My child loves math but she had missed some instruction during the school year and wanted to work on it over the summer. We bought math workbooks and a subscription to IXL to use during the summer. However, it became clear that having regular sessions and attention from a tutor was needed. Having me, her parent, as her tutor was . . . challenging for us both. Mathnasium seemed like something to try next. After the initial skills assessment, we decided to sign her up for the summer sessions. After a few sessions, it became clear that she was loving it. She enthusiastically attended each session this summer (20 one-hour sessions!), had a great time with the tutors, and learned quite a bit. She just completed her school's math placement assessment for the next school year. She definitely caught up on the missed instruction and then some! We have been so pleased with Mathnasium and their work with our daughter. On her recent NWEA national standardized test she exceeded the standard for her grade level and was in the 97th percentile. What a waste of money! We paid $180 for one week of camp through Rec and Ed. The classes each day were 3 hours long. This was sold to me as a fun way for kids to increase their math skills. I was told that each child would be assessed and then based off of that assessment the instruction they received would be tailored to that child. This was to insure that each child was learning new material and age-appropriate material. They also marketed themselves as a place that taught math in creative and fun ways. Neither of these things are remotely true. My 5 yr. old child did the same 2 main activities everyday. He flipped numbers over on a big board, aka "Number Board Game" and he picked numbers up and hung them off a cloths line. They played these twice, once before and once after snack He also did other non-math based activities. The rest of the time was free-time were the children just played games with each other. He hated both main games and complained to me since day one that they were boring. I agree 100%. That does sound pretty lame and boring. How in the world can they seriously suggest that that is a creative/fun way to teach math? Plus, he already knows his numbers so what is that suppose to be teaching him? On Monday I asked the staff what he did and they were very vague. Explaining that the children rotate around to each table and do different activities at each table. She was not forthcoming with additional details and turned away from me to welcome other parents that were also dropping off their children. I waited and when she was done with them, I again grabbed her attention and trying to get her to give me more details but she just repeated the same sentence. I then asked her if I would be getting a summary of what they learned each day and she said that they would be sending out emails. These emails never came. I asked again on Tues. thinking that I misunderstood and she meant a general email at the end of the week but again she assured me that no they would be sending them out and we should be receiving them on Wednesday at the latest...I received just one late Thursday night which was a general email sent out to everyone. I thought the other activities they did at the rotating tables, would be focused around learning math, nope! One day an activity involved him coloring their #1 mascot (printed on a piece of paper) with crayons...in case someone might think that this is a good way to teach my son his numbers...let me put that suggestion to rest because, he knows the number 1 already. The knowledge that he knows his numbers should have been revealed to them during the assessment that they assured me did occur on the first day. On another day an activity involved him making a bracelet with plastic stars. This might have been a good opportunity for them to involve some pattern learning skills but, instead they either ignored him and left him without any instruction or simply didn't bother to incorporate that potential learning, as his bracelet was completely constructed from identical red stars. On another day the activity was for him to collect random pre-cut shapes and connect them with a paperclip. He already knows all his shapes, cold. He has known all his shapes since he was 3. So this definitely also was not tailored to help him learn anything. He was then left to decorate them. Which he did again without any creative instruction. He just was left to scribble. (See photos) On Friday when I came to pick him up they handed me a folder which contained his "work for the week". When I returned home and looked through the folder I saw that his "work" involved him being left unsupervised with worksheets that he just scribbled all over because he was obviously given no direction as to what to do with them and no instruction was given to him or help. (See photos). I called the owner angry that this is what he was doing. She told me that this was just a general packet of worksheets that was given to everyone in the beginning of the week and assured me that he was only asked to do the ones that were at his level. I thanked her and hung up but after looking at them more closely and thinking about it a little more I realized that that couldn't possibly be true. Why are they all drawn over and scribbled all over if these were not put in front of my child for a period of time? Obviously, these papers were given to him to "work" on. The addition worksheet is way above his abilities. He doesn't know how to do any actual math. Yet, he obviously spent time with this worksheet in front of him. It is scribbled all over and he spent time drawing along the lines trying to make the house appear......poor kid didn't even have any crayons for this one to make it work....just a pencil. Another paper details a castle and king. He must have had this in front of him for a while unsupervised, to accomplish that. Everyday he complained that he was bored and the instructors were mean. This is a good place to start your YOUNG children. I would say 2nd through 5th grade. Where they can still help with filling in the gaps in their math weaknesses. But once you start in middle school or highschool personally I feel its to late you are doing a bunch of worksheets from years ago that you should help you but I don't see how you can play "catch up" read more

They tutor in math, the structure is very simple yet well organized, the children get a balanced combination of independent work time as well as instruction from the well trained tutors. Both of my kids who are in middle school have gotten a lot of great help at Mathnasium. Our son who was not able to get the in depth help he needed in class got an A+ on a recent Algebra test after a Mathnasium tutor helped him master "rise over run." All the tutors are good and Grace and Vera, the managers, make sure to match up students with tutors based on learning style. Mathnasium has eliminated the stress of trying to help our kids at home with math homework that we have clearly forgotten how to do! read more

My son was an average math student prior to using the services of Mathnasium. Approximately 6 months after joining we started seeing improvement in his Math scores. A year later he received A's in honors calculus and honors physics. He scored 95th percentile for Math on his ACT. He is now taking AP college level physics and AP college level calculus and is scoring high marks. My son loves the staff and interaction with the tutors. Had a bad experience with another "Chain" tutoring company, so I was leery when I sent my son to Mathnasium of Ann Arbor, but was pleasantly surprised by their professionalism and helpfulness. I am glad I went with them instead of accepting one of the private math tutor in town. read more

Our daughter (now a rising senior) has been at Mathnasium since January of 2013. When she started there, she had a C+ in Algebra II, she lacked confidence and she hated math. She just completed her junior year with an A in Math Analysis AC. Her SAT score in Math was also unbelievable in comparison with practice tests 8 months before. I attribute this dramatic improvement to the excellent tutoring at Mathnasium. They work diligently with students to help them understand the beauty of math. But to get the most out of Mathnasium, your child has to be focused and conscientious. He/she cannot skip sessions or only do math homework there. If your child is determined to conquer math, the tutors and staff at Mathnasium will do all they can to help your child realize that goal. read more

Our sons entered the Mathnasium program 2 years ago after being in Kumon for a year prior to that. While they were progressing in Math, they were performing at grade level and not too excited about Math. After starting the Mathnasium program, their excitement about Math changed greatly. They started to think about Math as fun rather than something they needed to do. They were always staying late after their Mathnasium lessons and playing games at the center. Their progress in math also accelerated significantly. Both boys are performing at 1-2 grade levels above their actual grade and are able to handle a wider variety of problems. Some people might feel that Mathnasium is only for students that are behind but it has helped our children really foster a love for math and progress signficantly ahead of their current curriculum fully understanding the concepts they are engaged. Our daughter (10 yrs old / 5th grade) has been attending Mathnasium for over a year, including through the summer, and we've been very impressed. She was falling behind in math when she started and is now doing much better in math, including slightly ahead of grade level. Her comprehension and confidence in math have definitely increased, and her teacher reports that she is doing quite well in math, including regularly volunteering to explain math concepts to others during "student teacher" time. My daughter attended tutoring twice a week at Mathnasium through her 4th grade year from September 2013 through July 2014 and loved it! My daughter has never enjoyed math, but has since changed her mind after attending Mathnasium. The tutors did very well working with her and getting her to pick up easy and fun ways to work with mulitiplication facts, fractions, decimals, etc. She improved 45% from pre- to post-tests and continues to increase her knowledge and love for math. My daughter had an excellent experience at Ann Arbor Mathnasium. She attended tutoring sessions there for 3 years (grades 6-8). Started tutoring sessions at Mathnasium when it became obvious that she was hating math, defining herself as some who couldn't do it, and was falling behind and doing poorly. While initially reluctant, she became deeply invested in the program as she began to feel more confident and began seeing results. Mathnasium was able to identify and address weak/missing skills in her math foundation. She's since been confidently thriving in high school math and now considers it to be one of her favorite subjects. She really liked and appreciated the tutors. We've been especially happy with the flexibility in scheduling - makes it easier for busy families. The owners, Grace and Vera, are very responsive and friendly. This is the first service like this we've tried, so I don't have a lot to compare it to, but I do know that my very math-averse 13 y.o. does not hate coming - which is a small miracle! read more

We called ahead to schedule an appointment and were told to come in any day of the week after school until closing time for an assessment. When we arrived, the director, Vera Chiu, told me to sit and wait. 30 minutes passed while she walked around the center, looking occasionally at us but never coming back to help us. Another parent that witnessed our entire arrival and initial interaction was even taken aback at how rude she was and how long we waited. We eventually walked out after it was obvious we, as prospective clients, and our time, were not going to be respected. read more

We are very pleased with the Mathnasium on Packard in Ann Arbor. My daughter made a lot of progress in a short time, and looks forward to her sessions. They started by analyzing the areas she needed to work on so she wouldn't be bored working on things she already knew, and every session ends with a fun (but educational!) game. They also use incentives to complete worksheets, which is a big help to stay focused and motivated. We would recommend them to anyone needing extra help in math, or, like us, looking for an enrichment experience to keep ahead if your child already likes and does well in math! read more

I want to begin by saying that i wrote a review last year following our daughter's summer at Mathnasium. The review disappeared from both this site and google. So, I'm first, suspect. But, as a parent, I wish we'd seen an honest review before signing up for this program. 1st, the owners are kind and friendly. The program seemed great as it touted teaching Math in a fun and interesting way to children who struggle in the subject. Turns out 600.00 later, our 6th grader spent the entire summer doing worksheets and receiving very little actual tutoring. She brought it to our attention that she was learning nothing new. When I spoke witht the teachers, i found they were having her repeat for weeks things she knew and had not assessed her for those she did not. They said, "why didn't you tell us?" I'm not the tutor and had trusted in their process. The solution was to shift to more copy worksheets without concrete, fun, instruction. At the end of the program, several weeks of driving across town and lots of cash, our daughter had not learned anything new at all and did not enjoy Math any more than before. She did not mind going and liked the owners and the young instructors. She,like us, had wanted to engage in the program to improve her Math skills. The bottom line is parents would better benefit from plopping your child down at home with ditto sheets. Also, there were other parents there, who'd brought their children their for longer and agreed that their children were not progressing in Math but that they where still paying large monthly fees and going in the hopes something would eventually work. I hope this review is not deleted and that it helps parents who want an honest review of the program. read more
