Expect a lively vibe, it can be quite loud with all the folks talking, and the tables are quite close together. Have to say the food was really wonderful for the most part. There was only one item which I kind of was mixed on but love the sauces they were not overly heavy, but instead incredibly flavorful. It's not just French food. They did have some Italian items on the menu - think Continental. The wait staff are very good, and they replaced plates and cutlery between each course and wipe the table. They were most attentive and very knowledgeable about the items on the menu. Most people seem to be having the potato croquettes with the cream, fresh and caviar. So we did start with that. Then we had the Masa Luna pasta that was stuffed with smoked eggplant, absolutely wonderful. Then we shared the sable fish with tomato, and the steak with roasted kale and grapes. We ended with a blueberry crème tart. Definitely some great innovation in the dishes. The only thing I will say was that while most folks did get the potato croquettes with caviar (us included), I personally found that this was not as flavorful as what I would've expected it to be. And it's a fairly pricey item on the menu. I expect caviar to have a little bit more of a kind of salty seafood flavor and it just seemed very bland to me. There are definitely other compliments that you could add to those potato croquettes, which were really quite wonderful. I will say that the rest of the meal was wonderful and very enjoyable. I definitely would go back and enjoy a meal there again as all around in general, it was a great experience. Being on Harbord near Spadina, parking is very limited, so either get there by rideshare or take transit. It's just steps from the Spadina Streetcar stop.

The staff were very welcoming from beginning to end in this very tiny restaurant. They could barely squeeze a washroom on the way to the kitchen and behind the bar. We ordered two entrees. The pasta dish with seafood and the beef dish. The beef dish was good but it was more of an appetizer than an entree. The pasta was equally good but again on the small size. We decided to order another entree, the steak tartare. Pretty good. Also, asked for some bread. It came with some seasoned butter and tiny cornichons. Tasty. We ordered two desserts, the chocolate ganache and the pear brûlée. Both were very good. Sadly, hot beverages are not available at Dreyfus. The server apologized for this lack of availability. We never had an issue hearing each other so the noise level was acceptable but we did arrive very early in the evening. The lighting is dim and 60s and 70s music is plain the background. Dreyfus is named after the famed Alfred Dreyfus and the political antisemitic scandal in France in the late 1800s. Yes, there are French items on the menu including wines but any connection to the Jewish Dreyfus experience is non-existent. Parking is at a premium. Lots of local traffic. One negative that is not related to the restaurant but its location is surrounded by cannabis stores. They openly have customers using their products outdoors which encourages a detour for those wishing to avoid second-hand drug use.

I went around 5pm on a weekday. Had a $10 martini (HH price), half dozen oysters, endive salad, French onion soup, and their crème brûlée... ate everything. Would have licked the plates. 1) it was a strong martini. Lovely 2) BEAUTIFUL oysters and I eat a lot of oysters 3) sweet and nutty endive salad. Crunchy from the nuts, crispy from the endives, sweet dressing with some chili flakes to wrap it all together. Didn't lick my plate, but I did lick my fork all the way to my fingers 4) hearty French onion soup. Wasn't too salty. Good amount of bread and cheese. Fabulous. Comforting 5) ended it all with crème brûlée. Not the smoothest, but they had vanilla bean in it and a nice crust on top, so I'm not complaining.

We arrived shortly after they opened, the aesthetic is eclectic and simple. The seating arrangements are comfortable and available indoors and outdoors. We both got their classic breakfast with double smoked bacon; I opted for a beer ginger drink and my friend ordered a chai latte with oat milk. She really enjoyed her drink, and it was a decent size. Whereas my beer and ginger juice was delicious yet on the small side, especially since ice cubes took up a lot of space. As for the meal itself, the eggs with crème fraîche was out of this world! They were the most delicious eggs I've ever eaten. I wish the portion was slightly bigger. The double smoked bacon was perfectly cooked and not greasy. It was thick and not overly salty. They fill up the rest of the plate with 3-4 slices of sourdough and I appreciated that they butters the toast and offered us jam. Overall the plate was fresh and delicious. I' savoured each bite. The service was good, attentive and friendly. Towards the end of our meal, it was getting busy and the noise volume increased, so just a heads up to anyone who doesn't like loud spaces. The music was on point though and I can imagine on a warmer day, the patio would also be a cool vibe to experience. One note I feel is needed to mention is the bathroom. I almost missed the steps descending down to the bathroom because the area is poorly lit. This is a safety issue. Secondly, if you're tall like me, the stalls are very tight and claustrophobic. I barely had any room in the stall and it was very uncomfortable; be careful if you're bringing your purse/phone cause there's no space and I could easily see how things can drop in the toilet. I would highly recommend the business investing into this a little more.

The prix fixe is available as 2 course or 3 course, with a slightly lower cost for 3 course vegetarian. There is also a fairly extensive cocktail and wine menu. The salad was well dressed, with a great mustard based dressing. The tart was perfectly composed, great balance of pastry, vegetables and cheese. For the entrees, we had the "Magret de Canard" and "Coq au Vin". Both were excellent - perfectly cooked, and great accompaniments; but the red wine sauce with the chicken was the standout. For dessert we shared the "Clafoutis aux Poires", pears baked in thin layers of pastry with vanilla ice cream. It was freshly baked, and not too sweet - so a great end to the dinner. The overall service was great - well timed, not over bearing and friendly. This is a great place for the the special occasion or treat;

Perfectly lighted, which seems odd to say but yeah, it makes a difference. Service: Impeccable. Professional, friendly, helpful but also unobtrusive. Food: TL;DR: "ooh la la" We started with the torched hamachi crudo, which was a symphony of flavour on the palate. The fish was perfectly prepared and struck with just the right texture and char. The candied ginger hits with some zesty accompaniment. In another instant, you're transported to Southeast Asia with a soothing coconutty, tamarind (?) dressing and finally, your head turns (in a good way) when the jalapeño hits. Every bite was a trip. We were in a foodie trance when the next courses arrived. The triple fried French fries were as good as they sounded. There's no picture because my mouth was faster than my camera. The lobster & shrimp fritters were perfectly crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and packed with crustacean flavour. The sauce was another hit of tang and zest. I think the gastronomical term for how we ate them is "wolfing." The Brussels sprouts were smaller and more flavourful than you commonly find on menus featuring this on-trend appetizer. They were perfectly caramelized and seasoned. The peanuts offered a nice crunchy contrast. We finished with the lemon meringue pie which was a visual and sweet feast in and of itself. I favoured the crust and the meringue topping to the ultra sweet and tart filling but all three shone together in concert. The meringue especially was a gooey, marshmallowy party that spilled over the rest of the dessert. I finished with an Amaro Meletti, which was a nice caramel-cola flavoured digestif and would make a fantastic sorbet (hint to the chefs for a summer treat). Allez chez Aloette, gentile Aloette

We were in their dining room and had the $285 per person multicourse dinner. The courses vary and tonight it was 9. The first course involves three amuse bouches, which are interesting little one bite treats. The next course was sashimi with lots of additional ingredients like eggplant or smoke. I really enjoyed the egg and bread course. My partner really liked the rice with uni course, and the duck with chestnut course. There was also a scallop course, wagyu steak course. We finished with a cheese course then desserts. The desserts were very fun with multiple small bites. The service is excellent, as you may imagine. It's mostly the attention to detail. The waitstaff know the ingredients thoroughly, remember allergies, and are very attentive. I like the decor. Everything is high quality without being wasteful. It was intimate but the tables were spaced out to still feel fairly spacious. Everything was delicious but I'm giving it a 4 star rating because it's just not worth nearly $300 per person before tax, tip, drinks. The portions were also very small. The cheese course was almost comically tiny, with a piece of fig that must have been about 1/8 of the fruit. I can understand limiting portion sizes so guests are not overly full or if the ingredients are very expensive. But it would be nice to have more than two small bites of rice. Alo is an interesting dining experience. I am glad we got to try it but was genuinely not full at the end of the meal.

They've definitely put some thought into the decorations. We came on a Sunday night for dinner and reserved on OpenTable. The first thing we noticed was that the dining tables are very small, so it was a little cramped for sharing appetizers. We ordered: Escargots: cooked in shell with an almond sauce. Not bad but not too exciting 1/2 dozen oysters: served with a variety of sauces including a "spicy" hot sauce. Both my wife and I prefer to eat our oysters plain to savour the freshness and sweetness. These were PEI oysters and a little small. Striped bass: clearly previously frozen, as it has that freezer aftertaste. If you're going to use non-fresh fish you need to know what seasonings to use to remove the freezer taste. Or use better ingredients. Beef bourguignon: cooked to a good tenderness with a good mix of side vegetables. Definitely a step up from the fish. Absinthe dark chocolate mousse: Good flavours. Mousse was denser than expected. Overall the food was 2.5 stars, rounded up to 3.

I won't pretend I'm an expert on French cuisine, but flavour-wise, Chantecler did great. Their steak tartare is easily in my top 5 at the moment. The half duck is also my favorite here, with dry-aged duck breast + duck confit leg and both cooked beautifully. The jus adds a little tangy note that cuts through the richness of the duck so well.
