Important intermodal station for making connections, near the Kennedy historic site, Coolidge Corner Theater, and Brookline Books.

During my visit to Boston almost 10 years ago, Ruggles was one of the first station that I had experienced as a train station in the Boston area (outside of the green line experience). I've been back occasionally over the years. It serves both the T (subway) and commuter rails. I don't have any tips or advice or strong feelings towards it, since I don't frequent this station. I just want to say for how much Boston rains (yes, Boston rains more than Seattle), make sure you are prepared because much of the platform can be uncovered. Oh, and the commuter rail doesn't always come directly on the said inbound/outbound platform. So make sure you double check with the conductor before you get onboard, but also be prepared that the conductor may mock your question and not answer your question. I'm back to Ruggles (though it's actually my first time here, thank you Yelp hamsters) because it was quicker to catch a commuter rail from here than try and get to South Station. Easy transfer from the Orange line to the commuter rail with an up escalator, at least. Very little seating on the platform there. And that became important since my train was an extra 15 minutes late. There are no visual or audible announcements on the commuter rail platform, but fortunately the train conductors do a loud announcement as their train starts boarding. They'll also answer polite "Does this train go to..?" questions. Tickets for both T and commuter rail are purchased on the ticketing platform which is at the same level as the street. There is an elevator for both MBTA and CR platforms. The usual ticketing turnstiles for the T side, which is parallel to the commuter rail. read more

Ruggles isn't too bad for a MBTA station. It's pretty much on the Northeastern University campus, so it's safe before dark. In rush hour, when I'm there, there are plenty of people. The orange line, commuter rail, and buses all stop here. I appreciate that the waiting area for the buses is covered so you don't get soaked in inclement weather. There's a Dunkin Donuts for your java fix and a sub shop if you need lunch. read more

This was my station. As in, this was the closest next door station to the hotel where I was staying so I used this station quite a bit to get around. I liked that it is only one station from Park where you can transfer to the Red lines and the Blue and Green lines go through here. It was so convenient to get here on any Green line at all times since I knew it would stop at Gov Center. I though for a subway stop it was decently clean and easy to use. The gates are not broken and the elevator / stairs were convenient for entry and exit. read more

Bus, Commuter Rail, Orange Line... Not a bad mix, you can get almost anywhere from here.... Services, two atms, and a tiny quickie mart, a tiny stand to get hot dogs and jamacian beef patties, and a dunkies. So many travellers and only a dunkies. MBTA... you can do better. To the north is Northeastern and the MFA. To the south... well just don't go south, well unless you come packing heat. Nuff said. read more

I am going to try to write a review keeping in mind that this is a train station, and not write a review of the MBTA. For instance, it would be nice if you could connect to the red line here, or the blue line at Park, but this is an MBTA question, not Govt. Center station. Especially if you are from the surrounding area, than you will be aware that the station was closed for two years. It was completed on schedule, and is now open. This review is of the renovated station considering the station it once was. At the platform level (blue, green, and in between), they added a much cleaner design. The yellow-y walls and green/white support piers are now all gray (might be painted in future, probably not). Design might be cleaner, but it is not a whole lot sleeker. I do like the Scollay Under signs being features much more. Addition of elevator and a wider escalator is a large plus, as it reduces congestion there. Where the reconstruction really shines is up above. The once small, dreary, crowded entrance is now modern, sleek, and much larger and more open. The only thing I don't understand (and don't like) is why there is an elevator from after the gates to the green line, but then a separate elevator down to blue line... but I am not engineer or architect. Someone made a point about trains B, C, D and E of the green line not all going all the way to Lechmere. While I agree this is a nuisance, I do understand where it comes from, for there are only so many trains that can be turned around at any given time. In conclusion, while I am happier with the station being like this, I expected it to look more modern in the track areas. All it got from my perspective was new escalators, elevators, and a paint job. Above ground is great though. read more

When you get to the middle of the station, you notice that there is a quickee mart of sorts, Bank of America ATM, and a Dunkin Donuts. The subway platform for outbound and inbound are downstairs and one and the same. For an average Orange Line station, it's moderately clean for the most part. The bus stations are located downstairs and on the same level as the ATM inside the station. If you had to choose between getting anywhere around the city from NEU, you would choose Ruggles 99% of the time over the NEU stop. read more

Good bye Government Center MBTA Station. (As of March 22, 2014, this station is going on a long vacation.) Enjoy your two year hiatus. Your closure is an annoyance, especially for that well-used Blue Line connection to the airport. (Yes, I will be glad to see that elevator you are putting in, as it is badly needed.) Let's hope that your cosmetic updates include a good scrubbing, a new ventilation system, better signage and more turnstiles. Let's hope that you apply some sort of industrial grease to the tracks so that the torturous screeching sounds are somewhat diminished. Let's hope your updates influence the rest of the immediate area by the entrance which seems cold and barren all year long. Let's hope your overhaul cheers up the people working here, and they figure out that smiling is easy and being helpful is not too difficult, either. See ya. I love writing yelp reviews for things that nobody will ever, ever read. Hmmmm should I get off this tee stop? Let me check how many stars it has on yelp, 2? NOPE. This was my T stop for a number of years and a fun fact for you, when Boston has bad weather, it worse in Government Center some how. By far the most screeching sounds in any one indoor place ever. Not one star just because like the horrible late night food spot you go to after the bar, after you graduate and move away from Boston everything seems much better when you remember it. read more

One of the most accessible T stops around in Boston. It drops you in the heart of the city! City Hall Plaza, Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market and local bars and shops are steps away! Yeah there's only a few turnstiles, and people think it's crappy, but it works. We can't all sit on gold thrones when we ride the T. Accept it for what it is - an accessible T station in the middle of the city. read more

It's a hot mess over here. If you're confused, you won't be soon. Just don't hover at the doors if you're not getting on or off the particular train that's there, k thanks. You go down, to the left is towards North Station/Lechmere, then you look straight where masses of people are just chillin out and wait for your line to come. Pay attention though, don't stand in the way like the people.. well you'll see them. Sometimes the T lets you off here because it's going to loop back around and pick people up and go back the other way, so they drop you and you have to wait for a NS train, oh well.. pay attention to that if you're going this direction. Often there are promotions going on and samples being given out, which is fun because who doesn't like free stuff? The elevator is small, stand to the right...... or take the stairs.. or if you're slow don't take the stairs and block the other people who want to get the heck out of there's way. Then you go downstairs again and there's the blue line, a bit messy but oh how I miss traveling on the blue line (for one reason being a certain person I visited). They have the dunks and sometimes there's some music going on by a performer, actually almost all the time that I've been here over the years. read more

Sometimes the lights don't work...which isn't great when it looks like you're waiting under an underpass for your bus to show up. Times are usually pretty accurate because it's the start for a lot of buses that go there. Watch out for the charlie card machines there. sometimes they dont take card and even if there is an employee there directing people in line, he wont tell you that (it's happened twice to me) read more

A station which is a "hub" like Government Center Station with NO ELEVATOR!! No handicap access at all. Although I am a senior citizen who is still ambulatory, I do have knee pain hobbling down the stairs to get to the BLUE LINE from the Green Line especially when I am carrying heavy bags. I called the MBTA and was told that I could take the Green Line to the Red Line to the Orange Line to the Blue Line. What?? Take four trains?? Is this the solution to the problem that the MBTA has come up with? Those in wheelchairs have no choice but to take FOUR TRAINS but since I can still walk albeit painfully, I will continue to limp down the stairs holding the railing for dear life. On a recent adventure with one of the kids I am a nanny for, we found out the hard way that there is no elevator here. WTF MBTA haven't you heard of the Americans with Disabilities Act? So I hoisted the baby out of his stroller and carried him, his stroller, diaper bag, and various other baby accoutrements down the stairs. He could have gone down the stairs semi-independently, but the thought of him touching anything made me want to vomit. Judging by funky odor alone, Im pretty sure someone is selling pee flavored cotton candy and paying the mbta to waft the scent around with huge, oddly placed fans. Tip: get off at park st, its a 3 min walk up the road from gov't center. read more

Dunno...the station seems OK to me. Maybe my expectations aren't high enough but all I want is to take catch the train. I don't really need or expect a clean train station - it's a TRAIN station people, you gotta expect a little urine right? I actually appreciate the dinginess of it. Lately, it has even improved - they added a Kabloom stand (sells flowers). The vendor selling hats and t shirts is always a welcome site, and the Dunkin Donuts is nice to see (but I wouldn't get coffee from there and hope the person who works in that stand for hrs a day is getting a very large premium). Many times there is an entertainer while waiting for the train (music, singing, etc.). During the season, on Monday's and Wednesday's, there is a famer's market outside. It's a fine station, but it should have handicap access in addition to the escalator. My complaint is that the C line does not come very often. I usually see B, B, B, E, B, D, E, B, D, and then maybe a C. I want more C. read more

This is probably the most "hub-like" of the Green line stops not named Park St. It is also kind of a mess. Is this because of the fact that Government Center is the closest stop to Fanieul Hall? Most likely. It's a mess of people moving in and out, crowding up the small station while waiting for some Green Line train back to Riverside or whatever stop they came in on. Yes, there's a DD in here, but honestly, there's also one just outside too, and another one just around the corner (and a Starbucks too). Is there really that much of a need for one in the station? I mean, at least Harvard Square has the space for one and the lack of one in the immediate vicinity (and the fact that you don't have to use your card to go to Harvard's is a plus too). There is no redeeming factor to this station. It's small, muggy, and annoying. Unless you need the Blue Line, it would behoove you to walk over to Park Street a few blocks away. I guess almost all T stations are not worth anymore than 2-3 stars, but this is getting a 2 although...nope..m changing it to 1. I hate switching to the blue line here as the green line platform is always clogged and its impossible to get through all of the idiots trying to get on a train that clearly says is out of service. The green line pulls up way to far and lets people out on the platform where there is about a foot of space between the car and a wall. No need. The blue line section of govt center is ok, while its always packed to the brim and one of the escalators is always broken, you can easily bypass this by taking one of then next 7 bowdoin bound trains to bowdoin, and crossing over and getting a seat before it fills up at govt center. read more

I don't like it; it goes nowhere, and too often the trains are stopped here and unboarded or emptied prematurely. Best to go through it rather than stop here UNLESS you really WANT to stop here. Far too often the trains stop here. A recent development is sending D-line trains through here (when were T-riders TOLD that the D-Line would route through here? Oh, the platforms are often noisy and crowded with rude riders; but hey, it's human life. read more

Sometimes I actually cannot breathe in here. Either because of the heat or the stench, and I'm def down for the count when faced with the hot stench. Also, I saw a woman in there plucking her chest hair with her shirt halfway off, and once a homeless man grabbed my bag and tried to shove a filthy rag full of something brown into it. Can I get a security guard and a fan? Make it an Ionic Breeze if you're feeling classy. read more

I'm glad the station is open again and making my commute to revere shorter. However I'm not happy that the Boston college train does not go to government center,because the mbta feel it would cause congestion. So that means I still got to take any train to park street to catch the Boston college train home. read more

What an absolute inconvenience on so many levels for those riding the T. How can an entire station be closed for so long? How did they not look & find better alternatives? Once again, the T makes decisions that affect thousands & thousands of people per day & they raise the fares as if this should be the norm. The difficulties of going from red to blue are still an issue, when will it ever change. What a joke. read more

The screeching of the outbound green line trains is UNBEARABLE. And waiting for the B train sometimes takes forever. I mean come on, it's 5:30pm, the height of rush hour commuters, can't the T figure out how to have the trains come through in a rational order? I' ll see 3 E trains in a row, then D, D, C, D etc... The smell is usually bad, and the industrial size fans just blow the smell in your face. read more

For an indoor T station, the Government Center stop is A-OK. The only complaint I have is that there are far too few turnstiles and Charlie Card kiosks for such a busy station. Otherwise, it's not too shabby. read more

Great location, but the station is filthy. It's scheduled for re-hab this year & will be closing for awhile.

It's a subway station and it's old. But it has a Dunkin Donuts and its warm inside during the chilly winters. Sometimes they have live music performers to entertain you while waiting for a late Green Line train. read more

Not a good station to sit around in by any means,,,i mean i do drive but i need the T sometimes going into the city,,alot of homless and weird people on the daily go thru here, but the chinese guy downstairs has great popcorn lol.... but if you know where your going many trolleys pass thru here fast so thats a plus for this station,,South Station is better then all the others in my opinion read more

I have grown fond of Government center over the years. Dunkins and misc vendors downstairs add to the murky charm, although I have never bought anything. It has frequent trains when things are running correctly (I.E. no crashes or snowstorms delays). So much character at this station and you come out at City Hall with a quick walk to shopping or food. Trains are so loud here because it's one of the turn around stops for the rides back out to western points and the tracks are full of some of the sharpest turns in the system. Always crowded. One of my favorite stops in the entire city. read more
