She also spared students and masters and even had to create her own technique for testing. When she finished her black belt testing I was so proud of her. I saw her grow from being a shy little girl into a confident young lady who could handle herself in any situation, they even made her an instructors aide, assisting the younger students in the class. When she received her black belt they told her she's welcomed back anytime at no cost to train or assist the instructors. Some people may say negative things about a place because they didn't get their way. But Karate unlimited is the real deal if you want your child to be self confident and respectful and able to handle any situation.

And they do it very deceptively! Any good Martial Arts school will not make you sign a contract for more than one year and they will offer a very fair way to get out of that contract by employing the 30 day notice clause. My sister signed up there not knowing anything about McDojo's and got robbed for $900!!! She tore a ligament in her ankle kicking the bags there and couldn't continue. They would not let her out of that bogus contract. She had to get the police involved. Before she eventually prevailed, the company already hit her bank account several times (in a one week span) to the tune of over $900! They said she owed them $6,000!!!! Yes!!! You read that right! SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS!!! She had only been there for 2 weeks!!! Furthermore, what makes this school a McDojo is they have belt test fees (no good school will charge you for a belt test!), children black belts (earning a black belt is extremely difficult! Something children should not be able to do!), black belt clubs (black belt clubs are pure money makers, nothing more!), and a few other things. It really is impressive to watch the seamless switch between handling different age groups. Each class feels really appropriate for the student's level. The studio is comfortable, the environment is friendly, and our kids really do learn a lot of valuable life skills beyond hitting an opponent. There has been a huge confidence and positive attitude boost from all 3 of our kids attending classes as compared to when they first started (some needed it more). I have seen progressive improvements in other students as well. I do wish I would have had the chance to meet Master Marvil. His legacy feels like it lives on here, even though I have only seen pictures and heard stories. We will never force our kids to continue studying martial arts. They do have the choice of other activities in it's place, but all 3 continue to stay and advance through the belt levels here and hope to do so for the years to come. One day, I may have to start attending classes myself. Although, I did always want to attend a rival school so I can face my children in a competition cobra kai style, but I'll hold for now.

There's a man & woman who run the place (spouses, I believe). Very nice folks who can kick your butt. They ask that you "check your ego at the door" and the environment is welcoming and supportive. They meet you at your level and push to keep you improving. The room is large, with a cool painted wooden slat ceiling, and there is a humongous, cushy mat covering almost the entire floor. (I was told that the building used to be the old, old firehouse/hall). Mentioning the ceiling is worthwhile, as you do spend a bit of time looking at it, after repeatedly landing face-up on the soft mat during a class. I would have continued with my classes, as they were enjoyable; however, I was not comfortable with the whole "everyone's barefoot & we're all rolling around on the mat" thing. I realize that it's necessary for this practice. However, and this is just personal preference on my end, I didn't see anything indicating attention to that detail. Maybe if I knew their mat cleaning schedule and everyone had sparkly-clean feet, I'd be more willing to return. Of note, I do have a highly sensitive sense of smell, and may be bothered by things that others don't even notice. If you can get past the "everyone's sweaty and barefoot" aspect (&, I'm sure most people can), I'd recommend this place. The friendly couple and supportive atmosphere, plus the unique ceiling are worthy of four stars. Sensei Sam is friendly and a great teacher, always coming up with creative and funny ways to teach us the art. The school has trained many great black belts and those who come in to teach and train in the advanced classes are all extremely capable martial artists in their own right. The style of Aikido they teach is very practical and there is a definite push to ensure that what we learn is truly effective on the street. One thing I would say to a new visitor though is to be patient! Like any art, it takes time to become competent and effective at Aikido so be prepared to put in the effort needed to master the moves.
