If I'm popping into the supermarket, or the book shop next door, I always grab a tray of sushi to snack on. Although they are part of the Highbury complex, I really believe it won't take them long to branch out with their own cafe, I believe that they are that great! I have eaten sushi all over this wonderful city, and Sushi Masa is one that I have always been consistently impressed with. They have nice service, and are always friendly and efficient.

My miso soup was pretty cold and didn't have the strong miso hit I like. The chicken was average and the rice and salad were nothing special either. Sushi Milford has a number of different hot meals & sides, as well as their sushi, which can also be ordered as platters if you need an event catered. My first impression was a very well presented, clean and airy shop with cute plants & ornaments throughout. There is bench seating by the window and a couple of tables outside and magazines to keep you occupied while you wait. Upon entering, I was greeted by a very cheery girl whom promptly took my order & thanked me. I arrived back within ten minutes after picking up a prescription and my meal was packed and ready to go. I had the salmon sashimi donburi ($14) and the presentation was exactly as the photo suggested on the wall. A good amount of veggies and fresh succulent sashimi on top of delicately flavoured sushi rice (I ordered non spicy so I could share with my little one). I would have rated them 5 stars but there was an over abundance of sliced red onion on my don and more importantly, they use the little packets of wasabi instead of mixing it fresh themselves. Their sushi in the cabinet looked very tempting with an assortment of options, standard flavour combinations and their own varieties. Not the cheapest for sushi but the value of their donburi bowls definitely compensate for their sushi prices, in my own opinion anyways.

For pick your own sushi I usually tend to steer clear from ones that are wrapped in seaweed, unless it was just made, as the seaweed is always soggy from sitting there for a while. In terms of cooked meals, the spicy chicken katsu don was delicious. It was missing spice but the chicken was tender and coating was perfect. We also tried the pork curry don. The pork was very dry (get chicken instead) but we enjoyed the curry itself. They do small donburis for $8 which is great if you are wanting to have some sides too - highly recommend. Our favourite has to be the tempura. It's $9 for a small and $14 for a large with assorted veges and prawn. The veges were super sweet (kumara, pumpkin, long beans, onion) we actually enjoyed them over the prawns which is definitely a first for seafood lovers like us. The batter was just right, not too thick and not overcooked. They provide tempura sauce unlike some sushi places that just give you soy sauce. The staff there are also super friendly and food comes out quickly. There is lots of seating both inside and out. The ingredients they use are incredibly fresh - no slimy salmon or limp cucumber here. Not to mention their topping to rice ratio is unreal and they don't stinge on the avo. Warning: The lines here at lunch times can get a little daunting but don't let that deter you - these guys operate like a well-oiled machine. Whilst Musashi looks pretty inconspicuous from outside, inside it absolutely hums. The decor is pretty nondescript, black walls with wooden features and giant sake bottles sitting on shelves but the food, well, that is another story. Being in a rather indecisive mood, I decided to go for the chicken teriyaki bento box. It was delicious. The miso had a load of flavour and was clearly not of the packet variety, the edamame beans were perfectly salted, the salad of finely cut cabbage and japanese mayo was crunchy and fresh but the real star of the dish was most definitely the chicken. It was cooked to perfection and was unbelievably tender plus the teriyaki marinade was one of the best ever had. My only teensy tiny complaint was that serving size seemed small given the price. Regardless, that food was that good I will definitely be going back. ASAP.

Both the food and drinks are moderately priced, which makes it great for groups and couples. The service is awesome and you;re alwasy greeted by a smiling face. There is a handy 'most popular' board which lets you know the most commonly ordered dishes. I recommend ordering something off the board (even if it's just little), you never know, you might find your new favourite thing. It can be busy on Fridau and Staurday nights, but I think it makes the ambience cool. Pop in for lunch or dinner - you'll always leave satisfied.

I had had Umi sushi in town and always loved it, this Takapuna store is no different. There is plenty of choice. From nigiri to the classics, to some unique flavours. There is also I hot section, with deep fried morsels, spring rolls and much more. One thing I love about Umi are the cute little descriptions they have all over the place, even on the tongs.
