I visit the Mayan Theatre regularly. It is on South Broadway near my home in the Baker neighborhood. Earlier this month I watched The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. It is an Australian film from the 1980's on their large main screen about a aging drag queen going to Alice Springs from Sydney for a gig. The screen and sound system could handle the visual image with excellent sound. Last week, I saw "Moonlight" about gay black culture in Miami. The movie won the 2016 Academy Award for best picture. It was shown in one of the two upper screens. No issues. The floors were clean. read more

This place is such a gem! Super fun independent theater to see fun films at. Loved the idea for Meryl Streep Tuesdays in May. There's plenty of parking behind the theater, which is nice, and the concessions are pretty cheap. One suggestion? They need new seats!! Theirs here are a bit uncomfy, so keep that in mind for longer movies. read more

This is an old school theater with all the old school charm. Everything inside seems like it's been there since day one, which is fine but you should set your expectations. Ticket booth out front, concessions as soon as you walk in, and two theaters (one downstairs, one upstairs). The theaters are small and have the typical seats. I sat in the front section when I saw Wicked and it didn't feel too close at all, it honestly felt immersive. The parking tip: they share the lot with Walgreens right next to it so you can get free parking there. read more

The strangest layout and not the best seats. I went here for a free advanced screening so I was really excited to try this theater. It shares a parking lot with Walgreens and has a lot across the street for free parking. When you first walk in the lobby is right there. Very little and their are staircases on either side that lead up to the theaters. The concessions girl was nice and told me to head on up :) She also asked if I wanted anything before. They only have two sizes for popcorn. Small or large. I got a large. It was $11/12. I went upstairs to wait to be let into the theater. When they let us in I couldn't help but notice this theater was extremally small. The seats were so close together and not in a good way. Very packed/cramped. I heard other around us complain a little too. I understand that some theaters keep their old seats cause it's part of the theme or charm or history of the theater but this theater could defiently use an upgrade on seats and still keep the charm/theme of Mayan in the lobby. I do love free parking and the staff were all friendly and kind! But I don't know if I would go back to this location anytime soon only cause the seats are not comfortable and who wants to sit in an uncomfortable seat for 1.5 hours? read more

This neighborhood gem is a priceless reminder of days gone by. It's beautiful inside and out, and the seats are reasonably comfortable. The larger theater is downstairs with two smaller ones upstairs. The concessions have a nice variety and the bar upstairs is always a treat. I had some time to kill in Denver while visiting from out of town so I decided to catch a movie. I noticed this theater is operated by Landmark which is always promising because Landmark is one of the few chains that cares about preserving cinema culture. Needless to say, I was really happy I chose this theater. It's an old school movie house which is always a joy: the architecture is beautiful and it just has a certain charm you don't get very often anymore. Sure -- the seats don't recline, they don't serve cheeseburgers at your seat, and the sound won't rattle your bones, but sometimes you don't need that. The service was great -- it was nice to buy a ticket and my concessions at the same time. The movie I saw was in an upstairs almost balcony setup which was honestly a nice change of pace because it felt private and personal. It's worth noting, as someone who lives in a larger body, that the seats are on the smaller side, so if you're a bigger person this theater might not be the most accessible. That said, I was comfortable during the film's runtime. A nice addition at this theater is the upstairs bar which had alcoholic offerings; I didn't partake, but it's a good thing to note for the future. I did order concessions and the popcorn wasn't mind-blowing, but I still felt satisfied (and they went so far as to put butter in the middle and the top without asking which is always the sign of a pro). I can't wait to come back to Denver so I can see a movie in the main auditorium -- I peeked inside when I was leaving and it looks like a grand opera house! read more

I'm going with three stars. Neat old theatre I went to decades ago and visited again recently. Minus one star for hearing the sound of another movie through the (thin) walls. Minus another for the terrible audience tonight- talking during previews, lady dropped her metal water bottle three times, woman behind me bumping my seat. The Mayan is a pretty cool-looking theater. Looks like there's a lot of history here. It's a small place, but I prefer those more than the big, overdone, large chains. And I prefer the types of movies shown at the smaller places, as well. You can buy your ticket and the booth in front in with windows facing the street, old-school style. Or sometimes, you just go inside to buy them if they don't have that extra body. They sell the typical movie snacks but also alcoholic beverages. And there is a second, bigger bar upstairs. If you haven't been, check it out. For eats & drinks before or after any show, The Hornet is a few steps away, just make sure they're open. read more

What a cool theater! There was plenty of free parking in the lot in back (by Walgreens). You get your ticket outside (at least that's how it was when I was there). Then you can get your refreshments inside. The architecture is very interesting. My only improvement area would be that there weren't cupholders in the seats. read more

The Mayan Theatre is a classic venue on Broadway featuring some small indie and some big films coupled with small theatre charm. The popcorn is amazing and there is a bar on the second floor for libations. The theatres are cozy and it really makes for a great movie watching experience. You can pre-purchase tickets or buy them there. I wish they were a venue during UMS weekend because it would be awesome to see some bands there! Pro-tip: you can scope out the trailers ahead of time on their website. read more

I love this charming old theatre!! It is so nostalgic and intimate. I saw a movie there for the first time last week and only wish I had arrived a little earlier to enjoy a drink in their bar. These old theatre's must not be super sound proofed because at one point we did hear a scene from the movie next door, but we just laughed it off. I've walked by Mayan Theatre so many times and thought how cool of a building it was! I can now confirm that the inside is just as cool. My husband and I decided to go to the Mayan to check out the Oscar live action short films. We're hoping to go back again this week to also check out the animation short films. Staff were nice, wasn't busy at all since we went at 4:30 on a Friday, and had some lovey buttery popcorn. What more can you ask for?! read more

This is a nice theater. The whole vibe is different than anything else in Denver, you just have to see it for yourself. They show lots of indie movies which can be kind of hit-or-miss. I've seen 2 movies here so far. One was terrible and the other was excellent so I recommend doing a little research before deciding what to see (unless you just want to be surprised like me lol). $10 per show right now so not bad read more

I love this theater so much. First and foremost, it's beautiful, historic, and culturally relevant. It's one of the country's three remaining theaters designed in the Art Deco Mayan Revival style. It opened in 1930! The art inside is gorgeous. They show arthouse, foreign, and indie films. I just went to see the 2019 Oscar nominated shorts there. The tickets are reasonably priced and can be purchased online. Complimentary water by the concession area. There is a bar upstairs which I haven't even had a chance to check out yet. The only negative? Not the most comfortable seating. The seats are pretty cramped (minimal legroom) but hey, this is an old theater. I recommend sitting closer to the front -- I could be wrong but it felt like there was more legroom up there. read more

This theater is phenomenal! I love art deco. I m not an expert, but this theater seems to be well preserved! I loved the fact that one of the managers briefly talked about the director and he kindly asked us to silence our phones. It definitely felt more personal than the recorded announcement/message in other theaters. The only negative aspect is that the seats dont have enough legroom. But how many times you get the chance to see a movie within Art deco walls? I hope every week :) read more

Great little theater located in Southwest broadway. This was my first experience at The Mayan Theater. The ticket booth outside was charming and walking in takes you away to the 1900's. The Mayan has 3 theaters and shows independent film and foreign language films. The decor was nice and a step back in time, I believe it was restored at some point. I went to see The Lighthouse and met my friend in the upstairs lounge. The food stand was located directly in front of the main doors and there was a bar and seating upstairs. The bartenders Sunday afternoon at 4:30 were very personable and fun to talk too. There was a decent selection of beer and a few basic wines as well as mixed drinks. The theater was clean and the seats were of general comfort. The lights never fully went out and there was a nice warm glow throughout the movie. I will definitely be back for more films at The Mayan! read more

The Mayan is a neat historic theatre with solid seating, friendly staff, and independent films offerings. Honestly, my favorite thing about it is the size of the screens and volume which movies are played. I love that you can actually see the whole screen and not feel like you're leaving with hearing damage. I caught a movie with my daughter on Monday night. It's been a while since we've done that. We were there to see Licorice Pizza. The Mayan, to me, is part of old school Denver. The theater was busy but the staff kept the lines moving quickly and were super friendly. The Mayan is one of the Landmark theaters that is a vintage haunt in Denver. It's a historic building that's had the interior historic details preserved over the years. There is a parking lot on Lincoln that you can park in so you don't have to worry about feeding the meter. You can get the regular movie goer choices of popcorn, candy and soda etc.. or head to the full bar and imbibe while catching your flick. Are the seats super premium? No. Is the sound quality the same as the big chain theaters? No.. but that's not what you come here for. You come to catch the artsy movies, documentaries and such that don't get played at other theaters. You come for the ambiance and permission to get totally sucked into a storyline. You come to support art and old school Denver. This visit to the Mayan reminded me that I need to go more often! Cheers. read more

This is the best theater in Denver. (All the Landmark Theaters are great though.) You can enjoy booze, indie films, hip knowledgeable staff... and patrons who are film enthusiasts. It's an historic building with unique structure and decor which contribute to the urban indie experience. It seems like it's the flagship of the local Landmark theaters because the biggest indie releases hit here first. How do I love the Mayan? Let me count the ways! I'm excited every time I get to see that neon sign out front and the theaters inside feel just as historic, quirky and unique. Yes, the seats are old and yes, the upstairs theaters are quite cramped, but to me, this is just added charm. Mostly what I love about this theater (and all the Landmark theaters), is that it feels run by film enthusiasts. The bartender will chat with you about the movie you're seeing, the manager will give a little speech before it starts and it all feels so real and genuine. Being able to grab a drink beforehand it just an added bonus. read more

I absolutely love this theatre. You can't help but be enveloped by its past. It looks, feels, and smells historic -- you've gotta go for yourself and read up on its history. Pretty fascinating stuff. Built in 1930 and restored in the 80s, its Mayan theme is original and incredible. So gaudy and detailed and fun. It's a little distracting within the theatre... trying to watch an indie or foreign film and you've got a bunch of giant Mayan faces staring angrily at you. It's so great! They only have like 2 or 3 films showing at a time here, it's pretty tiny. No complaints from me though, I love the eccentric atmosphere and the quality movies they play. I saw "Carol" here recently and had the best time. I love the vintage concession stand, and they have good wine/beer options and plenty of buttery popcorn. $11 for a standard adult ticket! read more

The Mayan is a fun 3 screen Indie theatre off Broadway street, one of those theaters every city needs. With the ticket booth outside and stewards, hostesses assuring customers, and a manager providing a prelude summary of the movie/director prior to the films start, it's a flash back to older movie going experiences. By no means are they putting on an "old fashioned" show, however, those old fashioned elements make the Mayan experience exist. On the second floor there is a bar and a seating area , with the walls and ceiling decorated like a Mayan temple--soft reds and faded greens on the parrot and Indian carvings. The film room itself is cozy and small. Perhaps too small as myself 6'0" and other taller people had to shift their legs to the left or right, or overhang on chairs in front or in the walkways because the seats are packed in there--it's permissible given the small theatre , however it is probably my one issue with the Mayan. We saw a film that was already on RedBox, which is okay because we wanted the Mayan experience. The crowd laughed together and you could sense we were all in the movie together--apparently the small theatre size makes the event more of a group feeling than a mind-your-own-business mainstream theatre. Overall the Mayan was a good time and I'd recommend it to try something different, or do something special. read more

I'm always saddened when old historic theaters are shuttered, so I was overjoyed to see The Mayan was still up and operating during my recent trip to Denver. What a beauty! Not only is it still going strong, they have kept it well maintained, with a art deco-meets-Central American styling in bold colors, red velvet curtains, and sculpted Mayan warrior heads lining the walls of the main theater downstairs. (missed getting a pic - damn!) My sister and I caught a flick in one of the smaller theaters upstairs. At the second level, I was pleasantly surprised to see they had a full bar. Being a chilly night, I HAD to get an Irish coffee. Their rendition had both Irish Whiskey and a touch of Bailey's; Delicious! It was the perfect theater experience, and the cost was comparable to other megaplex theaters (you know, the ones without any character). I'll be back if I can possibly help it. read more

"The miracle of SoBo" this is truly a Denver treasure, magnificently restored and loved. As a theater it is wonderful, as a piece of architecture, it is fantastical, with soaring ceilings, haunting frescoes, Spanish Art Deco that is , appropriately enough, theatrical and borderline comical. Built in 1930 when grandiose architecture was designed to make theaters a place to escape the mundane. Imagine the spectacle of walking into a palatial theater before television and being enveloped by this grandeur! The main auditorium is fantastic, but even the original ticket office has its own appeal. Truly, the theater upstages any movie. And speaking of movies, Tuesday features The Mayan's own local film festival, where they celebrate the works of great directors or actors! So great. read more

Finally after living in the Denver area for 12 years I made it to the Mayan theatre. Yay for the great movies they show (and excited for many more from the previews I saw). I didn't expect to pay the big theatre price for the movie I saw since I knew the theatre was old school, but since the movie wasn't being shown everywhere....okay I get it. Popcorn was tasty and fresh (and I normally don't purchase, but hadn't had a chance to eat before the movie). Great selection of gourmet chocolate bars, Honest T, and a bar up stairs to order a drink (although I wouldn't order a drink to take into the movie....no room. Now the theatre...now while the décor was cool and brought me to my childhood I will agree...seating is uncomfortable and cramped and since our movie was on the second floor...very stuffy and was warm (although they did turn up the AC since a worker heard my friend complain about the heat...Thanks guys). Sound was not stellar so did really have to concentrate on what the actors were saying with their Bronx accents. I will probably be here again to see a movie that you can't see anywhere else since they show great stuff and as someone pointed out there won't be a lot of kids in there interrupting your show since it is definitely a more mature crowd. read more

Probably the first time I've had to climb stairs before getting to the theater itself, the Mayan provided a very unique experience on my recent trip to Denver. It was everything you'd expect from an 80 year old art-deco theater with full bar. There was plenty of detail in the building itself to look at before the movie started, and it was happy hour so beer was cheaper than soda (which made that choice easy). Finally the spot I picked out for myself in the nearly empty theater - it was 4pm on a Thursday in a Sylvain Chomet film - kind of made me feel like I was in on some kind of secret. Ultimately a Great Divide Samurai and an Oscar-nominated animated film makes for my kind of theater. So there I perched, in a row with so little leg room I was thankful for my short stature. I kicked off my shoes and propped my feet up on the ledge overlooking the entrance. Even tucked away in the corner, I felt a camaraderie with the other theatergoers, like 'how lucky are we all to be enjoying this place together?' Definitely unique. read more

The Mayan's tag line of sorts is "enjoy a movie with your beer" or something along those lines and for some reason I have always found that hilarious. Every time I drive by and see it I sort of giggle to myself. Anyway, I really like seeing movies at the Mayan for lots of reasons. One of which is that they do indeed serve alcohol which always makes the movie watching a little more interesting. People aren't so uptight when they are drinking adult beverages so there's more laughter or gasping or reacting to movies in general. Since I'm not one of the shushing types I enjoy that to no end. They also have a beautiful interior and play lots of great films. But, the theaters aren't that big so more popular releases sell out pretty quickly when they first come out. Other than that the only complaint is that the seats are sometimes a little too close for comfort, making my knees hit the seat in front of me in certain rows. And I'm only 5"7' so there just isn't a lot of leg room. I suggest going early if you're very tall to get the most comfortable seat possible. read more

I may have a bit of an attention span deficit, but there is a moment every time I go to the Mayan Theater in which I completely tune out the movie. I check out the decor and the carvings. I people watch, because the Mayan often attracts a special breed. I see what people bought from the concessions, and find the inevitable person who brought in their own booze. After this small blip I focus on the movie again. The Mayan tends to have a perfect blend of almost-mainstream films and more obscure independent gems. I agree with a lot of the other reviews, the seats in the upstairs theaters are cramped. My knees sympathized with what Bob Barker must have felt like after a millennium of hosting The Price is Right. I may not be able to walk here from my place in Wash Park, but I see many a bike ride in my future this summer as I pass under the blazing neon sign beckoning me into a pre-Columbian good time. read more

I love these old theaters. They are not the new, shiny, Dolby sound, stadium seating, mega refreshment stand ones that proliferate nowadays. The seating is old style, there is a balcony, you buy your ticket from an outside box office, the refreshment stand is about 8 feet long, the lobby is small and the interior is rich with design and architectual features. Reminds me of the theaters of my kidhood and many throughout Europe. The popcorn is still great , the screen is big, the sound is good; you also may have someone behind you bounce their knees off of your seat, but what the heck. These theaters will not be coming back, no one will build them like this again and once they are all torn down and become a new shopping mall or theme store, they will be just a memory....ah nostalgia ! Anyway, the Mayan mostly shows films that are not yet in mass release, it is a delight to sit in the splendor that was once the standard for movie goers. read more

What a fantastic place to see a film! The concession stand was being manned by the manager and he shared a little of the history while serving us our snacks. (Yummy popcorn and tasty bar drinks.) I really like when people take such pride in their work, and that set the tone for our evening. We were in one of the upstairs theaters - probably 20 feet across, so you definitely want to be there with people you like. The coziness of the seating, the independent films, and the general ambiance of the building made for a great experience. read more

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this theatre! When I first heard about the Mayan I was excited to find a place that played independent films that are hard to find other places. However, when you go in you'll find so much more! The building itself is gorgeous, right off Broadway with so much liveliness around you (however, because of the popularity of Broadway parking can be a pain- just FYI). There's a bar on the top floor surrounded by some cool paintings and awesome architecture. Go grab a drink and talk with John, he'll give you the incredible history of the Mayan as well as give you an honest opinion about the movie you're seeing. He's very knowledgable about movies, and genuinely cares about the guests having a great experience there. read more
