I have been practicing yoga for years, and this was by far the worst yoga experience I've had. Deni made me feel so stupid on multiple accounts when I moved out of a pose because it was hurting or didn't feel right. So much for listening to my body. This was not a peaceful or enjoyable experience at all. She was very abrasive. I was very excited for class to be over. Not to mention I paid $33 for a drop-in which is the most expensive drop-in I've ever seen by far. read more

Deni is SO wonderful and precise! If you want to refine your poses and learn the best way to do them, she is the teacher for you. Her instruction is so detailed that she makes sure you & the others are benefiting from them the most. Even with a major injury she is able to help me use props to my benefit -- all part of Iyengar style of yoga. Be prepared to go inside, think and feel the poses. During our 5 day stay in wailea, we visited this wonderful yoga studio 4 times. 3/4 were for sunrise beach yoga and the last was restorative evening yoga. Deni, the owner and 30 plus year veteran of iyengar yoga is a gifted teacher. We didn't know what to expect so let's talk about iyengar 101. It's a form oriented type of yoga where props are used and the emphasis is on form and alignment. Poses can be held for quite a long time and it very different from a faster form of flow. Beach classes were iyengar like but because of challenges of being outside right by the beach, deni had to make modifications depending on the day. Ie day 1 was so windy we couldn't do down dogs or standing poses. We loved deni's instruction and how much she could tell what each of us needed to help our bodies and our practice. I feel like regular practice with deni would really help for me improve my posture and open up hips and other misalignments in my body. I've read some of the negative reviews on this studio and sadly these people simply didn't have an open mind and a desire to be present in the yoga and a desire to correct their form. FYI. Wonderful & educational practice this morning at Maui Yoga Path. The class style is Iyengar, which I had read ahead of time was the type they teach for 7 am beach yoga. The studio is easy to find and is underneath/behind the 5 Palms Restaurant with doors facing the water. I had checked ahead of time and was advised that drop ins are fine and to arrive about 10 minutes ahead of time. Lovely open studio (I could see the indoor classes being enjoyable.) For today, I was here to enjoy morning yoga outdoors. There were about 4 other students and we set up on the grass with mats, blocks and straps provided. All you need to bring is a towel and water. The instruction given and the corrections given to form & alignment were thoughtful, helpful and given with great intentions. I felt calmer and more balanced than I have in a while. With most of my yoga practice focusing on Vinyasa Flow, this was a much needed and welcome change-plus the scenery can't be bit, Keep an open mind and enjoy a slower paced morning class if you're in the Kihei area. It's $25 for drop ins or you can get a weekly pass. Free parking near the resort and beautiful studio and very relaxing! read more

Gentle beach yoga sounded so lovely. It was a beautiful backdrop, but the moment the class started the instructor was very off putting. She was non stop talking about herself, fiddling with her camera, and rudely barking at people to correct their poses. Granted I'm not super familiar with Iyengar yoga but the class felt choppy with no actual flow, just whatever popped into her head. I left feeling annoyed I paid $30, waisted a babysitter, and not relaxed whatsoever. My suggestion is to go to a different yoga studio or do your own yoga on the beach. read more

I have been attending Deni's classes every time I come to Maui for the last ten years or so. She is very compassionate about her yoga practice and sharing the knowledge she has gained with her students. The instructions she gives for each pose are clear and detailed, and she is able to describe the movements to achieve the proper pose in a way that is easy to follow. She provides variations to accommodate for all the skill levels in the class, as well as encouraging resting poses so we don't strain or hurt ourselves. I have never found Deni to be rude or condescending, and I must admit that some things other reviewers have complained about, I find a bonus. I always return home much the better for having participated in Deni's classes while here. read more

Deni was literally so rude to every single person in the class. I've taken a lot of yoga classes and this was hands down the worst one. She kept calling people out for not being flexible and making them feel bad or awkward about it. She kept snapping at people to look forward when there were literally a pod of whales we were looking at. She interrupted class to yell at an assistant instructor who showed up late. Overall, -10/10 experience. Would not recommend if you want to feel relaxed by the ocean. I felt so uncomfortable I tried not to make eye contact with her the entire time so I didn't get called out. She literally said word for word to one guy "Oh my god grab your blocks you can't do this pose you're knees are all bent" like I'm a pilates instructor and there are ways to correct form without making someone feel like crap about it! read more

I have been attending Deni's Maui yoga path for 10 years on our annual trip to Maui. I feel fortunate to have found Deni and the studio. Iyengar yoga is a very instructional alignment based style of yoga. A suitable practice, if you are serious about learning yoga. It is suitable for beginners as Deni provides lots of alternatives for personal limitations and pose progressions leading to the final pose. This is a safe way to learn yoga. read more

I am on vacation and walked past this yoga studio on my morning walk. I participated in gentle yoga. The instructor, Deni, talked the entire class. She would almost yell instructions over and over again. She was not open to participants modifying poses for their own well-being and would use a shameful tone to correct you if you tried. I could not wait for this class to end. Her condescending tone was offensive at best. The class also ended 20 minutes late which felt disrespectful to my time and my desire to leave immediately. She would single people out in class who were not "perfect." As an experienced yoga participant, I would not recommend this instructor. read more

Terrible experience!!! This was a anatomy class with someone who has practiced for 35 years and has forgotten what yoga/love/kindness is. I am awaiting shoulder surgery and before class I spoke with the instructor and explain to her that I have been doing yoga for 15 years /certified teacher and that I will be modifying during her class due to injury. She completely ignored what I said and was offended when I modified my practice and said I was stubborn in front of the entire class. This was the longest class of my life lol my girlfriend who is also a teacher said the only reason she has a studio is because it a hotel and it's a revolving door of new or beginning students and she does not need to count on repeat clients. This teacher came across arrogant and self serving with an agenda to prove her knowledge on anatomy. It was a lesson, not a practice I left feeling the need for yoga. read more

Underneath a restaurant and there were flies EVERYWHERE. I could not handle it. The sunrise yoga wasn't really at sunrise (7am) and the view was amazing --but the smell of food, the people constantly walking by, the flies. The Flies! Not worth the $25 drop in cost. This studio was in a beautiful resort. 'open air' is a stretch as it was more like a converted basement. Still from my spot at the back of the room I could actually see the ocean. However I wish I had picked one of the strip mall locations...despite it being an all-levels hatha class, it was a far cry from the gentle vacation yoga I was anticipating at a resort. The instructor seemed like she missed her calling as a drill sergeant and kept telling us that our bodies were weak and we HAD to do years of practice to make them strong. She also started off the class with a bunch of intense plank poses and yoga pushups and offered very few modifications for beginners. It seemed like it was much more geared towards a few regulars that were already pretty skilled than towards vacationers. read more

Kihei residents are lucky to have a seasoned certified Iyengar teacher right on the beach. Deni Roman is the real deal. She has studied with the Iyengar family in Pune, India at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute. In other words, the Harvard of yoga schools. Maui Yoga Path is well equipped with props, so all you have to bring is yourself and your Tapas. Her class today was inspiring. She worked on poses that addressed tight hips, feet and neck issues. While doing so, she beautifully interweaved concepts from the Patanjali Yoga Sutra in easy-to-understand terminology. Deni teaches from the heart and coveys the wisdom taught by the source in B.K.S. Iyengar who passed away last year. You will notice right away in her class with the depth and attention to detail. If you have ever been frustrated in your Vinyasa/flow class about the instructor not teaching you how to do to the pose properly or not understanding correct alignment, then Yoga Path will teach you the right path in how to do the asana correctly and safely. When doing an asana properly, it is 10 times more challenging than just "flowing" in and out of the pose, so don't view this as a less rigorous form of Yoga. This was the first time I practiced Iyengar Yoga with the beautiful ocean right out the door. Beautiful instruction, beautiful sequencing, beautiful scenery. It doesn't get any closer to paradise in my book. read more

I've been taking yoga for 3+ years, so I walked into Maui Yoga Path expecting to sweat it out like a pro... Instead of flowing through various yoga poses, I learned a great deal about alignment, precision and form. I took 3 different yoga classes from the instructors listed below: Grace - Grace really focused on alignment and came around to everyone in the class and adjusted our poses. She gently explained why she was making adjustments, so we could learn from her and put it to use in future practices. Nancy - Nancy's class was a much larger class (the 8am classes tend to be more crowded), so we didn't get as much individual attention. However, Nancy is an excellent instructor and also made adjustments when necessary. Her class flowed beautifully and I walked away feeling very peaceful. Nina - I lucked out and only 1 other person showed up to Nina's class, so we pretty much got a private session. Nina's class was super educational. She really helped me with my form when it came to cobra, among other things. Today, I went back to my yoga studio in San Francisco and noticed a huge difference with my flow, forward folds, warrior poses, etc thanks to the instructors above. I feel so fortunate to have been able to practice with these amazing women! Also, nothing beats ending your yoga practice listening to the sound of the ocean! read more

I have been going to the Maui yoga path for a few years now. It is absolutely the most inspiring and peaceful part of my day. I absolutely adore the teachers and the depth of the practice and awareness they are offering. My favorite class is the yoga and movement class which incorporates stretching and yoga with some fun upbeat dance moves on the yoga mat with light weights. It's very fun!!! I would highly recommend that you drop in and try a class anytime you're here in Maui. read more

A yoga class on the beautiful beaches in Maui sounded fantastic. Maui Yoga Path is located around back and underneath a massive resort property. The studio is just the one large room with a pillar in the middle and a wall of yoga accessories. The beach yoga class is daily at 7 am. I arrived, paid the $20 drop in class fee (which seems a bit pricey, but I figure we're paying a premium for the experience). Space to set up and practice outside is on fake grass, and a little uneven, with unparalleled ocean views. The instructor got our small group going, and well, the class wasn't all that. Now I'm not an Iyengar yoga practitioner, so I Tried to keep an open mind. However, in the hour class we did probably 5 small sequences. It's not a flow type class, and most of the class was spent listening to the instructor explain the poses and how the body should sit. Then I felt some of the poses were too intense to be attempting with so little warm up or loosening of the body. Some comments that were made seemed a little annoying, such as "In x amount of years teaching, I now just know what poses my students need. I can see it." Really? I'm sure instructors gain an intuition of sorts, but come on. Anyway, glad I did the class just for the experience, but I would not consider a regular practice here. It seems geared toward travelers and not for an actual practice. read more

if you want to deepen your personal yoga practice while on vacation then this is the studio for you. i found the instruction very informative and constructive to each of the poses she lead us through. i often find that, while relaxing, the 'flow yoga' i get at the gym at home is too rushed and doesn't do the work of aligning my body properly. following the iyengar method this studio has done wonders for my posture and back (which gives me constant strife). i am excited to look for other iyengar yoga opportunities when i get back mainland. however, even if i do not continue with iyengar (which i plan to do) my yoga practice will have benefited from the time i spent on the maui yoga path. today i was in such a state of relaxation after class that i was unconcious through everyone clearing their mats & props - the instructor let me rest until she closed up the studio. i don't know if there can be any higher praise for a yoga class than for a busy full-time mom to get an uninterrupted properly aligned nap at the end of class. worth every cent. also, in response to the previous submission - i always place myself in the doorway so i have a full ocean view (even though i have my eyes closed for half the class any ways). the breeze and waves and smells of the ocean ... om. read more

I have been increasingly determined to make Yoga a daily practice since working at Maui Yoga Path. I am stronger and clearer on the imbalances in my body that contribute to chronic pain. Since I don't like stretching I have to go to yoga and Maui Yoga Path is good. Easy to get to, on time, organized etc......I'm usually the worst in the class or in top 2 but they are nice plus I get a good workout in. I keep going back so it must help. read more

I went to Maui Yoga Path on vacation in Maui and it truly became the highlight of my 2 weeks there. Going to 2 sessions a day left me completely refreshed, relaxed, and I returned home visibly toned! Deni & Evan are excellent teachers, far superior to anyone I've gone to in NYC/New England, relying on age-old techniques as well as unique touches like integrating weights in some of the sessions. Do yourself a favor and go to Maui Yoga Path! Also, as an aside, although I have done yoga intermittently for years, when I went to Maui Yoga Path, I hadn't really done yoga (or exercised) for several months. I felt no pressure or like I was behind. They really do a great job of providing props and alternatives so that you can do each pose in the way that's most beneficial to you. read more

We were visiting and had heard a lot about Hawaii Yoga. Saw this link on Google and this place's name was there. http://www.prideofmaui.com/blog/maui/best-places-yoga-maui.html On the look of it: Ocean facing, sunrise, tropical climate. What could have gone wrong. Called them one day before and found out $20/ class for a drop in which to me seemed pricey but still thought if it was good quality, let's give it a shot. Drove one hour in the morning especially to do this Yoga but was quite disappointed with the level of Yoga taught (even if you could call it Yoga). It seemed they are part of some resort and cater to the resort people. 1. The ground where we sat wasn't even flat (how can you do Yoga on an uneven ground). 2. Very basic fitness exercises (stretch your hands, feet etc) in the whole session which you can't really call yoga, total one hour class with 15 min warm up, 15 min sleep in the end, and 30 min of basic stretches which didn't even appear any where close to Yoga (no surya namaskar, no poses nothing). Guys this is not called YOGA! 3. My personal opinion: Not worth $20 class, if it's free and you are staying in the resort may be worth it. For a $20 class felt disappointed and when expressed my feedback the facilitator was making excuses of how he could not do anything about it as he wasn't the owner. In the end after lot of embarrassed talk, got my partial return just to prove a point (they flatly refused can't do anything about it). Customer service in Hawaii was anyways not a high point of the trip. 4. On the goods: prolly the location, but would rather go on that beach, sit there on my own and watch sunrise. They didn't contribute anything to make the experience any better. read more

Deni Roman, is an excellent teacher; she gave very thorough and detailed instructions pertaining to each pose keeping with the Iyengar Yogic Tradition of careful balanced alignment - I was a first time student and did the class every morning for 2 weeks. I am slightly ruined as in my home town I can only find hot flow yoga, but because of Deni I am practicing every day! Highly recommend!!!! read more

Iyengar Yoga is such an amazing practice and so hard to find in my home town of Anchorage. When my husband and I travel to Maui we always go to Maui Yoga Path and especially delight to practice with teachers Deni and Evan. My husband found Maui Yoga Path several years ago when traveling via Yelp. If you want to deepen your practice, learn correct postures for each pose, delight in the sound of the ocean and truly be awakened to more awareness of your being, this is the place!
