The running average for used merchandise that was labeled was around 60% of list price of current versions of the same thing. Many of the items were not priced and I found an older gentleman who seemed to be in charge who priced a few things in which I was interested. I found a used pair of hand drums that were missing some parts and had a broken head. He offered the pair for $150 and said that that would include tax since I was paying with cash. When we got to the counter, he changed the price to $200 plus tax. Hear me clearly folks--Full disclosure here: I own a music store in a different county. I was interested in the hand drums for me personally just as a normal guy off of the street. I am in no way bashing this place nor this guy, as maybe he was just having a bad day or some troubles with the memory banks. I am just simply offering this advice: please be careful that when you shop here a) you know the value of what you are buying and b) the management honors his word and sticks to his commitments.

He deserves 10 stars, as does his store. The store itself has everything and then some. It is a great store for drums, or guitars, and don't forget it has instrument cords and guitar strings galore. It has lots of small percussion devices and I have bought a few. I love the fact that they are open late and open on Sundays.

The shop features Treehouse drum kits, made locally in Kansas. Supersonic also carries a variety of percussive instruments, cymbals, heads, hardware, and sticks. Every month, the store has some deal going on, so it's always good to call ahead of time and see what they have for sale. They had a sale on hand drums one time, and I got some nice CP bongos made in India along with a burlap tote and adjuster tool for around $20, when they were originally over $60. Supersonic also has some good quality hardware in their used pile that I have purchased on several occasions, for a fraction of their original prices--Pearl cymbal mute for $10, Gibraltar tom mount clamp for $20, normally $40, as well as an LP short bongo stand for about $30 (these can be pricey). Even larger cities as you move eastward into Johnson County don't have a drum/percussion store! Granted, Supersonic doesn't carry the amount of inventory (I was looking for a wrap-around foot shaker and foot tambourine at one point, and no luck) that a place like Explorers Percussion in Kansas City would, but for the size of the store, this gem does a pretty decent job. One night, I was needing a filtered China crash for my kit that they unfortunately didn't carry. To my surprise, the employee took down my info and assured me they'd call when one turned up in their inventory. Thumbs up for helping the customer out! Some of their brand-new items may cost slightly higher than what you may find elsewhere (read: online), but just do your homework and you might be able to negotiate on the used items. Being a drummer/percussionist, this is hands down my favorite store in Lawrence.

When I called to…read moreinquire about teachers, I communicated that our requirements are stringent: my son is 6 yrs old, and while he likes piano, he doesn't looove piano, so the lessons have to be fun and engaging to encourage his progress. He's had 1.5 years piano instruction, and he doesn't respond well to some of the "too basic" piano book courses we had temporarily explored with a couple past teachers, so it's a challenge to level him up with material and technique that is age appropriate and fun enough but not too basic, nor too complex. And we had limited time availabilty as our schedules are maxed... It's such a blessing that the receptionist recommended Ms. Emily Shelp! Ms. Emily is well qualified; she possesses a Bachelor of Music in Piano Pedagogy from Bob Jones University and has been playing since she was 7 yrs old. Her bio is coming soon to the Shining Light Music teacher page. Best of all, she strikes the right notes - I couldn't resist the pun! - in working on my son's technique and making it fun. She motivates him with weekly fun point-competitions (to earn country stickers in his passport, medals, trophy, etc.) which has resulted in him reminding me that he has to memorize a song for the next lesson..cuz he wants the points! (whoo hoo, he's no longer resistant to practicing!!!!) I feel that she is the right piano teacher for his current level and needs; she employs a cheerful and focused Kindergarten/First Grade encouraging teaching style to keep all the lessons fun and on track, she's able to motivate and consistently award with positive reinforcement, able to redirect him when he gets silly (after all he's been in school all day, then straight to his lesson!) and I appreciate how she is able to teach finer technique in a way that he understands. She would be great for both beginner and advanced students.

HORRIBLE customer service! It was the worst experience I've ever had at any music shop I've ever…read morebeen too out of the 50+ stores I've been to. My fiancé pulled a guitar down she was really wanting to buy. It was only $550 for a pretty nice acoustic. She's a beginner so she asked my to try it out for her. I played a chord or two and noticed it was out of tune a little. I fixed the g string which was out just a little. I then played for a few seconds and then tried tuning it to drop d. Before I could even play a chord in drop d the owner said to me "hey, will you please keep it in standard tuning" I said "yea sure, why is that?" His reply was "I put a lot of time into setting it up" ... I then said "ok I get that, if I tune it back from drop d to standard when I put it back on the wall is that ok?" He said "NO" I asked politely "why?" He said "because I said so, I just told you!" ... This is completely NOT logical. Tuning a guitar to drop d won't mess anything up. It's one string being tuned down 1 step and that's it. This is the WORST customer service attitude. As you can understand his attitude towards me wanting to actually try the guitar and play it turned us off to buying anything from him ever. So I tuned it back and we left. HORRIBLE experience there. Will never go back!!

The staff has helped me out enormously…read morepicking out the best things that would fit the kit they sold me, and have been very patient and understanding with my indecisiveness. The used cymbals they offer are all quality, they really know their stuff. I'll only ever shop here for anything drum related going forward, but they have nice amps and other instruments as well. I got an amazing kit and completed it with one of their snares they make in house(treehouse) and couldn't be happier. This is THE music place for NE Kansas.

They always seem out of the commonly needed…read moreitems too often- for commons items we need for our Alto Sax, viola, cello, english horn, french horn, and guitars... We used to take lessons when they were in their older building and had to go elsewhere because my son and everything he brought into the building would leave STINKING of cleaner fumes- it was overwhelming ! Also, they really need to do a better job supporting the local school as they NEVER give support to or sponsor anything- they need to actually compete with Meyer already! It is sad that they are willing to take money from the students and families but never seem willing to give back to the very community that the business exists in.
