Sadly my Mother died in a matter of weeks of becoming ill with Covid-19. Once my Mother's death was near I reached out to David Griffin to see what type of arrangements were being held at this strange time, since everything was shut down. David was so comforting to talk with and understanding of our situation (which also included my parents pre-arranging & paying for their funeral ahead of time at a different firm). David assured me he would make every accommodation he could to honor what was done with the other firm. About a week later my mother passed peacefully in her sleep. We called Griffin Funeral Home early in the morning to make arrangements to bring my mother into their care. The person who answered the phone was extremely pleasant and transferred us to Larry Griffin. Larry assured us Mom would be brought into their care within an hour. We made arrangements with Mary Bartlett over the phone later in the day and scheduled a time to come in and finalize things on Monday. Mary was exceedingly kind, compassionate and helpful during our meeting. We scheduled the Funeral for Friday Morning with my mother being buried after. My Mother looked beautiful. The Funeral Home was spotlessly clean and comfortable. The Staff all kind and comforting. Larry Griffin handled our service on Friday and was very personable and professional, David Griffin made a special trip to come by and greet us, Mary Bartlett did an amazing job coordinating the service and details and Barbara in the office helped answer mine and my father's many questions. When his belongings were returned to us the wedding band and watch were missing. We have tried for two months to find the wedding band and have no resolution to this problem. A Police report has been filed. I do not know if anyone else has had this problem, but just be cautious with your loved one and their belongings.

After the nighttime lantern tour, we decided to come back during the day to see the place a little better. We could not have picked a more gorgeous day to see the fall colors against the blue sky, and we were able to see many of the thoughtful and beautiful monuments that were left to family members and loved ones as we meandered through the walkways. Rich with local history (which we learned about on the lantern tour, and could appreciate even more so in the daytime), we saw others enjoying the setting as well, as more than a few power walkers passed us on our afternoon stroll. Whether you visit for the nighttime tour, or just want to take a closer glimpse at an Ypsi local gem, Highland Cemetery is a place that you just might add to your list of local favorites as well!

There weren't any maps or coordinates to her grave site that were readily available, so I called the office. Though I would be arriving after the office closed, the staff printed up thorough maps and information to help guide me to her resting place. I got three maps from them and a list of the family members from her family who were buried there. What could have been like searching for a needle in a haystack was an absolute breeze, thanks to their help. They left the information in a little envelope taped to the door with my name on it. So easy to work with. I also want to add that the grounds are just beautiful. You can tell that this peaceful place has quite the history. If I had more time there, I would definitely have taken a nice walk through the grounds. Such a lovely and calming place.

Although it was late a night they made the arrangements to do so. Then, mom and I met with Larry the next day to begin the planning process. He asked us questions to understand our needs and walked us through several different options, including options for flowers, cards, guest book, military honors, selecting a minister, etc. He also explained they would order the death certificates for us and notify social security. He made the process easy to understand and with transparency regarding all costs. His staff was very helpful too. A few days later I called and asked about photo boards and the woman I spoke with told me I could come by and pick some up, along with a bag of pins, to take home. I took them home and made up a few boards of photos to show during the service. On the day of the funeral I went in a little early to drop off the photo boards. My neighbors also dropped off some food and beverages and a cooler with ice in the lower level sitting area. Matt was very helpful during the service as were other women who worked there. Larry checked in as well. During the service we had more people than anticipated and they quickly arranged more chairs. We also had the option to use the chapel for the service but decided to stay in the room up front. We had a lovely service for my dad and we thought that Pastor Drex did a really nice job. Because we were leaving the funeral home and going directly to dinner, they told me I could leave everything and come back the next day to pick everything up, which I did. Matt helped me load all the flowers in my car and he had everything ready to go for me including the flag, death certificates, all of the photos (they took down the photo boards for me), the guest book, extra memorial cards, and my dad's ashes. We were really pleased with the care and consideration of the entire team. They helped take a lot of stress out of the arrangements for us during a difficult time.
