What a poor experience . She's so pricey and when she gives you a quote and by the time you pick up your dress it's so much more. For example our two bridesmaids dresses were the same and we got a quote of $150 and $200. Upon picking up our dresses it jumped to $190 and $290!! Our dress was only $180 to begin with. She didn't even call to ask for permission to charge that high amount before doing the work. In addition my dress did not fit and the bust area was very loose. My friends came out with with one point above one side and no point above the other side of the bust area. It was supposed to have a point on both sides. See attached photo of Mays work vs another tailor . We pointed out all these areas that were wrong and that's when it got worst. She claimed we had two different style dresses with two different fabrics, that's why it's different. And then she told us our eyes were not right. We told her it was the identical dress with the same style number. We argued about the price and our disappointment! Seamstress that lacks the skills and the professionalism. So my mistake not reading the yelp reviews first as I only saw the google reviews before going to mays.. I brought in 6 velvet curtain panels to be shortened.. They were all 84" long and I wanted them a finished 63 inch because i have radiators... in mays terms -21 inches finished .. 84 finished - 21 finished is 63 finished hem.. I left the store without a quote as I know they were heavier .. big mistake !! I brought them in sept and gave her till NOv before i stopped in to see the progress because I hadn't heard from her.. They were not even started because she even verified -21 inches.. that was a fri and miraculously on Sunday i received a message they were completed and cost was $450.. or $75.00 a panel... thats insane straight cut and hem.. so i go into the store.. and she was busy but she brought me the curtains out as I left a bag with them because they are so big.. made it easy on both of us.. so i took one or 2 out of the bag and looked nice.. I negotiated with her because I still felt the price was to high and i gave her $60.00 a panel$ 360.00 .. so go home take them out i have 4 panels that measure 60 inch finished and 2 panel that are 67 inch finished... They are all supposed to 63 inches finished so they can be used without rings clips however i will have to use clips now... I will not go back as I am afraid she will ruin them.. I do believe she is purposely not giving a price as to overcharge after she has your items . As i experienced the same encounters in shop as the other with issues. read more

May is a very kind person, however I had a very disappointing experience with her store. I was in a wedding this past weekend, and she held onto my dress until the day before I left and did not complete any work on the dress. I initially contacted May in early March to alter my dress. Due to snow, the appointment had to be canceled, and I was unable to reschedule until mid-April. I did not need my dress hemmed, and only needed the waist taken in a half an inch and the shoulders let out an inch if she needed time. We discussed timing when I gave her my dress and I told her I needed the dress by mid-late June. She did not quote me for any price, and told me to forget about it and she will call me when it is done. Fast forward to early June, and I was leaving my nearby job and would no longer be in convenient distance from the store in mid June. I tried to call her multiple times and she told me she would call me back, left me on hold for over 10 minutes, and would not listen when I tried to explain I was moving. I then decided to show up to collect my dress. When I arrived, she said she was still working on the dress and could have it done the following week. I needed to leave for the out of town wedding on Wednesday of the following week and told her she could have until Tuesday. When I arrived to pick up the dress on the day we agreed- after she had turned me away a week earlier- the dress was untouched. Not only did she not alter the dress, but she did not allow me the opportunity to take my business elsewhere. She also did not return my hanger and garment bag. I am lucky that I am tall, wore heels, and have a member of my family who was able to tack my dress in 24 hours. Two weeks before my wedding, my dress did NOT fit my body--another tailor's faulty work of an exaggerated bust and too clingy/tight in the hips, but May corrected it and handled it with expert skill, precision, timeliness, and BEAUTY. DO NOT GO HERE. All I needed was a bridesmaid dress hemmed, no other alterations. I went to pick up my dress the day it was suppose to be ready and when I got there she couldn't find the dress and then realized she hadn't even started it. I see a variety of reviews here. It's possible that some have had a bad experience with May. I have not. She's been kind and cooperative with me and my needs which, without going into details, are special. Given that there's much competition for services like May's and that you can't trust every Yelp review you read, the best thing to do is ignore the top two most positive ones and the top two most negative ones and go with the mean. From what I'm seeing in the reviews I've read, women have the most negative reviews. Not a surprise as women in general get cheated when it comes to all things related to clothes. Dry cleaning, for example, but that's widely known. read more

May is such a sweet person and did an amazing job on my wedding dress! I fell in love with a dress that had been discontinued, so bought it online second hand even though it was several sizes too large. My future SIL highly recommended May and has been going to her for years. She made it fit perfectly and even noticed small imperfections I would've never seen and fixed those too! She provided me an estimate range and ended up charging me the lowest quoted price. May only takes cash/check but gave me a heads up about that when I dropped off my dress. I know everyone seems to love this place and I agree that May was extremely friendly and welcoming, however the cost for alterations was outrageous!! First, I have been to tailors before that couldn't give you an accurate price until finished but I always got a ballpark range (especially if they believed it could be costly!) which I did not get here. Second, I never heard from May so I called her the day she promised it and she told me it had been ready and it was going to be $200 (the bridesmaid dress only cost $190 to start). I was furious... $200 to tighten the straps some, hem about 3 inches and let out the slip slightly. Her response to my questioning was just that it "was a lot of work" .. no information on standard pricing, no apology, etc. For reference, many of the other bridesmaid had same/similar work and all paid under $100. When I got there, the straps were SO tight. They were cutting into my body to the point where it hurt and I could barely lift my arms. She kept telling me that she didn't think they should be loosened at all because it could impact the look of the chest. I finally had to put my foot down and say that I didn't care because this look was not comfortable nor flattering. She gave me a new pickup date for 2 days later but then was willing to fix the straps right then and there which I did appreciate. While I am pleased with the alterations and May was very nice, I will not ever return simply due to pricing and lack of transparency. read more

I have gone to May's for a few years now. I've been a loyal customer and brought a lot of business to her. She has always been kind and helpful, but I always thought her prices were OUTRAGEOUS. She always tries to rush you out the door without giving you a price ( by saying things like " you're so pretty! You're mom should be proud" ). She has a charm, I'll tell you that. You have to be FIRM and ask for an exact price as she has no prices listed and will often be reluctant to give you a quote... You may even have to ask her to write it down for proof. I've picked up a few things and was quoted ridiculous prices, but I loved May so always gave in. I brought EVERYTHING to her. I recently had a bridesmaid dress I brought in for my sisters wedding. It needed 1.5 inches let out in the back and about 2 inches cut off the bottom. She told me this was a rush order since I brought it in with a little over a weeks notice ( all other bridesmaids had last min alterations in a week with no issues, but she said it would cost a lot more)....again, she quickly rushed me out. I had to ask a few times for a price and she quoted me $250!! The dress it's self cost $250!!. Being someone that doesn't like confrontation, I told her that was way too much money and that I couldn't afford that. She said " I'll work with you" I trusted her so I left the dress with her ( big mistake) I called back 30 mins later and said " May, we have to do a lot better....I cannot afford to pay another $250.....she wouldn't budge and when I asked to pick up my dress..30 mins after I dropped it off she refused and said she already started working on it....really...in 30 mins? She claimed she had the dress all open and started. I called the bridal shop I got it from and all the employees were STUNNED by that price....they had NEVER heard of those types of simple alterations being that expensive and that they should be around $100 tops. They also mentioned that all bridesmaids dresses have about 2 inches of extra fabric in the back in case they need to be let out. When I called her back and asked to to STOP work ( I would pay her for what she had already done), but that I found someone who would help me out with price she REFUSED to stop working on it. ( at this point I was in TEARS) I called the other bridesmaids and two of them had them let out and had the bottom shortened and paid no more than $125 tops. I kept trying to call her back but she suddenly wouldn't answer her phone from my number...then suddenly her mailbox wouldn't take any new messages. I was screwed. I went in to pick it up and she said the best she could do was $200. When I mentioned that I called and told her the price was too much asked her to stop working on it and that I would come pick it up she told me " people like you make me miserable!!!" and " you are treating me like a cheap Chinese Immigrant!", " nobody ever asks the price..EVER... you need to trust me". ( i find that IMPOSSIBLE to believe. I calmly explained to her that I respect her work, have come to her for years and have recommended her to all my friends and that I never mentioned where she was from she said " that's what you said!" ....it was the most uncomfortable exchange and EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL. She kept saying it was SOO MUCH WORK and that she had to find new fabric because there " wasn't any"....what? there' two inches in the back! She said there wasn't any fabric in the back ( lie) She also showed me her work...she did ALL this work on the bodess that I NEVER asked her to do! it was a back and forth at her shop for about 25 mins! She insulted me a few times and then she made me cry by calling me a horrible person. Just to get out of there I paid $190 ( much to all my friend's frustrations....including my sister ..the Bride) My mom said to never go to her again and I WON'T. SHE LOST A LOYAL CUSTOMER and the funny thing is that right when I handed over the $190 she quickly changed her mood and said " GOOD GIRL.. you're such a sweet girl! So beautiful and your mom would be proud"....HUH? I thought I was a horrible person a few minutes ago....I was bullied. To top it off...bridesmaids had to pin the dress AT the wedding because it STILL didn't fit. I Will NEVER return. May does a very good job, but I really wish I had pinned her down with a price before I left the shop. I just picked up a $150 prom dress and a blouse for my daughter that I had left to be altered on Monday. (3 layers of tulle plus lining, and two shoulder straps that needed to be shortened, plus taking in the side seems of a crop top blouse) I tailor far more clothes than the average person, so I am very aware that it can be costly, but have always believed it's worth it for a proper fit. My best friend is a seamstress, saw the gown, and offered to do it for me for free as a favor, but I didn't want to bother her. I take responsibility for what happened because I should have asked the exact cost before I agreed to the alteration. I was expecting about $200-250. Imagine my shock when my husband went to pick it up and was charged SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!!!!! SIX HUNDRED!!!!!!! This review is in no way a commentary on her workmanship, which I am sure is fantastic, just a warning to clients to ask for her prices first.
