My son wasn't behind but we felt that strong math skills now would give him confidence and a head start. We also wanted an after school activity that wasn't sports. Mathnasium has been great. I expected some push back but he would ask to go. After 6 months I do find myself negotiating terms with my son, but he still enjoys going. They have a reward system that really motivates him. He has excelled so much in his school work that his teacher has taken notice. He has definitely gained the confidence that we wanted. read more

This Mathnasium in White Flint (N. Bethesda) is more expensive (by $25) than the one in Rockville, provides 1.5 hours 1x a week vs. 1 hour 2x a week than the one in White Flint. As far as I can tell, you cannot reserve appt times in advance, you simply show up. I did not get an answer on what happens when too many kids show up on the same day... While the one in Rockville operates by a rule base system (which can be frustrating at times), there doesn't appear to be set rules for the Mathnasium in White Flint that they are willing to share with you prior to signing up and actually looking at the contract (I did not get to that point). The main problem I had with this particular location is that they insist on talking with you over the telephone, and don't like to answer questions via email. They are extremely private about sharing the details of their organization and how they run it and they were extremely reluctant to provide details of their organization in writing. I got the suspicion, although I have no way to prove or deny it, that they run by an exception system where if the owners like you, you can get what you need, but if they don't, you easily lose sessions you paid for. It would be awesome if someone who attends this Mathnasium would provide details of the organization so people could make an informed decision. read more

My daughters attended Mathnasium for a couple of years and the program is fantastic. The system is easy for the kids to understand and comply with and the students are offered regular rewards for achievement (my daughter often came out with candy as that is what she ALWAYS selected!). The teachers at the Mathnasium in North Bethesda were excellent and my daughter enjoyed working with them. They are also incredibly accomodating and helpful. While my daughter was attending, she was preparing for a final exam in her Algebra 1 class. She just had a couple of questions but not enough time to go to a full session. We dropped in and the teacher was more than happy to help her with her questions. Not only that, but she printed out several sheets for her - giving her explanation of the topic she could take home with her and a couple of extra practice problems for her to work on. Impressive! One of the best things about this Mathnasium is there is no scheduled time for your appoitment. I can drop in with my daughter for a session as long as they are open. This kind of flexibility is very helpful when you have the hectic, ever-changing schedule of teenagers. We never felt as if the sessions were too crowded or my daughter could not get the help she needed. They are very good about the teacher-student ratio and it was well staffed whenever we attended. I would highly recommend this Mathnasium for kids in the North Bethesda area. It is a great environment and the teachers are outstanding. read more

We started Mathnasium of North Bethesda towards the end of the school year, when we realized our daughter, who was doing well in second grade, was nonetheless struggling with understanding some basic math facts. While it is still early days for her in the program, we are incredibly impressed with the instructors, who strive to connect with the students on a personal level and exude a real love of math (and teaching math); we are equally impressed with the owners, Susan and Ruben, a husband and wife team who run the program with a small business family feel that was palpable the moment I walked in to have my daughter assessed. Susan spoke with me about the program, and my daughter's assessment that first visit, for probably well over an hour, not once looking at her watch. She and Ruben have also shown kindness and great flexibility in allowing us to extend our prepaid sessions into the fall because our childcare fell through and it's been very tough getting our daughter to the center other than on Saturdays, as my husband and I work full time. Another plus, upon learning that my daughter is in a full Spanish immersion program, Susan made a point of not only telling me that they offer instruction in Spanish, but chatting up my daughter in Spanish, which created an instant connection. Perhaps the best evidence of the program's effectiveness is not in the reward system (which, as another reviewer commented, my daughter loves), or the games (a brilliant way to supplement the individualized learning plan by integrating fun into the learning process), but the fact that my daughter wants to go to Mathnasium on Saturday mornings because she simply loves going. And on the way home each week, she regales me with the details of what she's learning. One couldn't ask for more than that. I'll close this review by also noting that on the recommendation of a friend, we had enrolled our daughter in Kumon back when she was in Kindergarten. We were thoroughly underwhelmed and put off by the approach of the program--drilling students to learn basic math facts through worksheets that she was to complete every day and an utter lack of individualized instruction. Our daughter declared that she hated math back then. Now she has the confidence to say that she loves math--that she understands math--and we can see her progress even over a relatively short period of time. This place is pure gold. read more
