where we could get a permit and said they were fine with or without one. Fair enough on both counts, and I appreciated their honesty. I liked Tom's approach better, though. The other guys were working from their offices and scheduling dozens of moves. I'm not sure how often they get out to their job sites. Tom knew exactly the block we were moving to and could picture the parking problems a large truck would cause. He said we ought to get a permit: "The neighbors will appreciate it, and it's just the right thing to do." Well put. He picked the permit up for us at cost, on moving day the signs were out to let people know, and everything went without a hitch. The other two outfits were each going to provide us with a truck and three guys. Tom sent a crew that ranged from six to nine guys, as needed, on the day of the move. He also had an extra truck arrive at just the right time to absorb some of our larger items. Tom's rates, broken out by the hour, were marginally higher than the rates of the other two highly recommended outfits we called. But his approach of sending as many guys as the job needed was better suited to the size of our move. They finished in just under six hours, where the other two outfits would have been at it all day and into the evening. I also appreciated that when we'd gotten unpacked and had stacks of packing paper and broken down boxes to deal with, all it took was a quick call to Tom, and he arrived the next morning to pick up the supplies. Like I said at the start, there are lots of highly regarded movers in the city, and you'd probably be happy with many of them. But if we ever move again, I am definitely going to call Tom, and I'm going to be telling all my friends about him, too. read more

I worked with Tom, and right off the bat I knew he was the right guy to do our move. We had to move half of our home out to stage the house. It was a daunting process given how quickly everything needed to happen but Tom put me at ease and explained the whole process. Unlike other moving companies who quickly eyed the house and handed me a quote, Tom spent time with me and answered questions and even gave me advice. His quote was right in the ballpark of other companies. Moving day went without any issues. He had a full team and they worked carefully but quickly to move big items, box up fragile items, and point out any items that already had damage. My items are still in storage as we await our big move day, but I've had to have items brought to the house out of storage and Tom has been very helpful and responsive. I am very happy with this experience, and hope only to have a similar experience with our cross-country move. read more
