And put EVERYTHING in writing. If you have a verbal discussion, send an email afterward reiterating the content of that discussion, and ask for clarification if Barker & Son disagrees. There were three things we expected from Barker & Son: (1) write a contract that covered everything on the architectural plans we provided (2) manage the project from start to finish, and (3) provide excellent customer service. On all three counts Barker & Son receive a failing grade from us. Because Yelp won't allow us to write a long review, we have to leave out the details we've left on other web sites. This was not our first major renovation - our previous house was an estate sale home that we spent $75K initially renovating - so we have had experience dealing with contractors on major renovations. (That process was unbelievably smooth, but it was in Virginia, so we couldn't rehire the same guy.) We will never consider hiring Barker & Son again.
