Saltbox Farm

Saltbox Farm

Saltbox catered our wedding in rural Vermont a few weeks ago, and my husband and I (as well as our…read moreguests) couldn't be happier! My husband and I are both vegetarian and good food obsessed, so when we first started planning our wedding, we knew good food was a top priority. It was important to us to have a vegetarian wedding that was delicious and vegetable-focused (and not just boring pastas or tofu steaks). We also knew that lots of our guests were meat-eaters and we wanted to make sure everyone walked away excited about the food. Well, Saltbox completely pulled it off. They worked patiently with us at every step. We gave them the adjective "Ottolenghi-esque" at the beginning and a few other notes about our taste, and they ran with it from there, delivering a draft menu that was amazing and then revising it according to our feedback. Throughout, they were easy to work with and extremely professional, and they pulled off of the details on the day beautifully, with everyone leaving happily stuffed and thrilled. (They even accommodated our gluten-free and dairy-free guests with delicious alternatives.) The waitstaff was also fantastic and helped ensure that my husband and I got enough to eat amidst all the busy-ness and dancing. Now, just a few weeks later, we are constantly hearing from friends and family about how great the food was (the best they've ever had by some accounts), asking for Saltbox's name, and remarking about how they completely forgot that they were eating vegetarian for the night because every dish was so delicious. I have been to lots of weddings and frankly, most of the food is not memorable. Saltbox's food absolutely was.

On May 21st, we held our anniversary party at the Acton Women's Club -- we rented the entire house,…read moreboth upstairs and downstairs, for our 50-60 guests coming from far and wide to celebrate. It was very impressive how many people commented, as they arrived, on how wonderful the setting was -- "How did you find this place?" It has a lot of charm and a bit of quirkiness thrown in for flavor. Reasonably priced, conveniently located, and managed by members of the Club who were readily accessible and accommodating. We had a great night and much of the mood was provided by the ambiance of the AWC. Wholeheartedly recommend choosing this location for gatherings!

So the time comes and we're pulling up and I ask the boy where we're going. He says "there" and points to a really cute looking historic home. I swear I must have let out a sigh of relief at that point. The place was really quaint with old wallpaper and furniture. It's like visiting your great grandparents house, that sort of feel. We had the whole place to ourselves, but spent the time downstairs where there was a full kitchen, dining room area and living room. The perfect space for the number of guests that came. Upstairs is a big room that's all cleared out with a little stage. I hear they teach ballroom dancing to kids here once a week, which I think is fantastic. Overall I was impressed with the place and was happy my family had picked someplace a little more unique for the day. Now if only I can convince the boy to someday move back to Acton so the future offspring can take dance lessons here!

Went with my husband and 10month old to pick some asian pears and honeycrisps. There was organized and ample parking. The main paths have large gravel rocks that were loose and uneven and a grass strip in the middle. It was a bit hard to push through even with our stroller with large wheels. The tractors that occasioned through blew the dust up around the paths too. There were plenty of porta potties and I also liked they have a hand washing station too. We didn't try any of the food trucks but appreciated the option. Farm stand was small, there were some picnic tables but could have been more (potentially near the food trucks) There were some chicks, bunnies, a goat, and donkey? to look at. The kids play area has a 2-5 & 5-12 play structures and water play but they were very close together, not much room to run around between the structures.

From what I could tell, there are larger orchards in the area but Shelburne seemed to have everything you need - a food truck (with an excellent burger and pulled pork sandwich), a hard cider place, the aforementioned apple cider donuts, and a little general store selling jams and whatnot. At first glance, there didn't appear to be a ton of seating but if you walk a bit further up the hill, past the grassy patch, there's a good amount of benches and tables. Apple cider donuts review: 4/5? Not as fresh or as warm as I've sampled at other orchards but these had a healthy dusting of cinnamon sugar and a great chew. Downing two of these bad boys was not a great decision for the ride back (plus I had a cheeseburger). Cheeseburger: 4.5/5. Just a bun, patty, cheese, ketchup but listen, this was one of the best cheeseburgers I've had in a while. The bun was perfectly buttered and toasted and there was just the right ratio of meat to bread to condiments. I felt really, really food-drugged after eating this and the donuts. All the burger needed was some pickles. The only thing I didn't love about the layout is the area with the food truck had only three or four tables (no chairs) and faced the row of Porta Potties but I get that space is at a premium. There was also a sizable hill to get from the food truck to the area with tables/benches/donuts, which made walking in cycling shoes an enormous pain, though that's a me-problem.
