Carl Massini pinpointed what the issue is and what exactly needs to be done. Carl Massini also drew a straightforward sketch of the issue, as well as left notes about what to do. I'm very grateful that I have this paper to show future contractors/repair companies the foundation repair I'm looking for! Finally, this inspection was very affordable and accessible for me. I prefer talking via email, and I was grateful Carl Massini was alright with that form of communication. Definitely go with him as your structured engineer! I really didn't know what to do about the foundation issue before. He also recommended me some companies / people / contractors to handle the foundation repair, and gave me feedback on other companies that I found that don't do foundation repair. I'm very happy with my structural engineer inspection!

I decided to call Carl, an honest structural engineer rather than a salesman at a foundation company. Carl, agreed something needed done but less than half of what I was presented. Carl gave me other companies to call. I called one of those companies and they agreed to follow Carl's recommendation, saving me $20,000 Take a breath, call Carl and get some peace of mind.

We met late afternoon with Mr Mason and my contractor and it went well, no surprises as my contractor already had a plan in mind and Mr. Mason, with a couple modifications, agreed upon the design. So i need to pay for the site visit and the drawings to get the work started. i received an invoice but the total cost for the project was $150 more than we talked about. I emailed them and the reply was the site visit went from $500 to $650. I was in a tight spot, i had to pay it to keep the project moving but I was totally unhappy with the price increase.

Last week my husband made an appointment for the engineer Mr. Bob Mason from Reliable Structural…read moreEngineers to inspect our house. According to the business's website, Mr. Mason holds a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering and Master of Architectural Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University (our alma mater, too!). We had purchased the house only a couple of months ago, and we had a regular house inspector do an inspection, but my husband wanted peace of mind about certain aspects of our house. A few days before the appointment, we had to reschedule because my husband's grandma passed away, and her funeral was during the appointment time. Mr. Mason rescheduled the appointment for a couple of days later. On the day of the appointment, Mr. Mason showed up a few minutes early. We had never before hired a structural engineer so felt a bit unsure of what questions to ask, but Mr. Mason answered all of our questions thoroughly. My husband probably asked the same question about the bouncy floors dozens of times, and Mr. Mason patiently answered the question each time. In about one hour, Mr. Mason inspected part of the exterior of our house, our basement, our two floors of living space, and our attic. Because of Mr. Mason's feedback, my husband and I learned a lot about the structure of our house and how to remodel it in the future. For example, we might add a trench drain between our driveway and garage, we know which load-bearing walls to leave alone when we remodel our kitchen and full bathrooms, we might add a roof vent and aluminum ladder in our attic, we will make sure that our front stoop has sufficient footing to add a portico, we might add sister joists to our floors to reduce bounciness, and we might add sister joints to our roof to support solar panels. In the future, we will use his recommendations to ensure that our contractors correctly perform their jobs. Because our house has no major issues, Mr. Mason gave us the option of purchasing a verbal report instead of a written report, which saved us a few hundred dollars.

In early 2021, my…read morehusband and I felt concerned about water in our backyard, so we called Matthews and one competing company for estimates. The competing company said that we had to tear apart our entire finished basement and to install several carbon fiber straps and sump pumps. In contrast, the salesperson David from Matthews honestly said that our basement wall had only 1/8" bow in some parts, had some minor efflorescence, and was completely dry, so adding carbon fiber straps and sump pumps now would be "extremely premature." We discussed with David how our backyard is muddy because of runoff from our neighbors' yards. David recommended that we install HydroBlox, which he said are like a French drain but are made from recycled thermoplastics and require almost no maintenance. The price estimate was $3,400. We scheduled the installation of the HydroBlox for a few weeks later in February 2021. Three employees arrived at our house around 9 AM and left around 2 PM. They used a machine to dig a trench in our backyard, and they hand-dug a trench on the side of our house near utilities. Then they installed the HydroBlox pieces and a storm box and put dirt over them. After a few months, the HydroBlox did not seem to be draining water from our backyard and actually made one section of the yard muddier. In May 2021, my husband called Matthews, and the next day an employee visited our house to inspect the HydroBlox. The following week, employees replaced clay with soil around the HydroBlox. An additional week later, employees installed more HydroBlox pieces in the backyard, a second storm box, and a 4-inch pipe along the side of our house. They charged us $0 for the additional materials and labor. Unfortunately, after 1.5 years, my husband and still saw much water in our backyard, so we hired another company to remove the HydroBlox and to install hundreds of feet of French drains and a dry well, which actually do drain the water. Although the HydroBlox did not work in our yard, my husband and I appreciate Matthews' customer service. We recommend that potential customers contact this business for their other services.

The salesman provided us with a proposal and 3 options. The salesman stated that if it was his room that he would just get the pump system and paint the walls because the system would keep the room dry. We painted the walls and the water dripped through the paint. Now the company is saying that we need a vapor barrier and should have had one installed initially. The initial cost for the vapor barrier was another $675. The salesman advised against it. He said that it was ugly and would be useless if it got punctured in any way and that the system was all we needed to have dry walls. We explained what the salesman told us and they said that the salesman-Max (that was representing them)no longer works there. They are now stating that it will cost double what original charge for vapor barrier was. Why would they offer an option without a vapor barrier if the room would not be waterproofed without it? Why would we pay $3,270 to have the same problem that we started with? If we were told that it wouldn't be waterproofed without the $675 which is what we are now being told by them then we would have paid it. They blame us, the salesman, but take no responsibility for the failure of their system! We are very disappointed that this company would treat their customers like this and not stand by what their salesman told us. We thought that he was the expert with the system. I would advise gluing your money to the walls for waterproofing before paying this disreputable company. Picture below is after system was installed and first rain after painting.
