If I could give zero stars then that is what I would give them. I should have read all the reviews prior to renting a tractor from them. I was in a pinch and needed it. What did the spider say to the fly? " Will you walk into my parlour?" said a spider to a fly; " 'Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy" And you know how that story ends up. 1) Mathias doesn't care about the reviews. Many businesses ask for the customer to fill out surveys so that they can figure out how to become a better service to the customer. Not Mathias. They do not care, obviously. Bad business practices. 2. If you do step into the parlour and rent from these shysters do not give them the address to where the work will be done. They will file a lien when their old faulty equipment breaks down saying that you intentionally damaged their old equipment. That "waiver damage" fee is a sham. It will cost more in attorney fees to fight it. 3. Their equipment will likely break down and you will pay for it. Ask to look at equipment behind the shop. You will see many heavy equipment machinery that has broken down and is not being repaired. I bet that they would rent it to you though after they say that they will get a mechanic to repair it. That is a guess though as it didn't happen to me. Their equipment is old... compare to united and you will see the enormous differences. Don't be cheap as it will cost you much more than you realize with this crooked family business. 4. They could buy insurance from chubb or some other source to cover their equipment break downs but they choose not to do so saying that its too expensive. What does that mean? They would rather pass along any cost due to their old equipment break downs to the consumer. 5. Don't give them an credit card with a large capacity because they will use it. You will have to go to court or spend alot of time on the telephone with cc company to dispute the fraud. 6. Do rent from them if you are an attorney that specializes in class action lawsuits. You will find many past customers, including me that will participate, I am sure. read more

Just FYI Mathis Rental in La grange and Bastrop has the worst customer service! We rented a skid steer and it broke on us, not even 1/2 way through the job. They delivered it and charged us $800 total. They came to pick it up and rutted up the yard. Then only gave us a $200 credit. No credit for the next delivery on one that actually worked!! Refused to come fix the rut in the yard. The owners daughter was very rude and hung up on me 3 times!! I wanted to let people know how they treat customers, who have even used them before! They were even willing to work with me when I decided I needed to swap something out because I planned incorrectly. I rented a log splitter from Mathis. I took it to my place where I had cut wood. I split two logs and a Cotter pin in the hidrolícele arm broke. I took it back to Mathis (45 minutes away) and they didn't have another splitter. I asked for my rental fee back, as I wasn't anywhere near finishing my job, and was shown a sign that said no money back. We talked for a while and I pointed out they rented me a broken splitter and they needed to refund my rental. After arguing another 45 minutes, I finally got my money back. Don't use their services! They are not honest and do not do what is right. Dishonest people! read more

We had a large pond project on our land and decided to go with Mathis Rentals because of proximity and equipment selection. After not only being helped by staff to get the equipment home, they went so far as to assist us when we needed additional items to finish the project. At one point, my husband actually got one of the skids stuck and someone was sent quickly after we contacted them to help us further. For future projects, the location is convenient, the tool selection is helpful, but we will be back because of their service we experienced first hand. Thank you! read more

Absolute horrible company to do business with. Their accounting department and staff are rude, never return calls and are continuously late on their account. Have called everyday for twice a day to receive payment with constant excuses. They have even hung up on me multiple times. My frustration level with this company is through the roof. After leaving with a generator -- of which I was not informed that I would need additional parts for in order to make it work as needed -- the manager/help desk/miserable lady turned me away when I called for help. After calling and informing of our problem, she said that she couldn't help us because they would be closed in 10 minutes. Horrible service, and it looks like a junk yard over there. I rarely rent and had prescheduled a trencher for a week not sure if I'd need that long or not. First day delivered and chain popped off. They came tried fix and popped off again. They came got and took to shop brought back next day afternoon and chain was tight but popped off again. Then day three they finally brought me another machine that was newer. I was able to complete job finally with this one in one day. I called said I don't need anymore. How are we handling this I would had done day 1 if I had this better equipment. They said they'd only charge me for one day rental and delivery fees. I said cool that's what I want to hear. I now checked account and I was only credited the deposit. Not the extra days I didn't use. They said policy is only giving store credit back on days not used. I said I do not rent often enough to need store credit. They said oh well that's our policy. I said I don't have paper work in front of me to see this fine print. But things like this should be forth coming and when problems happen like they did I think company should make it right. Reimburse me, not store credit. So needless say after I find use of store credit, I won't use their services again. read more

Worst machine I have ever rented. Rented a mini excavator and the driver told me the machine didn't always engage when you pulled the arm down to operate it. What he didn't tell me was it pops out of gear every time you hit any kind of bump. One hour in the arm won't lock in at all and I have to use bull rope to hold the arm in place so the thing will move. I have operated equipment for 12 years and this piece of crud turned a 5-6 hour job into a 10 hour job that I wasn't even able to complete. When I called to have something done about it they could not have cared any less. I was so mad I didn't ask for a name but the lady of the phone was completely blank when I told her about the issues like she already knew and was used to hearing it. I asked for a partial refund not even a full one and was given no response other than we have to pick up the machine first. There has been no effort what so ever by them to make right what happened and after reading other reviews I can see it won't happen so I'm not going to waste my time. Just know that you came recommend by another local company that was unable to get me a machine that day and they will also be notified about the neglect of your business to act in a professional manner. read more

Terrible equipment and even worse service. Delivered a backhoe that had a damaged hydraulic hose. I brought this to their attention so the equipment would not get damaged. After taking days to pick the unit up and wasting valuable time on the job, I eventually rented from Sun State. Kimberly the owner will not return phone calls and their staff is rude. I just hired an attorney because they charged my credit card without authorization and never sending me a bill. read more

Steer clear from this company. We are a small family-owned businesses that has been charge for $400 of service for equipment rentals that all failed within the 30 minutes. Unfortunately for me, I went out to rent a mini excavator this weekend & the only one they had available was an old one with used up tracks (which is normal since they are for construction use). I didn't pay much attention to it since I thought they would know by then. After about 1 hour of use ON DIRT the track ripped in half and was useless after that. Once I went to turn it in and get my money back they ( The owners) denied and instead wanted to charge me for a new track. I tried explaining to them what when on but them as the business owners don't want to lose money, so although they see something worn out they are going to keep it in service until someone comes and busts it completely so they can charge. Which to me is unfair because you have to service your equipment & have it in good condition. Also fyi all of the workers and mechanics are trained to say ("That doesn't rip on its own") so don't try to get any reason out of them, they protect daddy's money like no other.! read more

Warning about renting from Mathis Rentals (Liberty Hill) I rented a 10 inch wood chipper from Mathis Rentals on Saturday ($300). I asked if it was tested before I picked it up. They said yes. Needless to say when I set it up the clutch would not engage. They closed at noon Saturday and would not do anything about it. After speaking with them today they did not feel responsible. I will not be using them ever again. I will use Cat Trax Rentals for now on. read more

Their equipment is always in terrible shape, needing maintenance and repair. When it doesn't function and needs to be returned, they try to charge for the time regardless. Had that experience several tines before realizing that was the norm for them. Quit using them. Better to go into Austin for more reliable service. read more

I have used Mathis rental 4 times in the last year. They have always been great. (I've renter a sprayer, tiller, chipper and another tool the escapes me). They load the items, show me how to use them, always answer their phone and were always opened on time. The people there are very nice and helpful. BE AWARE...these folks are snakes. I recently rented an excavator for the 4th time. This time for only one day with delivery and pick up included. They could not tell me when it would be dropped off so I was not here. I used it for less than 5 hours and was finished. When I checked my account, they charged me for a second day. So I called to inquire the lady was very rude...telling me it was MY responsibility to call them when I was finished to confirm pick up time. To which I replied..I already did by scheduling (and paying for) 1 DAY with pick up included. Apparently there is some note on the invoice that says its the renter's responsibility to schedule pick up AGAIN after they finish using it. Mathis still has not given me a copy of this INVOICE so I cannot confirm. BUT I do know that I was NEVER told to schedule pick up twice and I certainly did not use the excavator for two days b/c that's not what I scheduled. Even after this disagreemnt the machine sat for two more days so you know they didn't have anyone else lined up to rent it. THEY'RE just looking to SQUEEZE you for as much money as possible. UNBELIEVABLE. a simple one day, $350 rental (w delivery) turned into almost $600 and I only used half of the hours allotted to a one day rental. I was really excited about having a local rental shop to use. I will have to call someone in Austin next time. Three other times I rented from these folks and NEVER had to reschedule a pick up I had prepaid for...and was never charged extra until now. I guess they need the money. Hope it was worth loosing a repeat customer for $215. BTW: Kelly is extremely rude...will not discuss questionable charges and even went so far as to call me juvenile for questioning her. Really... I'm 40 years old...sorry if I don't like being screwed for services I did not ask for or use. read more

Wow Wow Wow... Customer service at its best! As a single woman delving into the task of land clearing I was a bit green (no pun intended) and found a brush cutter was the way to go. I presented myself before these wonderful people with a borrowed pickup and nothing else. In a blink of an eye they had me fitted with a tail hitch, trailer and brush hog. Super nice people from the office to the tech staff with no end of patience in helping me achieve the result I wanted in the most affordable way possible. I would recommend Mathis Rentals to anyone close enough to listen and will definitely be back again when the need arises. read more

WARNING. Do not rent from this place. It is a huge rip off. The machines are always in need of repair. We rented a backhoe for a week. $2200. We had an experienced operator run the machine. The machine was broken. Hydraulic fluid was squirting IN the cab. Machine was over heating (among other major things) We called immediately; they wanted us to do the repairs. We told them to pick up the worthless trash. When I went in for credit they (Kelly) gave us 500 in store credit. We used the machine for less than 12 hours. She really impressed me over the phone but completly Wow'd me when I went in to pick up my skid steer. I've never seen someone multitask and still show good customer service the way she did!! BEWARE when it comes to renting from Mathis Rentals in LaGrange, Texas. When you rent from Mathis you are agreeing to NO REFUNDS but STORE CREDIT ONLY. If you are a homeowner likeme, store credits may not work for you. If you are a contractor, it might be a better deal. I was aware I signed the store credit contract but did not have any idea how much this would get me! With the knowledge of store credit and feeling that this should be a reputable place of business, I rented a 6" chipper for a week and tried using it. It would not pull tree branches of any size so I returned it and the guy at the Mathis said it was inop. The manager offered me a 9" chipper and once I started using it, it jammed and nothing was coming from the chute. Two guys from the store came and unjammed the chute but once I started using the chipper again, the same thing happened. I had wasted two days and nothing accomplished. I took the second unit back and the guy on site told me there were clogs in the blade/housing area and they worked on it again. Because of the store credit issue, I actually tried to use it again. It still did not work properly. I want to add that both chippers looked pretty old and beat up. I returned the second chipper for the second time. The owners of Mathis said all this was due to OPERATOR ERROR despite the fact that their employees never saw me use the units and they stated to me the equipment was not working properly. I have rented chippers in the past from Home Depot in Brenham, Texas. The only reason I used Mathis this time was for convenience - a shorter distance to transport the unit. I highly recommend Home Depot's rental equipment. Their chippers are in top notch condition and I used them a week at a time and got lots of work done. I also rented a wood splitter and a stump grinder from Home Depot and it all worked great. I will go back to Home Depot for future rentals and highly recommend them. I will not go back to Mathis Rentals. The rental for the entire week was $633.26 and I was charged for the days I struggled with the equipment (and got nothing done) and given a store credit of $422.18. I will not collect this store credit because there is nothing at Mathis I would want to rent ... I'm sure they have some good equipment there - but please beware the way it works when you rent there and as far as chippers go, they are pretty beat up. I highly recommend Home Depot rentals! read more

We rented an auger this morning to dig holes for a fence that was burned during the recent wildfires....got 10 holes dug before the equipment broke.....but when we returned the auger they did not have another to replace it. Instead of issuing a refund/partial refund so we could go elsewhere for a working auger and complete our fence project, they insisted on issuing store credit......for equipment they didn't even have!!! These people are THIEVES.....please don't ever walk in this store.....and tell everyone you know not to waste their time here either! these folks are bad news! read more

They always have the machine i need or if they don't have it they get it within one day from there other locations. There are very kind and very helpful. The Mathis folks were courteous and professional. I rented a tiller on Saturday. Apparently when operating it, the bounce loosened the cap on the air filter. I didn't notice it when I cleaned the machine up, but it must have flown off in transport to return (we found it crushed on the side of the highway). They found the replacement part at around $30. They only charged me for the part, no labor or shipping. They could have charged me for rental losses and labor, but didn't. I'll definitely go back. read more

I have the privilege of knowing the owners of Mathis Rentals and you won't meet more honest, good hearted people in this business. I recently took on a huge painting job in the house and the Mathis' loaned us high quality scaffolding for two weeks to get the job done. The equipment was not your flimsy scaffolding that you are afraid to even get on top of; this was sturdy and of the highest quality. Probably the worst company I have ever dealt with. If I could give it a negative score I would. They charge a 12% damage waiver on all equipment which is supposed to cover damage to machines, when in reality it covers NO DAMAGE whatsoever. So they take 12% on top of the rental and pocket it. Equipment is all garbage and they will charge you for damage you didn't even do. I suggest going to United Rentals where the equipment is well kept and the manager isn't completely incompetent. read more

These people are thieves! We have always rented from Derrick rental, they were bought out & now require a deposit.. So we went with Mathis. We rented a JD 27D, told the driver no one would be home when he picked it up, told him where we would hide the key. Monday when I got home from work, saw machine still here, called to see why.. Said the driver told us to call for a scheduled pick up, he DID NOT! They charged me for an extra days rental. I called wanted to talk to owner, he said he didn't want to speak with me (bad business practice) I argued with the manager, she insisted the driver told us to call, but had said he has been in trouble before for not telling customers. Yet, still insisted he did tell us.. This man never mentioned this at all or duh, we would have called to avoid being charged.. The manager also showed bad business practice by hanging the phone up on me... We rent a lot, I'll never rent from here again!! read more
