2019 update: Maury is my favorite sports massage masseuse of all time. She took the time to sit down with me, talk about my goals, and which parts of my body were holding me back. She worked on those areas then left me with homework. Shes helped me postural sitting-at-a-desk too long issues, as well as improved my performance at rock climbing. Simply put, Maury is a phenomenal massage therapist who deeply understands the bodies and psyches of athletes (and us former athletes who mess ourselves up by sitting at desks all day...) She's like a cross between a physical therapist, coach/trainer, and Professor of Kinesiology, all wrapped together with an intuitive touch and lovely personality. I first got a massage from Maury after another massage therapist messed up my back, leaving me unable to fall asleep from the pain. Maury worked through the inflammation and taught me how to recognize when a deep massage starts getting TOO deep. (Is this a problem for anyone else? Like, where it's hard to tell if it's a good hurt or a bad hurt during a massage?) Even when I see other massage therapists, I use a trick that Maury taught me to give me the confidence to ask for the therapist to decrease their pressure (or to ask for more while being mindful of my limit.) Maury is great for a relaxing massage, but really shines if you are trying to get the most out of your body. As an athlete herself (ran track, was in the Army, still plays soccer in a competitive league), she just totally understands the crazy stuff people push themselves to do and knows how to nurse you back to health -- and, probably more importantly, how to help you avoid injuries in the first place. For example, I was telling Maury that I had started getting into running again, and I couldn't understand why my lower back was hurting. She watched me run a bit and then gave me a few pointers that have totally erased the back pain -- and increased my ab definition :) In short, Maury is a baller. Highly recommend! read more

Maury is an excellent masseuse - she gives excellent feedback throughout the massage to help you relax and really feel the benefits of her work. She makes a real effort before the massage starts to understand your body and where you need the most work. Too many massage therapists are focused on getting to every part of your body in the hour they have to work with you - Maury understands maybe its just your upperback that needs the most attention and plans accordingly. She helped me breath more deeply and effortlessly so that I could get the maximum benefit and really relax my muscles. I went to Maury's massage in search of reducing accute pain in my back. I injured my back the night before at the House of Air after someone double jumped on me. My back basically got whiplashed and I had a hard time walking... When I got to her home studio which is located next to her house, she was already outside waiting for me to come in. Couple of reviewers mentioned dogs in their reviews but when I was there, there was no sight or sound of dogs... Her studio was clean, quiet, cozy and very calming. It was slightly cold at first in the studio but once I got under the electric blancket, I was comfy and ready to relax and ease my throbbing pain. Maury started asking routine questions about the injury as well as history of injury. I am an athlete and used to play tennis quite often in my teen, and early-mid twenties, so I told her my lower back problem I had for a long time. Because Maury is also an athlete herself, she was very understanding and cauciously listening to each information I gave her. Now, the actual session begins.... Maury carefully avoided the area of injury and worked around it. Because it was such a recent injury(the night before) and it was still very inflamed, so she told me it was better not to work on the spot right away. Do not worry readers, I was compensating other parts of my body, so my whole body was pretty much sore. Maury's got the touch! She asks me how deep I would like, and I said "DEEP!" However, she stops going deeper at the point where she thinks is deep enough, so I won't be hurting later. I was impressed. I got many massages in my days, and some goes way too deep to a degree it actually turns into PAIN, or some couldn't just go deep enough. She just got it right. Over all, Maury thoroughly worked on different parts of the body. She also kindly told me which part of my muscle is tense which helped me understand my pain a lot. (I like to know what's wrong and why it's so painful...curious george type =) When it was done, I was much more relaxed and felt better. She directed me to take it easy(and do not engage in physical activity)...and my boyfriend was there and he made sure we won't stop by anywhere to run errand...or do stuff at home. I was made sure to rest and be a couch potato for the night =) At the end of the session, Maury told me I could come back in the few days, so she could actually work on the actual injured part. So I did. Result?? Same quality session. This time, she focused on my lower back. It was very interesting to me because not only Maury can tell how much more my muscle was relaxed and so did I. After my session, I felt much better, and within few days, I was able to engage in sports, walking and bicycling. I am very happy customer and especially if you are an athlete looking for a relief from sports related injury, I'd definitely recommend Maury. I've had hip/lower back/upper back/thigh/shoulder pain for years now. Most masseuses I've been too, and physical therapists, don't know what really could be causing it, haven't seemed to have good ideas about how to treat it. Maury is very skilled and understand anatomy very well. She put her hands on me and could tell where areas were holding tension and out of alignment and was not just good at relieving the tension but had good ideas about what I can do on my own to relieve it as well. Soccer and tennis were my favorite sports, which also resulted in some unfavorable injuries. Knee pains, dislocated shoulder and knee, and a crooked spine from my Yellow Power Ranger days equal to all kinds of bad. So after months of hearing my complaints my girlfriend suggested I schedule an appointment for a massage from Maury. I must be lucky because I've only had two professional massages and both times felt amazing walking out. Maury asked me about all my current conditions and asked about my active lifestyle, I made a point in telling her that I've accrued a lot of brokeness due to sports injuries. Already an athlete herself, she knew exactly what to do. If you're looking to get some soreness out and get back into your tennis game, cycling, or just finished a marathon, call Maury. As for her studio, it's a nice quiet little cottage outside her residence. Very quiet, secluded, and private, it had a wonderful atmosphere. I visited Maury couple weeks ago and was very impressed with the massage experience she offered. Tucked away beautifully in the back of her house is a private sanctuary where she perfects her crafts. The comfortable space makes you feel right at home with the sun light crashing onto the table and the tranquil scent of aroma being dispersed through out the air. She took time to evaluate the needs and problems areas; as well as making suggestions on treatment along the way. She comes from an athlete's background so had amazing understanding of how problems should be diagnosed and treated. I had tension in my back and she pay detailed attention, easing into the trouble spots. The experience in itself was sheer bliss, after the session, I felt like a new man. First, a disclosure: I met Maury in massage school last year. That said, I booked my first full-body massage with her earlier this month -- and she was great! What I really like about Maury's work is that she communicates well (not overly talkative, but checks in throughout the session), and has a good quality of touch. At one point the pressure was right at my edge -- kind of intense, and I'm pretty sensitive so it doesn't take much. Maury noticed right away that something was off, and asked if the pressure was too much. When I told her it was, she re-adjusted immediately, and went with less pressure. I really appreciate it when a massage therapist notices these things! It makes me feel like they're really paying attention to what they're doing, and respecting my limits. (I had a massage once where the guy was determined to "work out the knots" even though it hurt! i was like, "no, it's ok, just leave the knots!") Maury practices out of a studio at her home. As another reviewer mentioned, she has dogs! So if you're allergic to or shy of dogs, it might not be the best for you. But if you LOVE dogs, then you'll get some puppy love, too. read more

I had a massage session with Maury yesterday afternoon. This morning, for the first time since I can remember, I woke up without any pain in my neck. I am so grateful to not be in any pain. I've had recurring neck pain for years and have tried many things to treat it-- from different types of massage, yoga, stretching, ice, and medicine. Maury not only gave me a great therapeutic massage, but she also gave me a few tips on how to keep my neck from becoming inflamed. Going to Maury's Massage is a great experience for many reasons: 1. Her home studio is beautiful. You immediately feel like you've entered a different world: It's warm, it smells great, it's beautiful, and it's peaceful. 2. Maury asks a ton of questions and welcomes feedback. If she's using too much pressure or not enough, let her know! I really appreciated that she wanted to know my specific preferences and certain areas that needed extra work. She was able to identify problem areas I didn't even know I had, which is obviously quite helpful! 3. I left having learned new things about my body that, as a dancer, I really appreciated. Maury's expansive knowledge of muscle systems and anatomy really enhanced my massage experience. 4. Though the whole body treatment was super, my face and feet felt especially amazing afterward! If you're someone who doesn't like communicating during a massage and want your masseuse to do all the work, I suppose Maury wouldn't be your gal. It's not a spa after all. I had a great experience with Maury. I was traveling this past week and developed a major muscle pain in my back. On a whim, I checked yelp looking for a 'serious' muscle guru in the mission (where I was while on a break from a work meeting) and found Maury. This was actually my first massage session ever! She asked many questions about my lifestyle and overall health and gave me a heads up on how she would be working through my problem with me. The massage was intense, targeted and very helpful. Maury is the best. She's helped me a few times when I've had injuries, especially with my feet and she's incredible at identifying and treating the actual source of the pain, which is often very different than I would have guessed. As the other reviewers have said, it's pretty incredible and very evident that she has an amazing understanding of the human body as well as incredible intuition and deduction that helps you learn what's causing whatever issue you're experiencing and how to avoid exacerbating them or repeating any mistakes. I came to Maury complaining of on-going hip pain and movement restrictions. Not only did she give me an awesome, targeted, deep tissue massage, but she also talked me through what she was feeling and explained which troubled muscles were contributing to my hip problems. First let me start by saying...go see Maury! Being new to San Francisco, my "to-do" list seemed never-ending...but finding a good masseuse was pretty high up there...so I set out to conquer this daunting task. I went to see Maury to work on the shoulder and back pain I have from a previous neck injury. She did an excellent job of listening to my requests while giving the right amount of feedback as to how she was going to address my problem areas. I definitely plan on going back to see her! Before we started, we had a 10 minute chat about my history and what my expectations were. She was very attentive and asked me a couple of questions while taking some notes. As the massage began, she eased into my troubled areas while checking in with me to make sure the pressure was not painful in any way. I gave her the thumbs up to give me her deepest massage and boy was I glad I did. She worked on my shoulder and back with the perfect amount of pressure that really worked my muscles without causing pain. I have had many massages in my day, but I have never had a masseuse give such helpful and knowledgeable feedback along the way. She clearly knows her anatomy and I found it really interesting to know what's going on inside my body to cause me pain...and more importantly, how she was going to fix it! After an hour long session, I felt a bit sore and fatigued, but not in an unpleasant way. We discussed how I would feel over the coming days and what I could do to help ease my everyday pain (stretching, changing posture, etc.) I left the session feeling much more relaxed and loose, and continued to feel the same way long after leaving her studio. Maury is an incredible Masseuse. I have had tons of shoulder pain & neck problems and she was able to find out exactly where they were leading too and work them out individually. It was fantastic to finally feel my pain go away! She has a great athletic background and completely understands everything that you mention to her. I've been to Maury several times for massage and recently bought two packages of five for a great discount. I guess I'm committed for a while. :-) If you like massage, it's definitely worth it to buy in bulk if you can pay it all at once. As others have mentioned, Maury is knowledgeable about anatomy and about body mechanics. She listens well and gives good tips for building better habits. Her massage technique is really one of the best I've had, and I've had many. She has a great sense of what is going on in your muscles and is always adjusting pressure accordingly. I did NOT have a pleasant experience. Matter of fact, I didn't even get a massage. I called this morning and scheduled for 3pm. She said that if I wanted a confirmation, I could email her. I didn't email her, well, because I didn't need a confirmation. She calls me at 2:36 pm to tell me that because she didn't receive an email from me, she filled my slot, and can't do my massage until 4. At this point, I was already on my way, so I had to turn back around and find new parking (which, by the way, is not an easy task in the city). I told her I didn't email because she NEVER said that not emailing means she would cancel my appt, or else I obviously would have emailed. She explained that she has a lot of people who call and schedule, but then never show. That's fine and I understand that, but the time to explain that to me isn't AFTER you've already canceled my appointment. That should have been explained in the original conversation. Also, when I told her it stinks because I already bought a Yelp deal from her, she said "well I'm pretty sure you can get your money back"... What kind of business is that? My other question is if she took the time to call me to tell me she went ahead and filled my slot- why couldn't she have called to confirm with me again that I was coming at 3 before just automatically filling my spot? Seems like that would have made a lot more sense. Overall- this lady just flat out did not care. She was nonchalant, and brushed my frustration off as if it was my fault, and she didn't even try to make it right. This is not good business ethics, and she most certainly will never get my business. read more

Maury was excellent and helped cure an ailing hamstring that other therapists could not. A great choice for athletes!

Let me start off by saying: this was my first professional massage. I compete in kickboxing, I play soccer, I run frequently, go hiking often, and the result of all this is that I am often a mess of sore muscle tissue. So, I am not the best person to rate the finer details of a professional massage, but THIS is for certain... it's going to be very difficult to go back to the brute force of my friends who try to crank out the sore muscles from kickboxing. Now that I know how soreness SHOULD be worked out, I am going to actually crave skilled hands to help my body recover from whatever i just put it through. It was nice to also hear some advice from her as well: she explained to me how tight some of my muscles were, and recommended I stretch certain areas so that I don't damage any muscles during training (welcome advice, as pulling muscles during training can be devastating). It's been a couple of weeks now since I got my massage from Maury, and at the time I had some large knots in my back and neck that were starting to cause problems. I opted for the intense, deep-tissue type massage to try and work things out a little bit, and I feel so much better! I'll second someone else's review that Maury is very good at finding just the right pressure to loosen up the muscles without so much that it's overly painful. She seemed very knowledgeable about the muscle groups in that area and would probably be great for any kind of sports therapy. Definitely recommend! read more

I came to Maury with severe pain from plantar fasciitis. I'd tried everything: doctor's visits, night splints, orthotic shoes.... nothing worked. A friend recommended Maury, and I am so glad she did. Finally I can walk on my feet without pain again. I'm in awe.
