We had 5 people in from out of town and we wanted to set up a dolphin tour. In the past, I'd done the Captain Mark tour from Shelter Cove and another dolphin tour out of Sea Pines. Here's why this is the best---- We were able to book this reservation online and pay for it complete with tip. It was totally refundable if the weather was bad. There were seven of us including 2 children as we waiting for our 3:30 pick up at the Calhoun Street dock. The folks at May River Excursions called to make sure we were there since we didn't stop by their offices. Out of nowhere came Captain Austin zipping along the river to gather us on the dock. We were very happy it was a covered boat, although small. It could probably hold 10 adults, but 7 was fine for this trip. We head out towards HHI passed Palmetto Bluffs. We were provided some area history during the trip while we saw dozens of dolphins. We were able to get some great pics and video with the dolphins jumping in the background. Everyone had a great time. Very relaxing on the May River----------until it got closer to 5 pm return time. Captain Austin opened her up and gave us a nice ride back to the docks. Forget the other HHI boat tours-----this is the only one you need to work with. read more

I cannot recommend this company and experience highly enough. We have been 4x (with different visiting friends and family members) and every time it is a delight. Gorgeous landscape and wildlife and the dolphins abound. The Captain is very knowledgable about wildlife and history of the area and tailors his tour to his audience. Last time (this past week) he brought River and Marsh (his two golden retrievers) and it was magical. They are relaxed, sweet boat dogs who never failed to spot the dolphins before we did. I booked a private sunset cruise for just me and my wife. The booking process was easy. Freddie was our captain. He showed up right on time and was very friendly and knowledgeable. We are still somewhat new to the area, so we were very interested in learning more about the history of Bluffton. Freddie was tremendous in answering all of our questions and did a great job navigating the waters as we continuously watched dolphins playing and feeding. We booked our 90 minute blue crabbing trip here for fall break (end of October) so our Elementary aged kids would have a great first experience with a knowledgeable guide. The check in process was quick and easy, our boat and guide arrived on time and everything was great. Captain Buddy was the perfect guide for our young kids on their first trip. He was extremely knowledgeable about all the local animals, areas, birds, etc. He was an excellent teacher and we caught 14 crabs in 1 hour. He then took us to a close sandbar on the river and helped my kids find 20+ sharks teeth and pointed out other living and fossilized items as well. We left super excited and will definitely be back! Took the 1.5 hour May River Ecology Boat Ride. Capt. Fred was excellent! He was personable and Knowledgable about the river, the wildlife and the local history. We saw dolphin and he pulled a crab trap to show us how it works and there were blue claw crabs inside. Great way to see Bluffton from the river. read more

I went out with captain Austin and we caught two fish. The bugs were terrible that morning, and in the middle of the trip we had to go catch more bait because he didn't have enough. The boat was in poor shape, Austin was often on his phone, and was making remarks that we wore shorts that day. It seemed like Austin eventually ran out of spots and just started taking us to random places. We were supposed to go out with Capt. Chris the day before, but it got rained out, and he didn't tell us we were going with Austin. read more

We had a guide this morning and we caught 2 fish in 4 hours. The bugs were horrible and it was cold. Our guide was often on his phone and ran out of spots. On the middle of our trip we have to go get more bait. This was a rough experience. Not Worth It! Our guide was Captain Austin. read more

We had an AMAZING time this morning on a crabbing excursion with May River Tours! Austin was our guide and he was fantastic. We had 6 adults and a 1.5 and 3.5 year old and everyone felt safe and comfy the entire time, even with the cooler temps. We caught a bunch of blue crab, we learned a TON about wildlife on the island and Bluffton in general and as a bonus - we had an up close encounter with a dolphin, saw many bald eagles, and caught some puffer fish in the crab traps (but of course, threw them back). My 3.5 year old nephew is still talking and asking about Austin 8 hours later....he was honestly such a great guide and we loved him! Actually, his grandfather owns a market/restaurant called Cahill's just down the road from here. We talked about it on the boat and decided to go there for lunch and it was delicious!!! I would highly recommend this tour to others, in fact we already did to some friends visiting next week! We will come back here next year and do it again 100%! read more

Bought a Groupon for six and had a very pleasant excursion. Unfortunately we were not properly instructed on how to keep the crabs alive and a dinner for six that was planned with the 15 crabs we caught was aborted because all of the crabs had died while in the cooler on ice between the time we caught them and 5 PM when we were planning to do the cooking. Called May River to explain what had happened and was just offered an apology nothing else. read more

We went on a crabbing excursion with Caption Matt. It was SO much fun! He taught us about the crabs and crabbing. We hand crabbed and then checked a couple of traps he had previously set. We saw some of the dolphins who live in the river. I would definitely go back and would recommend this trip to anyone of any age. read more

We went on a 2-hour crabbing trip on 10/14/16. Capt. Chris said it was their first trip out after Hurricane Matthew. But we caught a bunch of big blues! Was so much fun we returned the next day for fishing. Lots of red drum, a few black drum and a trout finished off with a few big shrimp. Incredible way to spend a morning touring the water. Matt was a great host and gave us a variety of sights, sounds, and experiences. We caught crab with with a line, and from a trap and caught more shrimp than we could eat that night. Beautiful way to tour the river. My husband and I went to Hilton Head SC for our honeymoon. My husband wanted to fish while we were there and he searched the internet and found Captain Chris and May River Excursions in Bluffton. We called and met Chris on May 17th 2017. We wanted to do a private fishing excursion but not pay an outrageous amount. The reviews we read were right about Captain Chris. We had an amazing 2 hour fishing adventure and I did not get sick with motion sickness. LOL I did not know what we were getting ourselves into that day but it was absolutely amazing. Chris fishes for his own bait and then we spent the afternoon fishing and caught/released 9 Bonnet head Shark. Chris allows you to get a comfort level with what you are catching. My husband handled the shark himself with Chris helping to take off the hook and my husband putting them back in the water. We saw crab while we fished and saw dolphins on the way back to shore. Chris turned the boat around when he saw the dolphins so we could get a good look and take pictures. Chris is very patient t and knows the waters in that area. My husband and I were afraid of spending money on fishing and not catch anything. Chris did not disappoint us. He made sure I caught a shark too and took pictures for us while I caught one. It was an amazing afternoon and will do it again the next time we visit Hilton Head/Bluffton SC. read more
