I use salsa a lot and thought Mateo's was pretty good. I've seen some reviews criticizing the heavy taste of cumin in it, but not only did I not notice that, but I didn't even see cumin in their ingredients list for the big jar of Medium salsa I have. Although I think the label should indicate that there's a high cumin content and taste, I'm glad it didn't. Since I normally do not care for a lot of cumin in my food, I probably wouldn't have purchased it. I think this salsa is one of the best on the market. I am looking forward to their other varieties, I. E. The hatch chili variety. I have thought about mixing it in different degrees with other sauces to somewhat reduce the cumin flavor but the more of it I eat, the more I seem to like the high cumin flavor. I love salsa - it's my go to snack. I'm not a Salsa snob and had high hopes for this based on the reviews of others. I like a balanced salsa but this is just a haymaker of cilantro right to the face. Cilantro is like garlic and should be added sparingly to any dish. However, this salsa is just overwhelmingly heavy with cilantro. The flavor is ok for a salsa but I bought the "hot one" and it had to be Miss bottled. My wife who thinks Taco Bell fire sauce is hot said she could eat it because it was like her mild sauce. Very disappointed I put some on a burrito was cautious in using probably used a quarter of a cup. Didn't get no spice. I then tried to put another quarter of a cup over the top kinda like a wet burrito still very mild I had to chop up some fresh habaneros and put it over the top of it. They are ambiguous in their full disclosure of the ingredients. They call out "spices", but are dishonest about the cumin in their recipe. Hence, the strong taste of cumin overshadows the cilantro. I would not recommend a product when its producers are not forthright and hide the list of all the ingredients. I specifically dislike a strong taste of cumin, and this salsa definitely is overpowering with the flavor of cumin. If I had known they are using cumin I would not have bought this product. Will never buy a Mateo's salsa again! Very disappointed. I noticed others have also commented on the taste of cumin on Amazon, so I'm sure the sales of C.F. Saucer Company will falter very quickly. I eat many variations of ethnic foods and I really enjoy spicy types the most. My wife and I eat Latino and Caribbean foods often. We also love salsa and I have tried many brands. We do not buy nationally known brands as we buy either locally made or from small independent companies. We also look for organic brands as well, as those are our first go-to for choices. I really like the taste of the habanero and jalapeno peppers and the garlic. The ingredients list does not specify what the other spices are. What turned me and my wife off was the off-putting sour taste that overpowered the other flavors and I couldn't distinguish the cilantro that is listed as an ingredient, it was so strong. Using red wine vinegar, concentrated lemon juice (which is not a good thing) on top of salt was just too much. Don't get me wrong, I love vinegar as we cook with various kinds, and we make our own salad dressings from vinegar. We use organic apple cider, balsamic and red wine vinegar(s) often. Salsa is already a bit acidic with tomatoes and salt, but the concentrated lemon juice and red wine vinegar made the taste unpleasant. Keep in mind, this is just us, for others it may be a very enjoyable experience. read more

Mateo's is more of a whole-sale sort of salsa operation, and the offerings that they crank out undoubtedly boast some hefty flavor, but I just think the quality could use some fine-tuning. They distribute widely, and you can even purchase online. Check out the website for some deetz. CostCo appears to be where most salsa junkies come across Mateo's Gourmet Salsas. With 4 different styles along the heat spectrum, you can pretty much personalize what you want in terms of hotness, as they really go up in consistent increments. Aside from that, I would say that $3.50 is quite affordable. Onto the actual flavor. Oh, a quick aside: too runny. OK, taste profile. The verde was certainly chock full of tart, green flavor--you Mexican cuisine geeks, you know EXACTLY what tanginess I refer to when I say "green flavor." The habanero was just too... bland. Yes, the ingredients lists are very no frills, but if all I am tasting is a watered down habanero flavor (don't get me wrong; it was certainly spicy), I cannot justify slapping such mediocrity onto corn chips. Furthermore, you better do a number on the spicing (not hot spicy, but in the realm of actual spice spice) to impress me. Oh, the mild and medium just have far too much tomato flavor; they could nearly pass as pasta sauce done Mexican. All in all, I could have done without having purchased Mateo's on a whim at Costco. Alas, I am human and fall into the trap of: First instinct: "Oh, free samples; of course, I want to try some!" Gut instinct: "Oh... This is very high-quality salsa. I've been a salsa lover since I was a child, younger than 10 years old. I grew up in Minnesota. Here, there's a salsa called Salsa Lisa. This was my first introduction to salsas other than Pace Picante, and other convenient store garbage. Salsa Lisa started out as such a great salsa. My dad was the HVAC repairman for Lisa (the founder/owner). As such, I would go with him on weekends to repair her refrigerators and other kitchen equipment. I would get to try Salsa Lisa when it was the freshest it could possibly be. Salsa Lisa has since grown to be available at every local grocery store in Minnesota. In fact, I have seen it now at Costco in MN as well. I am sad to say that the salsa has taken a hit in terms of quality. Sure, it's still better than Pace Picante and the like. However, it is no longer my go-to salsa. In the past, let's say 5+ years ago, whenever I had to bring salsa to a party, or had guests to my house, I would have Salsa Lisa on the serving tray. Not anymore. It has become more like a dipping sauce than a salsa. Dismayed, I had to find a new salsa. I checked my local grocery store delis. They had various pico de gallos, all of various qualities. I even made my own pico de gallo a few times. Some were good, some were so-so. I was still looking for that go-to salsa. I want to have a stock of salsa that I can always bring to festivities or give to guests when they come to my house. I was lost...until my wife and I got a Costco membership about 4 months ago. We were walking the isles when we saw a food sampler of chips and salsa. We were going to walk past it, until we saw the old man who was working the station sneak a bite. He knew that we saw him, so he said, "That just smelled so good I had to try it." My wife and I both tried it and were instantly in love. We bought 2 bottles (32oz) on the spot, and go through them in 2 weeks or less. The salsa tastes fresh, even though it's been shipped around the country. Costco only sells the Medium variety where we shop, so that's all we've had. We can eat the medium salsa nonstop without having to break for a drink. It's just the right amount of spice. We appreciate hot salsa, but they are to be eaten in more modest portions. We can sit down with good sized bowls of Mateo's Medium and it's ideal. I suspect that most people reading this review have already tried the salsa. I hope that at least 1 person who reads these reviews goes out and tries the salsa. read more
