My grandmother is from Peru and so I've grown up with a lot of Peruvian influence in my life, so decided to check this place out while I was in town. I cannot stress enough how incredible the food was. It felt like I was back home with mi abuelita in the kitchen excitedly awaiting her to finish cooking. This place is as authentic Peruvian as it gets, and the food is exquisite. The service staff here was so friendly and kind, and answered any questions I had. They made great recommendations and you could tell they really cared about you and your enjoyment. Loved the Peruvian Flags in the background and while quiet it had a very hospital and cozy vibe to it, as if I was at home. I got the Lomo Saltado (and also added sweet plantains/fried eggs) and it was to delicious, the flavors went together so well and everything just reminded me of home. Delicious authentic Peruvian food in odd location with great service and traditional offerings. Having enjoyed Peruvian food elsewhere and happy to see a new place pop-up after another one had closed down a couple years ago, we made time to come try it out. The atmosphere isn't great and it's in an odd location. It was cold inside since it was below freezing outside, but the service was wonderful and the food was pretty good. I hadn't had Peruvian food in years so I really wanted to try Mati. I finally got around to it today. My roommate and I came by for dinner. They were welcoming and walked my roommate (who had never had Peruvian food) through the menu, and brought us a dish of seasoned dried corn to try. I got the chicha morada, which arrived in a large sturdy goblet and tasted great. We shared a serving of papa a la huancaina and an order of lomo saltado and both were spectacular. I'm not too familiar with Peruvian food, but someone highly recommended Mati, a newish restaurant off San Pedro, across from the fair grounds. I ordered the Chicha Morada which is a purple corn drink made with pineapple, green apple, and cinnamon. I wish I was sipping on some right now! For my appetizer, I ordered the Papa a la Huancaina which comes with boiled yellow potatoes topped with an Aji Amarillo cream sauce. And then for my main dish I ordered the Lomo Saltado which comes with marinated strips of sirloin, red onions, and tomato, served with rice and french fries. Everything was absolutely delicious! I want to go back and eventually make my way through the entire menu. The customer service was great. My server walked me through the menu since I wasn't familiar with any of the dishes. Wow, what a wonderful Peruvian restaurant! I went this afternoon with a friend to try this restaurant. The inside is unassuming, simple and traditional. The service was perfect. The food was so delicious and flavorful. It seems like they use good quality ingredients. We started with some appetizers and then my friend had the Aji Gallina and I had the Lomo Saltado. So... this may be my new favorite place in New Mexico l. I'm no expert on Peruvian food but the reputation is good. Here's the thing. It's kind of a dive but clean. Not a diner. Not a greasy spoon. China plates. Metal flatware. But almost no ambiance to speak of. Very casual. However... it's all about the food here. Food and service. Food was excellent. Service was excellent. I LIKE going to a place where what I'm paying for is primarily the food and the service. I had a seafood paella, (big plate), and it was excellent. It really was a big plate and I barely finished it all. Like Thai food, each dish here is made independently and separately so they can absolutely add or subtract whatever you like from YOUR dish that night. We will absolutely be back. read more

I think for Albuquerque, this Peruvian spot is pretty decent. I got the Peruvian steak with fries and the flavors were alright. The chicken soup was also not bad. Both dishes had good flavors. The owner was absolutely delightful! And the food did not disappoint. We came because it is located in the neighborhood we grew up on and we also love trying new places. There are so few Peruvian options in the city (at least options open on weekends for dinner) that I was glad to see Mati open! The spot is in a fairly unassuming location across from the NM Expo center. Parking is tight and not much space but the inside is nicely decorated with Peruvian flags and decor. We started out with the Papa a la Huancana. The aji amarillo was delicious! I could (and definitely may have) scooped up the sauce on its own even after the potatoes were finished. It's mildly spicy and creamy but packs a very nice flavor. The Chicha Morada that accompanied it had a unique flavor. I liked that it wasn't too sweet. Our entrees were the absolute star of the show. The fish was fried perfectly and came with four different sauces that provided a nice variety of flavors. The side salad was also delicious - onions acidified in vinegar gave a nice contrast to the fried fish and creamy sauces. The seca de carne was rich, flavorful, and packed a punch. Jose, the owner if the restaurant, personally serves everyone and was a joy to talk to. This is truly a hidden gem in the city that everyone should experience! Next time we want to try the ceviche. The ambience of this restaurant could be described as "modern dive" with a hint of pepper. The outside of the building is drab and unimpressive, the chairs and tables are mis-matched. Okay so the appearance is not great, but what about the prices. WAY TO HIGH!! Average price of a modest meal, $20/plate. We left with a sticker shock price of $70 dollars. That's pretty high for a place that probably has low overhead. The food: The food was good. The red snapper was maybe the best i've tasted in a very long time. Both of our plates were very good. The wait staff was very friendly and I have not complaints, except the cost of the meal. For that location on San Pedro, the plates should cost no more than $12.99/plate. I gave Mati a positive review because of the good tasting food and the very friendly owners. But the ambience and prices are not good. Hope this helps. read more

I was so pleased with everything at Mati, what a great addition for the eclectic Latin food scene in Burque. Through an Afro-Peruvian samba band I sang in for years, I gained a passion for Peruvian food- the OTHER universal language, next to music! That enriching experience led me to want to work for a high-end mom and pop Peruvian restaurant in Long Beach, CA. The chef there taught me so much more about the fare and I'm proud to say they're still very successful, now more than ten years later. Fancying myself well-versed, I was super excited when I saw Mati open in my hometown and finally tried it last night. They DEFINITELY hit the mark! The appetizers we had were platanos fritos, served with a zesty aji amarillo sauce- great texture, thought my kid would eat them all! The ceviche Mati was a great mix of super fresh, chilled bass, shrimp and octopus (lovely to see in the desert) with salsa criollia, both fresh and toasted choclo (Peruvian corn) and some Leche de tigre that had us drinking it from the bowl-warning, the rocoto on the side is SPICY! Then, your Lomo Saltado is the "staple dish" like the enchilada, that all places are measured against. This one was classic- tender steak, real and hearty fries, tomato and red onion, tender rice and the savory lomo sauce complimented by a fresh huacatay- the famous "green sauce"! The Aji de Gallina is what I was most excited about. Typically blended with Aji amarillo peppers, Parmesan and cream, this comforting heavy sauce is mixed with tender shredded chicken, a boiled egg slice and served with sliced papas and rice. *chef's kiss* on a cold day, now my heart is full! Wash this all down with their chicha morada or maracuya juices and you'll be in heaven! Best part was making friends with Alex, the owner- can't wait to go back and try the rest!
