I have been a client of Mayhood's for well over a decade. The almost hour drive is worth it. Staff is always helpful and extremely knowledgeable (if one of them does not have all the answers they will get someone else to help), selection of firearms, hunting and fishing (including live bait) is the best around. The layaway policy, with no fees and a low down payment/monthly payment is the best I have ever found ANYWHERE! If they do not have something you want, they will try to get it in for you, if it is available. Oh, and you can get your fishing/hunting licenses there too. Sure, if it is busy or they are running multiple NYS background checks there could be a slight wait, but there is plenty to look at until it's your turn. Prices are competitive and they do run sales/host Manufacturer and Customer appreciation events several times a year. The owner, Mike is very often there and always willing to assist. I have always had quality service here. I do know what I want before I walk in however. Their selection is usually very good to excellent. As far as gun shopsgo this is one of the better and I've been to more than I can remember. UPDATE: I bought a revolver there and picked it up today. If I could give them 10 stars I would. Great local sporting goods store located right off of Hwy 12, just before you get to the center of Norwich. This place serves a great need especially given the various outdoor activities in the surrounding area so certainly if in the area or just passing by and need to pick up some items for your outdoor adventure I would recommend checking this place out they have a big selection of items to choose from. read more

Stopped here twice while on vaca. Wow, this place is packed to the gills! I didnt think NY had places like this any more! The employees were helpful and pleasant. A friend traded in a shotgun. Neither party was thrilled to have to fill out all that paperwork but the crew handled it professionally. And they arent afraid to talk politics! Great store! read more

The staff has zero knowledge, when it comes to quality work. The owner is a total rip off. This small town shop is terrible. To save your time and money I highly recommend going somewhere else. They sell Mathew Bows at the absolute highest price possible, and they can't even restring one correct. I have seen several like this. Mayhoods is overall a good place to shop for many hunting, fishing, or firearms activity. I will say compared to years ago there customer service side as well as selection when it comes to archery equipment has gone way down hill. Bought my self and my girlfriend a bow. A month later still waiting on parts for my bow and still waiting on if we can even have her bows draw weight adjusted. A friends mother-in-law bought the same bow as me orderd new mods for her bow from there local shop and had them with in a week. When calling for updates all I get is shouldn't be much longer. After paying that much for a bow I didn't think I would have to wait 2 extra weeks for 2 small parts to come in. And so far not even an apology or an offer for any discounts. read more

I took my bow to have new strings and a tune up done. Said it was gonna be two weeks, which I didn't mind. Got the bow back and practiced with it my arrows were all over the place. Took it to another bow shop. That shop showed me it wasn't even set to my draw length. Was suppose to be 29 1/2 in wasn't even 28 1/2. the cams were way out of time. They don't know what they are doing when it comes to setting bows up. read more

My husband and I live about 50 miles from Mayhood's. Last week we drove by and saw firewood that looked really well-split in the driveway. We pulled in and saw a blue sign saying the wood was $65.00 per face cord. The sign was on a pallet that was up on its end. We were in a hurry, but we drove back this week to get a face cord of wood. I began loading the wood while my husband went inside to pay. After a bit he came out followed by an employee. Apparently, the man in the store wanted $70.00 per face cord. He refused to honor the only posted price claiming "that was last year's price". The sign had slipped down, but the pallet was still on end, and the sign was clearly visible. The employee removed the sign. We had driven far enough that we took the wood, but we felt ripped off. Even though It was only $5.00 difference, it was the principle, and the lack of ethics here. We won't go back, nor would we recommend that anyone do business here. read more
