Excellent, personalized service, very flexible, on time, and most importantly John and his crew did an amazing job on painting the exterior of our entire house. Highly recommend McAteer painting! read more

John McAteer is the best painting company. Very honest man. He tells you what is wrong and suggests what is the solution. For example he said the person who painted the house before did not use primer. John said that if he just paints over the old paint without removing it the new paint will bubble up. He said the stucco has cracks and he put elastomeric paint to seal the stucco, next the Primer then the paint. The painters that work for John have knowledge of how to paint sand calk power wash. John has over 30 years and knowledge of painting. His team is very clean and organized. I would recommend his painting company for all your painting needs. Plus he listens to his customers. Very happy for the job well done. read more

I contacted John last summer to obtain an estimate on exterior painting. I had recently had my roof repaired as the moisture caused issues on the existing paint. This job was completed on time, the work was excellent and everything was cleaned up afterwards. More recently, he repainted the interior of my home since I had extensive insulation done on the walls. His team did a terrific job, especially in the bathroom in which the paint was showing its wear due to moisture and sun exposure. In all instances, the estimates provided were fair and he does reach out to ensure the project details are correct. Thank you for your work and looking forward to doing business in the future. read more

John McAteer's company just painted my house in the Sunset. They were the best painters I have ever had. They paid attention to every detail throughout the process. His workers--Matius, Evan, and James were superb. John came every day to inspect the work and oversee the job. The work was completed early, and everything was clean when they left. My family has a long history of painters--including my grandfather who created the orange paint for the Golden Gate Bridge when it was built. Consequently, I might be more critical than most people. I have nothing except praise and compliments for McAteer painting. Thank you! read more

We found McAteer after a Yelp search of local painters. John responded to our request and arrived on time for a quote for painting the exterior of my in-law's house in the Sunset. We decided to go with John because 1) honestly, we liked John's demeanor and how he seemed extremely experienced, easy to work with, and professional, 2) his quote detailed all the steps and processes included, which was more extensive compared to other quotes we received, 3) his price wasn't the cheapest but very reasonable (now we've seen the quality of his team's work, it's well worth it!) His team is professional, detail-oriented, and organized. John also provided his knowledge and referrals for woodwork and stucco repairs based on our need. I've learned from John how important it is to prep and clean the surfaces before primer and paint is applied - more than half of the time spent on a job was scraping, patching, sanding, and power washing! Throughout the project, John was super responsive checking in on the progress and answered our questions every morning. We were super impressed with the quality of work his team has delivered and how clean/neat they left their job site at the end of each day. It really shows the professionalism diligence they put into their work. We ended up hiring John's team for painting the exterior of our own house a few months later and are super happy with the result. Will go back to John for future painting projects for sure! read more

If you're looking for a good quality paint job and a decent company to work with then I highly recommend McAteer painting. John is very knowledgeable, thorough, doesn't over charge and has the highest work ethic you can ask for. His crew is great, they were prompt with their communication and followed up. This team did a spectacular job with the exterior painting of our home. We're super happy with how things turned out. Know that John will not compromise on the quality of his work and will provide sound guidance should any unexpected additions to his project arise. We had to redo the stucco partially since the last paint job seemed to have been a quick fix for sale. This added to our project cost, we worked with a referral that John provided. Overall the home now looks clean and well painted. Thanks to John and his team. read more

John McAteer and his crew did a wonderful paint job on our Sunset house. John is easy to work with, communicates well in a timely way, and assisted with color selection and other decisions related to the job. The crew was on time every day and tidied up every evening. The price was reasonable and the quality of the work was exceptional. Couldn't be happier! read more

I feel very fortunate to have been introduced to John McAteer Painting. John and his team were great to work with, from scheduling a time to review the scope, to quickly providing a bid via email. John and his crew are extremely responsive, thoughtful and detail oriented, professional, and reasonably priced. We had them paint the exterior of our house this year. John helped to find a carpenter to fix the front exterior boards and coordinated the painting to finish the job on schedule. I would highly recommend him. read more

John and his team did a fantastic job painting the exterior of my San Francisco Sunset home. Quote was reasonable + included high quality Ben Moore lines, scheduling was simple and the crew came on time everyday for the 3 day job. During the prep, they spotted some dry rot damage and was able to fix it themselves as well. read more

I highly recommend McAteer Painting. We contacted John McAteer to paint the exterior of our house at the end of 2011. His bid was thorough and very reasonable compared to other bids we received. John was very responsive to all our questions and concerns and helped us pick colors. He never failed to do what he said he would do. His crew were a delight (really nice people) who worked efficiently and cleaned up well afterwards. John was also able to quickly bring in additional people including a skilled carpenter when it was found that we needed some woodwork replaced and repaired. It was a real pleasure working with John and his crew. We are very pleased with the quality result they achieved and can recommend them unreservedly. read more

John McAteer and his talented crew painted the exterior of my San Francisco four story home. The paint job was exquisite. John was very patient and helpful as I chose a new color scheme for the house. The job started precisely when he said it would. The prep work turned out to be quite extensive, taking one week to complete. The painting was neat and precise. Not a drop of paint spilled on the ground or cement. Multiple neighbors have complimented me on the beauty of the paint job. In short, I am thrilled with John McAteer's work. I have already recommended him to two of my friends -- one in Presidio Heights and the other in Pacific Heights. John is a classy gentleman with whom it was a pleasure to do business. I will have him back during the rainy season to paint the interior. read more

On Kevin McLaughlin's (McLaughlin Windows) recommendation, we asked John McAteer for an estimate to paint our eleven newly-installed double-hung windows, the surrounding trim, a bedroom, and front hall. He gave us a very reasonable price and an expedited start date when we told him we needed it done pretty immediately. John and his crew were very professional, punctual, polite, tidy, and skilled. Best of all, everything looks absolutely fantastic. We hadn't planned to paint anything else, but after they'd finished we decided that the rest of the place looked dull when compared to our new green walls and warm gray entry, so we're going to have them back to paint the rest of the interior ASAP. Can't recommend McAteer Painting enough. Wish we'd known about them when we painted the exterior of our house last year! read more

John came highly recommended and now I understand why. He was prompt in bidding my job to repaint the house exterior. He also showed up every day prepared and on time on consecutive days until the job was completed. John was patient and helpful with colors, and unruffled when I decided to change colors after he'd already painted. The paint job was excellent. I highly recommend McAteer Painting. read more

We have had painting over the last 18 years done with John McAteer. Our 1910 home has been painted both in the interior and outdoor. There is allot of attention to detail to keep the integrity of the original style of our home. We have found this company professional and trustworthy. The work was done very well on all occasion's. We would highly recommend this business. read more

We found John through our recommended supplier list through our HOA. John and his team recently painted our 1 bedroom condo. He was efficient, high-quality, and well-priced. We pretty much knew what we wanted but John was able to offer some good suggestions as well. He was able to deliver on time, on budget, and with excellent communication. When his team ran into an issue which required a bit more work, he called us immediately and gave us options, we really appreciated this. John was also able to comply with our exacting HOA standards for insurance, working hours, etc. without issue. read more

John and his crew just finished painting my home. Several of my neighbors have used them in the past (and are still happy with the job he did.) His estimate was reasonable, his crew was always punctual and hard-working; also I was grateful that they always wore masks during these Covid times. I can highly recommend them. read more

Based on 3 factors - his Yelp reviews, his attractive website and the fact that he is in my neighborhood (the Sunset) - I invited John to bid on my exterior paint job and interior window frame staining. His bid was very competitive and I liked him, so I gave him the job. He was very good to work with throughout the project. Unexpected developments did not faze him, his pricing remained reasonable, and he and his team took the time to make sure they did a good job. Do not hesitate - put McAteer Painting on your short list! read more

We used John and his team a couple of times to paint the exterior of our home. They're honest hardworking people and did a fantastic job for us. They show up on time, pay attention to detail, are respectful and get the job done on budget and in a timely manner. We highly recommend them! read more

Like another person here I got John's info from Kevin McLaughlin. My friend and I own a three-story TIC and the upper part of the side window well and back of the house needed work. Both areas get the brunt of sun/wind/rain and were peeling and we wanted to patch the stucco in the back and waterproof it. John, Javier, and Hector worked hard to get the job done in a timely manner and the place looks great! Great job, on time, good price. What more can you ask for?! I'd recommend these guys without reservation. read more

It's like having a new house. It had been more than 10 years since the exterior of our Victorian cottage had been painted, so we warned John that he would have to do a lot of work before they could start. He assured us that it would be no problem. As suspected, every day there was a new piece of flashing or trim to replace, a handrail to cut and replace, etc. He had to make multiple trips to ironmongers and Home Depot. But he and his crew remained cheerful, professional, efficient and worked hard to get the house ready. All that prep work and such a small increase in the estimate. The house looks great, water-tight, shiny and new. We are just thrilled with the results. I would absolutely recommend McAteer Painting for any job, large or small. read more

McAteer Painting and John McAteer are great. They have worked for us many times for over a decade on 2 large houses and done many projects. Estimates are honest and McAteer hits the price. John McAteer is very thoughtful about what is necessary vs worthwhile, timeframes, and always found ways to fix problems efficiently. The McAteer crew has been very careful with our house and never broken anything. John McAteer is very careful to have you do a walk around with tape for any touch-ups and has always been happy to come back when we've made a mistake about a paint line for instance. One thing we really appreciate about John is that he will advise thoughtfully about where to spend time/money on getting super careful results versus just painting something -- this is subtle and you need to pay attention/ask. John and his crew are flexible to work with in terms of scheduling and will also work Sat & Sun to push through a project when schedule drifts from weather or you want/think necessary for family reasons. John is always in touch about progress, always answers the phone, and is on the job site everyday. The crew is wonderful and we've always been happy to leave them keys and garage codes. Better yet your dog won't get lost. We would recommend McAteer Painting without qualification for any size painting projects - they/he do a very good job and is very cost efficient. read more

We just finished a partial interior/partial exterior paint job with McAteer Painting. The estimate was fair. What I like more was the efficiency of his work. He was able to fit us in between projects and get the job done quickly. We have major road construction going on outside and he took it in stride. There was no mess or disruption. The paint job looks great. Highly recommend! read more

I can't say enough great things about John and his team; they were punctual, efficient, pleasant, and did a wonderful job painting and cleaning up after themselves every night and after the job was complete. They completed all the prep and painting of my Sunset house within 4 days. John also offered advice on ways to reduce the cost of the project, like buying new fixtures for an old garage gate and repainting it rather than replacing it, and also offered advice on color schemes, etc - and the results are great. I look forward to working with John and his team on all my future painting projects; their prices are very competitive and their work superb. read more

I thought I had posted a five star review two years ago but must have forgot. My house stills looks as great as when McAteer Painting painted my house two years ago! Definitely highly recommend. Excellent job on my house that was badly in need of painting exterior. read more

I'm very pleased to write this enthusiastic review of John McAteer and McAteer Painting. Painting the rear of our house was a BIG DEAL. There's a lot of surface area, the air out here in the Avenues is damp, and it was obvious from bubbling that the prior owner had done a cut-rate job. Everything about John was first-rate. He was a bit pricier than another contractor we considered, but we got so much for that differential. John takes tremendous pride in his work, and you could tell that he is allergic to cutting corners (figuratively only; he does in fact have a carpenter on his team in the event your wood needs a little surgery). Surface prep is essential to a good paint job, of course, and John and his team spent a great deal of time meticulously prepping the surface for the paint. He put on two coats in two colors, and the finished job looks fantastic. I have to reserve a tiny bit of judgment because we haven't had a truly rainy season since the job was done, but the service was awesome. The crew were friendly and easy to deal with, they took care of our property, and they left the place nice and clean. Also, John cheerfully accommodated a change order with a reasonable and minimal price increase. I consider the minor price differential for this job to have been a money-saving investment in the long run, because I am confident that this paint job will hold up for a long time. We are highly satisfied! read more

I highly recommend McAteer Painting. John McAteer is honest, efficient and thoughtful. Both he and his staff were a pleasure to communicate with. His staff has been with him for a long time and this speaks to his approach as a boss. I did get multiple bids and I loved the honesty shown in the estimate, the detailed scope of work, and the conveniently provided references with contact info. I had to make an emergency trip overseas which conflicted with his start date and he was able to compromise on facilitating logistics around this. He helped with the color/vendor selection, gave good advice, and was available everyday to check on progress and have any discussions. He completed the work within the projected time. He provided good follow-up on spots we missed during the initial post-completion inspection. The paintwork is great. (We checked on a reference's home a year after the job, and it held up beautifully through the previous rough winter.) read more
