a bunch of grapes on the vine

Love this small winery! Don't get me wrong, I love larger Napa wineries but nothing beats small local wineries that produce great wine! Matson is just that! Great wine, great people, and locally made. Oh and did I mention they are dog friendly?! Stop by for a glass or jump right in and join their wine club! So happy to have them right in Redding!

We were up in Redbluff for a wedding and decided to take a jont up north and see what we could see, which, and this is no insult to the Redding area, is not much. We pulled up to Matson, and it's on some beautiful land - if you feel like you're out where no business exists you're getting close. The tasting room is nice and comfortable, but don't expect what you would see in Napa or Sonoma - this has a more homie feel. Technically they are by appointment only, but we walked in with no problem. As far as the wines here were our favorites: Glacier white - Easy to drink, smooth mouth feel. Very fruity finish Trinity - Versatile wine. Good table Aglianico - Deep and delicious port, wineier than most port - I wouldn't skip this even if you don't like ports.

Hanging out with "muddy"

Laid back small vineyard in Shasta County. Cute tasting room with patio area over looking the vines. Staff very knowledgeable. Tasting room open Friday-Sunday. We joined the wine club, much more affordable compared to Sonoma or Napa wine country. We enjoyed a complementary tasting of about 5-6 wines. Then decided to buy a bottle of "Trinity" and enjoy the patio as we threw a tennis ball to "Muddy" Great Afternoon! Worth checking out if you live in Redding or if your just passing through!

The historic Thompson House is the perfect backdrop for wine tasting. The thing I love most about MFC is that it doesn't feel like a wine bar. It's got wine and a bar... but it feels like you're hanging out at your trendy friend's house. There's a living room area with fireplace, a dining room, a front porch with a cafe table & chairs, and big front lawn with Adirondack chairs in pairs & quads. Truly a choose your own pleasure! We couldn't pass up the perfect late spring afternoon, so I sunk into a deep Adirondack chair and enjoyed my wine tasting al fresco. The neon sign in the front window is the cutest, and just added to the overall vibe. Chuck was so hospitable, and brought me each pour from his post behind the bar inside. He gave insight into each wine, and then disappeared so I could enjoy at my own pace. MFC is very dog friendly, inside too, but I can't think of anywhere I've been in recent memory that was more perfect than wine tasting here on the front lawn with my pup in my lap. In the great words of Kurt Vonnegut, "If this isn't nice, I don't know what is."

My wife ordered Prime Rib and I ordered their Rib-Eye Steak and a Caesar salad for us to share. The Caesar salad was absolutely delicious and so big we didn't finish it. The plan was that we would share our main course too. When they placed the plates on the table my jaw dropped. Not only because of the size of the portions, but because of the aroma of the food that had just been placed before us. I took a bite of my steak and couldn't believe my taste buds. (Actually, I am salivating right now as I write this.) I have written before about the various steak houses I have eaten at, some of which are quite famous. So when I say that is the best Rib Eye I have ever eaten, that's saying something. My wife said the same thing about here Prime Rib. Mine was so good I didn't want to share any more with her, but she kept asking so I gave here about five more bites. The Prime Rib was fabulous, but the Rib Eye was truly awesome. The accompanying white potatoes and carrot were just right The was excellent too. It was so good we bought two bottles to take home, which was not our original plan. While we were eating the chef visited our table to make sure everything met our expectations. We all raved about the food. When I asked where they got their beef I understood why it was so good. It is from cattle raised on their own ranch and is certified Organic, Prime Choice. I also learned that they do a Sunday Brunch where they offer an Eggs Benedict dish that includes beef medallions. Sounds yummy. Sorry about this, Jack's Grill, but this is now our #1 choice for steaks. I know we will go there for our anniversary and probably at least one of our birthdays each year. The tasting room looks like it will only seat about fourteen people inside. I am not sure what they do if more people show-up. Maybe they overflow them into the banquet building. If it's nice out, they have patio dinning too. In any even, I would definitely call first to let them know you are coming and about when you expect to arrive. Our meal, including a bottle of wine, came to $107, before tip. The service person was excellent so I tipped accordingly. I know this is a little wordy, but the food was that good. I planned to take some leftovers home, as did my wife. However, there weren't any. My wife always gets a doggy bag. Her plait was clean, as was mine. PS - We have eaten lunch twice and dinner three times since I wrote the original review, and it has been just as good each time. Wonderful food, wine and service/!!! (10/4/12)
