Wow! There is nothing more bizarre than experiencing unfair, unwelcoming, and absolutely rude service in a foreign country by the same race of people. My family and I were visiting Cheltenham for my siblings' high school education, we flew all the way from China for more than 12 hours on the plane. We had two GREAT visits, people were friendly, schools were truly AMAZING. but the whole experience changed when we had dinner at the Mayflower, an Asian restaurant; where we try to find a taste of home. As we started to order, the menu was confusing. So I asked few questions, but the lady with highlights on her hair who takes our order with such an impatient attitude. Half contemptuous smile and half unwillingness to serve, and answered as if we are idiots. After the order, we didn't order any rice. she mentioned about the restaurant will get busy later on so they do not take reorder dishes which we understand. However, when all the foods start to serve, we feel like we need some rice, so we asked another waiter to add few bowl of rice. The lady who took the order earlier, came back to the table and started blaming on us. When she go back to the kitchen and bring rice to the table, she sort of smash the dishes onto the table with very big noise. Seems like she's trying to make announcement. Did we violated the law or something? Why is she acting like this? And the restaurant was not popular at all. By the time we finished everything, there was not many table were occupied!!!! Absolutely trashy experience that I have ever had even I live abroad for over 10 years. I have never been treated in any Asian restaurant as I have experienced today. read more

The Mayflower restaurant in Cheltenham is a wonderful example of great Chinese cooking. The wide ranging menu is impressive and my selections exceeded my expectations when I first had a meal here. I have a terrible habit of always sticking to the same dishes whenever I have chinese food, but when I ate here I couldn't wait to try everything! It really opened my eyes to how Chinese food ought be, and I would certainly recommend it to anyone. The food couldn't be further from the typical slop that you get from most takeaways - it is beautifully cooked and presented. The staff were lovely, very friendly and lots of smiles which always adds to a nice evening. One of my favourite restaurants in Cheltenham. read more

I love this restaurant - the best in gloucestershire for Chinese food by far! I'd say though that to get the best out of the experience, one should eat in - they do take aways as well, but nothing compares to the great food and atmosphere you get in the restaurant itself. As other reviewers have stated, the Mayflower is quite expensive. However, it more than makes up for this in the quality of the food. The restaurant is comfortable and the staff are friendly. It has a good wine list and a selection of other drinks, including a very nice Tsingao beer. Then the food arrives and blows you away. Crispy duck, Chinese spare ribs, and the best crispy shredded beef in chilli I have tasted. Well worth it for a great night out, especially if with friends. read more

Lovely restaurant in Cheltenham town centre. This place has won several awards over the years, and deservedly so. The food is lovely, with several set menus, an extensive vegetarian menu, and plenty of choice for everyone, from the expected standards to the exotic (garlic and chilli frogs legs, anyone?). Good wine menu, and a separate award-winning brandy selection. Not especially cheap, but good value. Service is friendly and just the right side of attentive. read more

Ambience is ok but food is a shame. It's nothing Chinese other than the look. Price is on the high end. All in all not worth it.

Ate here last year, not sure if it has changed since. We ate here due to all the good reviews and the awards etc. Found the food pretty average considering the price. Staff were friendly though :-) read more

I found this to be a mediocre restaurant. The decor and service were reasonable and the starters were conventionally pleasant but the main courses were much too salty, the wine list was very limited and the price was on the high side for very average Chinese meal. read more
