The kids classes, both wrestling and striking, keep the kids active and engaged the entire hour. My kids are in the K-3 classes and the activities are structured appropriately toward age and ability level. K-3 classes are a mix of both boys and girls, not sure about other levels. The instructors for the kids classes are patient and fun and the teacher to student ratio is always very good. Two of the coaches are teachers by trade. The adult classes are expertly taught and challenging both physically and mentally. Times of classes vary. 6am Jiu Jitsu and Striking in the evening twice a week. The ages of the adult members range from high school aged to guys in their 40's. The best thing about this gym is the character of the place. My kids and I very quickly felt like family because of the personalities of Coaches Mike, Ed, and Rob and the other members are quick to welcome in new people. It is a true team atmosphere and perfect for anyone looking to challenge themselves and become a member of a positive community.

I even took a buddy of mine to a class, who attends a different gym, to check out how amazing the environment and instruction is with this location. He couldn't stop talking about how technical the instruction was and how great the team members were. This school is part of a network with some of the best gyms in the State of New Jersey. Professor McHugh, Coach Tony, Coach Pete, and Coach John are all extremely well versed in BJJ and have a true gift for teaching the technical side of BJJ. Positions and submissions are broken down to the basic elements with steps to ensure understanding prior to moving on to more complex technique. This gym offers a beginner class with Fundamentals and then continues with intermediate and advanced Gi classes. No-gi is available as well, but Gi is the majority of instruction. I have trained at Tri-State a few times when I was up in the area visting some friends. I like to get my training in and have to travel around a lot. They are about an hour away from me and affiliated with the gym I usually go to so they let me come in to train. I called ahead to ask. They didn't charge me and welcomed me with open arms as if I was one of their own. The instructors were knowledgeable, helpful and made sure I was getting everything good. He gave everyone individual attention and explained why we did some techniques this way or that way to help it make sense. This is helpful especially if you are having a hard time executing the technique (like me) in understanding what I was suppose to be doing. I highly recommend Tri-State. I only tried the grappling, but the other classes looked like they were being taught in the same way and all the students were getting a great workout (the kickboxing). I know I got a great workout training there. Its located in a shopping center so parking is easy too and you can go grocery shopping or shopping right after class too!

It is a great place to learn basic self defense, staying healthy, and MMA. The teachers are all wonderful. It is a wonderful school regardless of age and fitness and skill level. He didn't try to lure me in, or sell me on anything. Upon my first visit, I was greeted by Emily, one of the owners, who led me into the class. I was then greeted by the other owner Art, who welcomed me as the class was doing warm ups. At the time, I had no clue they were owners, just based upon how integrated into the school they were/are. All of the schools I've been to I never met the owner. I think it's very cool. A lot of gyms feel like corporations. Not this one. It's a perfect balance between professionalism and fun. Emily and Art genuinely care about you and don't put up with any crap. If you get hurt, they will make it their mission to find out who, what, when, where, and, why. That brings me to my next reason why I love PBJJ. The culture at this gym is vastly different than the other gyms I've been to. Not only are the owners welcoming, but everyone that trains there is welcoming. Every single instructor will introduce themselves to you if they have never met you before. Instead of making you feel like a noob on your first, second, third day, they make you feel comfortable and a part of the family. Most importantly, the quality of the instructors and classes are top notch. Most of the instructors are black belts, which is highly unusual. They are all so knowledgeable, and each one brings their own style which helps you develop your game better. Additionally, from white to black belt, there is a very diverse mix of students that train there. This gives you the opportunity to roll with people of various experience and sizes. It also gives you the chance to have multiple rolling partners so you're not constantly rolling with the same few people. Overall, BJJ is a sport you have to love, obviously, but where you train makes all of the difference. If you're new to BJJ, or you're looking for a gym, I highly recommend just coming and trying out a class. You will soon understand why I've grown so fond for that place.
