    Milngavie

Outdoor seating is available. Both covered and uncovered. The staff is phenomenal. Very attentive. Great teamwork. Everyone makes eye contact and greets you. The food was amazing. It was done so quick and completely fresh. Those skinny fries you see with the Buffalo Mac and blue cheese, is classified as a side item. So much! The fish and chips were cooked perfectly. The batter is light, crispy and the fish is fresh and moist.

So, I've emerged from Yelp semi-retirement for this sole purpose: to share the retro-fabulous…read moredeliciousness of Finsbay with you, the world. When a delightfully longer-than-anticipated lie-in thwarted our plans for a lunch-time south-side soujern, we decided to stay closer-to-home (read: within a 0.5mile radius) and finally try the lovely dog-friendly cafe/bar/restaurant we'd spied when first making the move west to Milngavie a couple of weeks ago. From the moment we walked in to excited cooing over the pup (which quickly escalated to doggy water bowls and a piled plate of doggy-heaven sausage), took in the effortlessly chic retro-inspired interiors - a wall mural of retro telephones and a converted retro tv fish bowl?!? YES PLEASE! - and wrapped our mitts around the handle of a glass tankard, we just knew we'd found our new local. With our pints of West Brewery lager in hand, we fawned over the surprisingly well-priced cafe-bar menu full of fun, modern-Scottish twists. The Light Bites, salads and sandwiches were immediately saliva-inducing but neither Lisa nor I could resist the Croque menu... me the Stornaway Black Pudding (yes, you read that correctly) and Lisa, the classic Croque Monsieur; each with the chef's own béchamel sauce. As if I wasn't already courting a coronary - I added a bowl of chunky chips; Lisa the chunky sweet potato chips. Our pal Laureen opted for the 6oz beer battered fish, chunky chips, peas and tartare for £6.50 (an upgrade to 8oz fish is +£1.50). Wow. Just wow. I'm an Eater from way back and - honestly - I'm typing this 6hrs later and still haven't even the slightest urge for dinner. The Croque was INSANELY good and the chunky chips, some of the best I've had. The combination of black pudding and buttered leeks was outstanding offset beautifully by top-quality Arran Cheddar. Lisa's Monsieur was perfectly translated: A-grade bread, proper Gruyere cheese and super-tender baked ham that just melted in the mouth. Laureen's fish'n'chips a beer-battered, white-fleshy-and-deliciously-flaky-fish triumph. And, those chips. Whether you're a Milngavie and surrounds local or up for an easy train jaunt (there's also loads of handy parking at Tesco or behind M&S) I wholeheartedly recommend checking out Finsbay. Warm, welcoming and altogether super cool, we couldn't have picked a better place to show-off Glasgow's dining delights to our London pal. With a monthly Gin club, open mic nights, special events and a cocktail list of dreams, we'll see you there.

With everywhere closing…read morefairly early out at Anniesland this is one of the few places that remains lively beyond dark - which is both good and bad. It can attract a few idiots who treat it as shelter as they await their train from Anniesland train station (right beside) but it means there is somewhere to go when you're craving some unhealthy fast food. My dad was always desperate to pop in when visiting my flat and did so on the day I moved out (his treat after I watched him carrying my stuff down three flights of stairs...I jest, I helped...with the light things). He raved about the fish and chips. I came once late at night, starving after a concert, and as the only sober person in there the guys working behind the counter struck up a convo with me. Their friendly chat and lovely service would be enough to make me return. A much-loved and needed chipp in the area.

It's particularly handy…read moregiven this is an area massively devoid of such eating out options, although it can be a tad annoying when people pop in en route to Anniesland train station and duly stink out the train with a fish supper. It's a minor gripe though and not enough to dilute the fact if it weren't for this Italian/Scottish eaterie you may well be forced to have something healthy as a late night snack.

It eventaully appeared, after more than forty minutes. It was hot, but there wasn't much meat on the three pieces of chicken. So disappointing, and the batter was bland and very soft. The shop was occupied by noisy and unpleasant kids, who shouted and swore a lot. I wouldn't mind - these things happen - but after half an hour or so it gets waring. The unsmiling staff were unapologetic for the wait I had, and the error in pricing. Nobody said 'please' or 'thank you' at any stage. I wouldn't have hung about for forty minutes for a meal in a restaurant, but then, I was stupid enough as to pay up front. This used to be a very good fish and chip shop a few years ago, though it has obviously changed hands, and for the worse. I am not ever going back, and I shall warn all my friends to avoid this place. Sorry. Sorry I went there, that is. Captaintryps

They do a good range of different suppers, plus a kids menu with lovely chicken nuggets made out of fresh chicken breast. They also do all the usual drinks and mussels and ketchup etc. This is a good shop overall, and the wait isn't a big issue, but I wish they would put more salt and vinegar on the chips as they are can be quite tasteless, despite being delightfully light.
