Cherry Le did my makeup for a television premiere last week. It was my first time getting my makeup…read moredone since my wedding almost twelve years ago, and Cherry made this middle-aged mom feel glamorous and red carpet ready. I found Cherry on Yelp and messaged her just a few days ahead of the Tuesday night event. She responded with her quote and the relevant details, and after mulling over whether or not to spend the money, I secured the appointment with a deposit the night before. She only had a 1:00 slot available, but she was able to come to me, meeting me in my hotel room. She arrived right on time with an arsenal of beauty supplies. I liked her immediately. She was so friendly and energetic, and said flattering things about my skin, obviously music to my 39-year-old ears. I had a great time hanging out with her. She asked what I was looking for and I said I was walking a red carpet and just wanted to look good. She took me through her overall plan and started with my eye makeup, layering on colors and checking in to see if I was okay with the level of drama. I didn't know enough to weigh in and let her do her thing, and less than an hour later, I was fully dolled up. She even put fake eyelashes on top of my already fake eyelashes. To be honest, I was a little worried at first. I looked very dramatic for two in the afternoon, and I wondered if I'd let her go overboard. Once I was dressed and at the premiere, though, I felt fairly confident and comfortable and got lots of compliments. I walked the carpet, the second time I've done that in my life, and stood and posed awkwardly for a million photos. I've seen the pictures from both events and am really glad I got my makeup done this time around. The bolder makeup just worked better with those bright lights. I'm not professionally pretty (I'm a writer, which is, if anything, an ugly person's job) so it was fun to get my face painted and hang out with the attractive people who go to television premieres. Thanks to Cherry, I looked as good as my genes would allow. If you're looking for a professional makeup artist in New York City, I'd highly recommend Beauty by Cherry Le. She's a sweetheart, and she does excellent work.

She isn't on social media (nor does she need to be), but if you are looking for someone who will do natural, elegant styling for hair and makeup on your wedding day (or in our case, wedding adjacent since we got married a year earlier), Emi is IT. She was totally responsive to preferences I had expressed before and during our session, she used high quality products, and as someone who finds it difficult to find an artist who understands how to do makeup for Asian faces and features, she hit all the marks and more. I was so happy with her work, and I highly recommend her!! 10/10

But a new high school experience had her feeling unsettled about her beauty regimine. In the appointment with Shara, I discovered that she was first and foremost an incredible listener, as my teen had specific requests. Shara treated my teen like her most important client and answered questions throughout the session. She explained every step of the process (with 'why', for my scientifically minded kid) and gave her choices throughout the lesson. My daughter never felt like she was being pushed into a look that wasn't uniquely her. The best part of all was the hands-on practice which gave my teen enormous confidence. For people who may not feel confident among beauticians like my daughter and me, it was incredibly comfortable and fun and informative. There was no heavy sales pitch to buy products, but we chose to buy some hard to find products for my teen's unique skin tone and couldn't be happier. I'm already planning to return with my daughter for a special skin treatment as a holiday gift.
