This School offers multiple programs with satisfied customers... They offer something for ages 3 year olds, all the way up to grown men and women. This school has success nationwide in competition and we have taken numerous state titles in all age divisions. They do their best to accommodate everyone, offer a flexible schedule. Instruction is the highest level, with world champion instructors of Karate and BJJ. They also teach more than martial arts... with a life skill of the month such as goals, respect, courage etc. They even include complimentary wristbands so the kids carry the message with them . They also offer multiple FREE youth empowerment workshops to the community to help with bullying as well as women self defense seminars. Our school has a adopted park we clean up and we are very active in serving with Janets closet as well as the Midland soup kitchen. They offer a non contract, month to month. He can turn off comments on Facebook but he has no control over Yelp :) If you can go to class, learn the curriculum and not speak to another soul or buy into the hype show, then this is the school for you. They was a great Kajukenbo school and have some of the best fighters in the west region. However upon joining you won't train with the Matthews. You are taught 90% of your class by other non paid students. Then when they do grace you with their presence, it's to talk about a tournament they are promoting, an extra training seminar ($$$) that is not mandatory but be prepared for the consequences if you don't attend, and then to salute you out of class. The instructors are a man and his mother who cultivate an environment of gossip, drama, and bullying depending on who is their star student of the week. They will belittle and disrespect their students while demanding respect from everyone watching because it is their school after all. They will use anything they can to twist and manipulate to fit their agenda. At anyone's expense. Good luck. read more

I do love this martial arts school! It's been my honor and privilege to teach martial arts to this Midland community for 10 years now! I've grown up in this city. I'm thankful and blessed to run a business that focuses on making people better. Through martial arts training I've watched Confidence, Discipline, and Respect shine in people of all ages. I'm energetic, I'm passionate. I believe in what we do. I'm not everyone's cup of tea... and I know that. Nowadays Midland has lots of martial arts programs to chose from. My suggestion is don't base anything off a good or bad review. Please try us all. Don't let one school or instructor spoil the opportunity martial arts has to impact you or your child's life. Matthews martial arts is one of the best schools in Texas. I will be completely and totally honest here and say that it isn't for everyone. Martial arts is not for the weak of heart. It takes time and dedication, as well as cooperation and sacrifice. The end result is confidence and strong will as well as a new sense of belonging. It's a great place for kids and adults as long as you are willing to take the high road and let the teachers do the teaching. If you have problems address the instructors in a calm way and the problem will be immediately addressed. Matthews is a fun place but, still a school so I'll tell it like it is. The instructors don't take crap from students or parents, so respect is a two way street. If your respectful to the instructors and the school then your rewarded with friends and family that last a life time. Matthews Martial Arts has made a tremendous, positive impact in my family. Not only have we become closer as a family, but we have been allowed to become members of a bigger family at the karate school. While we (my 2 sons, ages 16 and 10 and I) expected to learn self defense, kata, and fighting when we signed up, I don't think any of us had any clue of the other things we would gain, such as self confidence, discipline, respect, and how to face our fears. These lessons go with us outside the walls of the dojo and help to make us better people in everything we do. Matthews Martial Arts is the most positive, uplifting, supportive, family oriented organization I have ever seen. My son started first and has learned self defense, self confidence, discipline, respect for himself and others, and true friendship. The Lady Warriors are what encouraged me and my daughter to join. 2 years ago my son asked to join karate. Some friends from church had been attending Matthews and highly recommended them. My son went for a free first lesson. Master Sifu Jason told me I'd know after the first lesson if my son would want to join.... he did! Since that time my daughters and myself have joined Matthews Martial Arts. It has been the best decision of our lives! Not only are we learning to defend ourselves, but we all have greater confidence and are in the best shape of our lives. My daughter has been a student of Matthews Martial Arts for 3 years. She started when she was 4 years old. My son joined shortly before he was 3. Love this place! I don't know why YELP is only recommending the bad reviews, that's such an injustice. Read all of them, especially from people who have actually been there for years! We've been a part of Mathews for over five years. All six of my family members do Martial Arts, ages 3-43, we love it! We've never been mistreated in any way. I have never attended a class here but I have watched a black belt test and seen their behavior at tournaments. The woman walks around with her nose in the air making fun of other women and "coaching" children the way you see on tv that they need therapy to recover from. The Main owner, Jason I think is his name is no better with his arrogant, untouchable attitude. You can't demand respect when you have no loyalty and give none in return. read more
