The trails would be very buggy in the spring and summer and I'd recommend bug spray for sure. I loved the different trails and how they went through different types of forest land. The pond was very nice and relaxing and a lot of care went into the overall design of this place. There is a large number of benches and places to rest and enjoy the serenity of nature. Nice visit, I'd come again if I was in the area!

Crittenden Park was 'developed' partly to prevent any development from occurring in this area…read more Having grown up on Crittenden Road in the 1960's/70's, much of the land in this area is lowland and 'swamp' like in spots, thus preventing any reasonable other use for the land. For years, this area was my 'playground'. My friends, siblings and I spent a lot of time walking all over this area along Crittenden Road which was a wilderness close to civilization. Appreciate this area for what it is: free open space for people to play, or to hike in the area and appreciate the extensive wildlife that calls this area 'home'. Beautiful, quiet, and little evidence of human occupancy. A nice reprieve in this overdeveloped world of ours.

It is easy to miss from every entrance if you aren't careful. I've been exercising and walking the dog at Cobb's Hill for ~6 years and just this winter break finally made the walk down/up into the Grove. Accessible from Nunda Blvd OR the Reservoir, you can hike around the forest area and eventually be lead up to a gorgeous display of public water tower art. There are gorgeous murals here. Some of Rochester's top artists have left their mark and you can walk around both towers to see what pieces speak to you most. There were families exploring the day I was here, even though it was a chilly day. Don't wait many years to explore this part of the park like I did. Get over there and breathe in some fresh air!

But it's right next to the canal trail, so that makes up for the blip! It has THREE playgrounds. They're all fun and different. The biggest (and best, I'd dare to say) has a "jungle theme", giant playable instruments, and a splash pad. Picnics tables are strewn about all over the place, it has a little pond, a gazebo, baseball diamonds (I counted at least four), a place to play soccer, and ice hockey too, when it's in season, and disc golf! WOW! And it's all in impeccable shape. I definitely plan to come here in the future when the splash pad is actually up and running (I hear they turn the water on around Memorial Day)! Such a fantastic place to come and have a picnic, hang out while the kids play, or relax under a tree with a blanket and a book. Don't miss checking this one out!

This is officially known as First Responders Park, in the town of Gates. Though it's been around awhile, it's a little-known park to anybody outside the EMS, police or fire department community. Except for residents that are nuts about soccer. And that's where I come in. My cousin is an Olympic gold medalist (in soccer) and Daughter loves soccer, too. Chances are very good if there is a decent soccer field with in 50 miles, I know about it. This soccer field's a good one. It's a huge, well-maintained, grassy area, with over a dozen soccer nets. The soccer field is edged with trees, and at the one end of the field is a little bridge and a hiking path that disappears into the beautiful woods surrounding the field. Diagonally across from the bridge, on the other side of the spacious parking lot, is a nice playground for the kids. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, it's taped off. Hopefully though, the kiddos can come play here soon. One thing here that kind of puts a damper on picnicking, is there is only one grill for community use. Unfortunately, it's very close to the playground. Now I'm a mom, so my maternal instinct is kicking in and I'm thinking it's way too close to the playground, and it's far from the picnic benches on the one side of the (maintenance?) building. Though I've never seen anyone that could even remotely be considered a shady character, I would keep an extra close eye on the Wee Ones, especially if someone was using the grill. Besides, even they weren't, you never know if the grill is still hot (gosh, there's that maternal instinct again!). Now unless the town of Gates is planning to install more, there's only two picnic benches on the one side of the building that has a patio. Otherwise, I'd suggest bringing a blanket, laying it on the ground and having your picnic while the kiddos play. Lack of a picnic table never killed anyone. Another suggestion? Don't wear a fragrance. Wear sunscreen and insect repellent. I wasn't planning on stopping here, so I didn't think about it till I had several large bees chase me. But I was wearing eau de parfum as usual. And it was gardenia. Suffice to say I spent a fair amount of time in the car with the windows rolled up. And I didn't even get a chance to go for a hike, because I was too busy cowering in my car. I'm not allergic to bees, but these were big bumblers, and I wasn't taking chances. Bottom line: bring a blanket, charcoal, lighter fluid, a picnic, soccer ball &/or frisbee, wear sunscreen and insect repellent, and be prepared to have some family fun.

Thousands of wild flowers bloom every spring. The flower is associated with kindness and everlasting love, among other symbols. I saw some bird watchers around with their binoculars, enjoying the different species of birds. Children were playing in the playgrounds; young people were playing pickleball, basketball, and tennis on a fine spring afternoon in the good weather, something rare in Western NY State.
