The second-highest ranking JKA Shotokan instructor in the country, Takahashi Sensei is a brilliant technician who understands every minute detail to good karate technique. His dojo is probably one of the best values for your money you will find int he area too. For a flat monthly fee, no contract, you get unlimited classes 90% of which are taught by Takahashi Sensei himself, the rest being covered by his senior black belts, who are no slouches themselves, in instances when Sensei is away at a seminar, training camp or tournament. I only take the Shotokan Karate basic (all belt) classes and I take kickboxing weekly. I have past experience in Kwon Soo Do (brown belt ages 10-14) but have not practiced in...about...20...years. I feel welcomed by this dojo that is a family. Shihan Dunn and all the senseis, sempais, and belts are helpful, encouraging, and in no way trying to force you to go past what you can do. I have medical issues so yes, some things are harder. It is NOT FORCED for you to do exactly what everyone else does. They expect you to TRY and IMPROVE at your own pace. The belts have tips. After a certain amount of classes, you get a change of color tip. Then after a few of those, you are eligible for your next belt. However, let me make this clear. IT IS NOT ABOUT THE TIPS OR THE NEXT BELT. Progression, improvement, working to better yourself and others. Yes, you can strive to be the next great black belt but the point is put as much as you can, better yourself, and move forward. Shihan Sakataka is an amazing and patient instructor. He's not the most talkative person, but he teaches very methodically and has a great understated sense of humor. In particular, he is amazing with kids (my little sister trained with him for many years and eventually got her black belt). Shihan really lives and breathes Karate. I've trained in several different martial art schools since then and I now think this is one of the best in terms of instructor, fellow members and general morale.
