My boyfriend and I went on a "Let's see where we end up" driving adventure and found ourselves in Clitheroe at lunch time. Neither of us had been here before so we wandered around trying to find somewhere to eat. The boy had decided he wanted a "grilled sandwich in a nice pub." This proved difficult as Clitheroe wasn't exactly pumping on a Sunday afternoon and most of the pubs appeared either closed or didn't sell food. We eventually found one, sat down, and then quietly snuck out as I pointed across the road to Maxwells Cafe Wine Bar that looked significantly better and less likely to be serving microwaved food.
The menu was extensive with lots of sandwiches, salads and hearty dishes to choose from and we both chose a falafel wrap with halloumi and hummus (not sure where the grilled sandwich demand went.) We were seated at a table for two in a bit of an awkward corner but the place was buzzing with families out for Sunday lunch. The clientele appeared to range in ages from 0-99 - everyone was there. Clearly this is a local favourite.
We were given cutlery by a waiter who perhaps should have cleaned and dried his hands properly before handling our knives and forks. However everyone was very friendly and it was a nice relaxed atmosphere. The food was good too although we were both a little puzzled by the curry flavoured hidden amongst the falafel. It didn't taste bad - it just wasn't particularly authentic. The wraps were served with a small side salad, coleslaw and raita. These were served in individual ramekins that were hot so the salads were being slowly heated up. Overall it was good value for money and very tasty. read more
