We were in town to check out the Spam museum, Lunch time, never been to Austin before - opened up Yelp & Maya Restaurant reviews won us over, Very authentic food, woman working here was very sweet, great service. I over hear another patron here saying how much he loved the food, reminds him of autentice food he got back home in San Diego. I ordered a lunch special, 2 tacos & 2 sides I picked beans & rice. I asked for sour cream for the tacos. Hubbie had the nachos off the appetizer menu, huge, large pieces of veggies, he really liked them. I'd go back if ever in town! The prices are thrifty and the food is always tasty. This is a popular place for lunch, as service is generally quick and pleasant. In Austin for work and needed to grab a later dinner. Qdoba was right by my hotel but I knew there were some authentic Mexican restaurants, and Maya did not disappoint! A delicious burrito, perfectly done carnitas inside. Took a little more than 5 min to get my food. The woman working at the counter was so nice too! I was really excited for my meal as I was eating my chips and salsa. The salsa is excellent. My husband ordered the steak and shrimp platter. The steak was so tough that he couldn't eat it. I've never seen the man leave any kind of steak on his plate. My burrito was better. I ordered the one with grilled chicken and shrimp. The tomato that topped it was the palest pinkish white unripe tomato. The soda machines overflow trough was completely filled with water and clogged so an employee came out with a bucket an bailed water out it. It looked like a regular practice. And last but not least everything was a little "sticky". Could use a good wipe down. We also were only given one set of silverware and had to ask for another. read more

I first tried Maya Taqueria about a week or two after it opened, and I wasn't super impressed. As is often the case with new restaurants, sometimes it take a while to hit a stride. Unfortunately, it took me far to long to try it again, because I learned that I've missed out on a couple of years of great food! This time I ate off the dinner menu, but I'm already looking forward to returning for lunch and ordering from the Taqueria menu. Although I'm not expert in Mexican food, I did appreciate that the food was fresh, not over cooked or covered with too much cheese, was plentiful, and not overly greasy. I especially liked the salsa, which was full of lovely and bright cilantro. Service was excellent and I look forward to going back. Each of the four people in my part was impressed! read more

Best tacos and salsa roja in town. They have a good assortment including a great al pastor. If you ask, they typically have Jarritos as well. Do yourself a favor and pair your meal with a tamarindo flavored one. Great family owned and operated business and food, dine in or carry out. read more
